Excellent video! Just what I was looking for. Thinking of buying one of those Rockwood OTG basic popups so I can just get out occasionally on the weekends with my wife and pups. I had a full sized RV and hated it. Way too much work for a weekend. With the basic popup, I can be all set up in minutes. But, I will always be at a campground with 30amp service so I'd like to take advantage of that for a portable AC unit. This video shows me how to add the components to tap into the 30 amp service.

Greg, would you be able to post the parts you purchased in the description? This video is awesome. Have a 1978 Viking pop up I’d like to do this to for some extra power for a heater

Nicely done-the installation and the videography. Very clear.

Good video. I learned a lot from watching. Very easy to follow. Can I install 4 or 5 15-amp breakers on a 30 amp shore power, or do I need to bump up 50-amp? I want to put each appliance on its own breaker, running a portable 1400 BTU AC, a microwave, a toaster oven, an electric 3 hot-plates or burners stove, 2 portable electric heaters. Some of them can share a breaker.

You can install as many breakers and circuits that you want. However, the total usage off all the breakers combined cannot exceed 30 amps. Actually, with safety factors built in, you probably won't get a full 30 amps total before tripping the breaker. So, example, you probably cannot run AC, microwave, and toaster at the same time even if they are on separate breakers. Good luck.

Thank you so much for this! Just one question though we’re those 15 amp breakers?

I have a question as well. I’m using a 4 panel breaker box. Installing 4 outlets but want them all on their own breaker. Do I need to create a bridge to all 4 breakers just as you did to the one ?

Great vids. I’ve watched about 15 of your vids tonight. This may be a silly question but why did u put two outlets right next to the service box? Why not run wire from the service box directly to where you want outlets within the camper? Thanks.
@FakeLegGreg3 жыл бұрын
The two outlets beside the service box are strictly shore power. The plug ins there from this other outlets can be unplugged and switched over to the inverter when needed.

How many wall outlets can you put on the same 15 amp breaker?

Thanks for watching. I have thought about adding solar. Not sure yet.

I’m not an expert in electrical systems by any means but I know a little, but you can just plug this into a 30 amp campground connection without reducing the power? Like a fridge and heater won’t be damaged by this amount of power?
@FakeLegGreg4 жыл бұрын
30 amps just means there are a total of 30 amps of electricity available. It also means all of your electric stuff cannot consume more than a total of 30 amps if turned on all at the same time. The fridge may only use 3 amps of the 30 amps available anf that is ok. Thanks for watching.
@FakeLegGreg4 жыл бұрын
Also, this is 110 volts not 220 volts. If you happen to plug this into 30 amps 220 volts really bad things will happen.
@bentaylor46814 жыл бұрын
So I guess what’s the point of having the 30 amp plug when you could have used a 110 shore plug? Just for the capability of having up to 30 amps?
@FakeLegGreg4 жыл бұрын
@@bentaylor4681 You seem to be confusing volts and amps and it could end badly. There is 30 amp 220 volts for your house electric dryer and maybe electric oven. There is also 15 amp 110 volts for your house lights and other small electrical stuff, TV's, Radio's, computers, etc. ------At the RV park there is 30 amp 110 volt plugs for your trailer. There may also be 15 amp 110 volt and 50 amp 110 volt. Which one of those you need to use will depend on how many amps your trailer needs Generally, if you have no AC or electric heat or microwave you could use 15 amp plug. If you have one AC you probably need 30 amps. If you have a big travel trailer with 2 AC units you will need 50 amps. My pop up has a fridge, lights, computer, electric heater, and a portable AC. We will be using a 110 volt 30 amp plug to provide the power we need for all that. I hope this helps.
@bentaylor46814 жыл бұрын
Okay so with this system you wouldn’t need and adaptor at the rv park you could just plug right into there outlet there if they offer a 30 amp 110v connection? And so does that mean that pretty much all campground connections run off of 110v not 220v?

adding a ground wire to the frame is a bad idea (by the way that's not technically a ground wire as there is no path to ground on the frame in most cases, you have just bonded the box to the frame ) ,note that pop-ups ect; are on rubber wheels and unless you ground the pop-up or trailer to a correct ground ( driven ground rod ,metal water pipe ran under ground ect.) then you don 't have a ground . if by chance ; say one of your hot wires shorts against or touches the side of you box and someone leans against or touches your trailer they become a path to ground . this kind of stuff gets people electrocuted and yes I'm a licensed electrician with 40 years experience ,be safe .
