As an lgbt atheist (came out as lgbt to my family, but not as an atheist), I think why the latter can be so much more of a big deal for people is that, for really devout Christians, religion really is *everything.* It’s not the end of the world if you come out as gay or trans or whatever; those are just “sins to be overcome,” so long as you repent. But when it’s a matter of not believing in that God, then it’s not like they can just “walk with you through this battle with sin.” It’s just, over. At least, that’s kinda been my experience. So you are more than free to disagree with the callers positions and even think they're stupid as well as dangerous, I guarantee you he thinks your positions are equally stupid and dangerous... Hell you can even bite back a sneer at the clearly stereotype uneducated accent etc. But you should keep in mind that the accent thing is just a stereotype and plenty of people with accents thicker than that are guaranteed your or my intellectual superiors. You also don't get to pretend that his views are just "random fox and Shapiro talking points" just because you don't like or agree with them... Frankly that sneering dismissiveness is more indicative of an insecurity because you know you can't actually effectively counter some of his views or points not a Hallmark of ANY sort of superiority morally or any other way to him or his views. People like you are quick to tell other people they should do and be better while having an utter lack of self reflection much less self awareness.

It's very likely because of power. The right wing party of US, the Republican party (well, more _actively_ right wing), will push for favoritism of Christianity socially and sometimes even legally, even though that's antithetical to what's literally in the country's Constitution, so churches will go that way so that they can reap the benefits Meanwhile, Republicans tend to also justify themselves as "the good guys" because they like to say that they're very devout Christians, as being Christian has become a very mainstream idea of what an American is supposed to be. At this point they are deeply linked, and it really doesn't matter to them that the Messiah himself would not just be disapproved, but outright essentially considered heretical.

He prob got told x is true and anything else is wrong throughout his life. He failed to get why atheism IS A RISK to many ppl; to hear him ignore Ben’s story is sad, and he kept trying assume ppl had motives. He also sounds lot like the ppl who back in the Civil rights era said “hey it’s cool you’re black, but you don’t have to PROTEST.” It’s a form of American liberalism where differences are ignored In favor or conformity to a singular ideal. And he he is completely wrong on “there is no x community.” I mean he’s no x community is the same, but there are communities both small and large that have their own in group dynamics, slang, similar tastes etc. like literally black Americans HAD A GREEN BOOK to avoid violence-something g whites didn’t have. Selena the singer in Texas WAS BELOVED by Hispanics-yet when she died-most white Americans DIDNT know about her or at least didn’t express the level of sadness. We can apply this to recreational groups like anime Fan clubs, sports clubs, groups whoose members share common traits to some extent, where they have their private Jokes etc.
@byron2521 Жыл бұрын
I'm an atheist, and I think this is a little truth to this. However, this probably has more to do with human psychology than deception. If by "religion" you are talking about a group of people with shared beliefs that bond as like they are in a special club (community). Everyone needs a community to belong to. Now of course atheist groups alienate themselves (to a much lesser extent) like religious groups into "us vs them" mentality sometimes. But again, that's psychology (just human nature). I was raised a Chistian, was one until I was 19. I even see some similarities in the progression of the belief systems. Again, that's psychology. Christians talk about being "gung-ho", or really turned on the "Lord" when they are converted. I was exactly the same way @ 20 when I became an atheist, I let everyone know it and why (kind of a militant atheist, overzealous, older and wiser now). Again, psychology. However, the big difference I have seen over my 30 years of being an atheist is, I never knew an atheist that used bigotry, hate, and violence to promote their beliefs. As far as "converts go", you will not win over any religious person to atheism unless they are already questioning their faith. So being militant is pointless. But that is why I like these atheist channels and support them. That is because no matter what any religious person claims, they call into this show because of doubt. They may raise "hell" against atheism, but they are looking to reconfirm their beliefs. If their religious faith was strong, they wouldn't bother calling in. It may help them on a path out of religion. Of course, it's fun to hear them rant too! On the "coming out issue": I'm straight and cannot pretend to know what it's like to come out as gay, bi, or trans, but I also have family that are fundamentalist. My cousin's a preacher! One of my cousins came out as a lesbian and my family's response was "she just hasn't found the right guy yet" (wrong, but a better response to me being an atheist). But when I came out as an atheist I was shunned! I'm sure like Katy points out this is a much bigger deal in America than it is in the U.K., but it also depends on where you live in America. I live in a large city once and was open about being an atheist, I got no negative response from anyone. However, I'm from what is known in America as the "Bible Belt" (south), coming out there I lost friends, shunned by family, and was even worried about losing my job. Hope this doesn't offend anyone, but ever since I have felt an empathy and sympathy for any LGBTQ that are discriminated against because of their lifestyle.

