So if a man's wife gets kidnapped the husband has to attempt to buy the old one back before he can marry again but if the husband gets kidnapped the wife can get remarried to a new husband right away? Sounds fair to me hehe.

To be fair, in the olden days women had very few rights and limited job opportunities unlike in modern day where women have many options ; in many places women couldn’t even own property. Women back then had very few options outside of marriage, the few women who could live comfortably outside of it were mostly from wealthy families or the few who had a prosperous business (in places where they were allowed to openly own and run places)

in contrast flemish law was extremely strict on these things, kidnap and rape were capital punishments, a rapist was to be put to death with the precursor of the precursor of the guilotine, basicly, your neck is placed on a plank, between two holders, another plank is placed on top between the holders, and then they smash a hammer on top of the plank until your neck was broken or even severed they kept refining it until they came to what was basicly a guilotine, then some French chap stole the idea, took credit for it, but ended up dying by it

Husband: One penny. Wife: WHAT DO YOU MEAN ONE PENNY??? Husband: You’re right, *cuts penny in half* half a penny. Kidnapper: You’ve just travelled hundreds of miles to buy her back and your offering half a penny? Husband: Saxon law mate, I can’t get a new wife until I’ve at least tried to buy the old one back, so I’m offering you half a penny.