Given the biblical name they carry it just seems unlikely that they haven't seen it. Sounds like they've been listening to the Tim Pool types. I came up in NYC where, sure, a lotta people are religious and some are VERY religious, but it just wasn't a huge issue for a lotta us. We also had the benefit of being in a place that's so diverse and somewhat socially progressive (at least in comparison to some other places) that we largely saw religion on its best behavior and just tryna stay relevant with soup kitchens, homeless shelters, charities, etc, and a smile. I'd seen it in small doses on visits staying with family in the South but it wasn't till I moved down here that I realized the stranglehold religion has on people. Rather they're Protestant, Catholic, Muslim, Jewish, even the Hare Krishnas here, pretty much all faiths in the area are hyper-conservative/ reactionary authoritarians. It's bad. Sorry, this is affecting me similarly to Ben, so I feel compelled to comment before the video is over. So I apologize if these points I'm about to make are made later. I live in the South, in the Bible Belt, and as Katy said, most people just assume everyone here is Christian. And I agree with Katy's other point that atheism is seen as more of a choice than being gay or trans (though most Christians I've met think those are choices as well), but I suspect Malachi is going one step further than that. When he says he doesn't understand why atheists have to come out, even after hearing Ben's story, I suspect he's saying he thinks Ben should have hidden his atheism from his family and continued going to church even though he doesn't believe it. A lot of Christians I know think the same about gay and trans people, that they should continue to live in the closet, in secret, and never show affection for their partners in public and that trans people shouldn't be allowed access to hormone therapy or gender surgery (sorry if I'm using the wrong terms here). But here's the thing; the church has very negative teachings about being gay. Being a gay or trans atheist, and being forced to listen to that hateful rhetoric every week can be very depressing and it could lead to feelings of isolation. I could see that it might actually lead to people getting so depressed they want to end their own lives. Being forced to live a lie is a dark, depressing life. Malachi should think how he'd feel if he was forced to hang out with people who talk like they hate him.

I do have a secular argument against same sex marriage and its at least as rational and legitimate as any religious argument against it, please note im NOT saying it's any good because it's not its silly just that religious arguments are also trash and it doesn't invoke God. Same sex marriage may lead to kids and they means one of two things. 2 dads= double dad jokes which violates a Geneva convention or something 2 moms equal: recursive loop of I don't know ask your mother Since that's as goof as arguments get.... let's keep same sex marriage legal

I think both Ben and Katy are being a bit disingenuous when they claim campaigns for trans, gay, bi, and atheist rights do not impact heterosexual men and women, religious people or other special interest groups. These things are fine until they become "woke", then they can become damaging. Many academics and others in my country (Britain) have had their careers and lives damaged because they challenged trans orthodoxy in their support of women's rights. I am a male heterosexual atheist, so I don't really have much skin in the game; but I care about fairness, and insisting that anyone who does not agree with you has a malicious agenda is simply not fair.

I’m intersex and an atheist and I completely agree with this caller. lgbtq people love bragging about being victimized or act like their victimized when the majority of people don’t give a shit and aren’t thinking about them at all. They/we have all the rights in the world we just want more attention.

@@Gambit0590 I’m not lying nor am I stupid. Have you not noticed more than half the country and an even larger part of the world agree with what I said. That’s why there’s a nonstop conversation about it for the last 7 years. I was born intersex and I don’t agree with any of the trans rhetoric going around. It’s a slap in the face to someone who didn’t get to jump around day to day deciding what gender they feel like. It’s BS and the majority of people doing it are teens and early 20’s kids looking for a way to stand out and get attention.

I actually feel this caller isn’t totally insane. With the amount of wokeness that people deal with, you’re going to get sick or it, and lash out at anything that sounds like it. As an atheist and someone who is lgbt, I don’t agree with calling it “the lgbt community”. Pretty much every lgbt person disagrees or hates others in the category. A lot of the hostility I see lgbt people getting is brought on by themselves. The amount of hostility, aggression, and moral grandstanding by the “lgbt community” is astounding. It’s no wonder not many people want to be our allies. People are so fed up with identity politics, and wokeness, and intersectionality, that we’re gonna put our foot down eventually. It’s gotten so bad that I know gay people who will not even talk to someone who looks like Ben, because they can pretty much tell exactly what type of person they are just by looking at them. By the way, letting children transition isn’t right. It’s one thing to let a kid dress in the other sexes clothes. But to medically transition them? I can’t believe anyone supports that. What the hell has happened to ACA?

@@UlexiteTVStoneLexite i think they meant with shit getting out of hand. when someones pronouns are being rock/rockself or dog/dogself, its getting absolutely rediculous. Most people will agree for equality and rights. but at a certain point, some concepts just go too far.
@UlexiteTVStoneLexite Жыл бұрын
@@Gnomig01 nice strawman there because no one's doing that. So you're arguing against something that isn't even happening and somehow you think this is a good argument. People that don't want to respect other people's pronouns complain about using they/them. Making up an alternative set of pronoun is completely reasonable because we make up words all the time. It's just incompetent jerks that want to complain about making up new words and terms. We didn't know what atoms were so we had to make up a word we didn't know what courts were so we had to make up a word. we made up words for everything because all words are made up. What difference does it make if someone wants to create a new set of pronouns to better fit their gender identity? You just want something to complain about

@@jeffreylehman1159 yeah, same vibes. It's a bit over-the-top. To be fair, there are some real self-haters and pick-me's out there, but a lot of these online posters are covert fascists, obsessed gender critters, and right wingers who are trying to throw a wedge between the LGBTQ community, in particular, the goal seems to be to isolate trans people for political reasons. Too bad for them this cis lesbian finds their attempts pathetic and tedious. There's no LGBT without the T. Those who know, know.
