It feels crazy how something as immense as League/Dota all stemmed from one guy making a mod. It's like a wildfire starting from the smallest spark. I'm so glad you're back from the hiatus. It's easy to say your docs have become some of the best content on KZbin.

Its Interesting that pretty much all of the biggest multiplayer games that are around today were originally community made mods for other games. Mobas (League and DotA) came out of mods for starcraft and warcraft. Tactical shooters (CSGO and Valorant) were came out of a mod for team fortress, Battle Royals (PUBG, Fortnite, Apex Legends) came out of a mod for ARMA. Its a shame that so few games have mod support these days.

Can't believe how it's been a few decades now since the first video game and so many games and changes that happenned over the years. I almost can't believe it that it all happened on my lifetime if I didn't live it. All those old games and the atmosphere back then feels like a different lifetime. The commentary is superb as always and watching how you document these things feels like history is being chronicled everytime. Thanks for the amazing content as always!

I do love how league is the perfect counterexample to corporate game design philosophy. It's incredibly dense with mechanics and depth to the point that you could play 200 matches that average over 30 minutes, and still basically have no fucking clue what you are doing and be worse than bronze. That's more than 100 hours and you still suck so bad that pretty much everything you are doing is wrong. It's also hyper competitive and people can really go very hardcore into playing it and trying to improve at it. All that, and it was for a time the most played game out there and is still one of the most successful video games of all time. It's proof that you don't need to sand off all the edges of every game to be successful.

league is inherently very addicting as a model even if you dont know what you're doing,the sheer amount of variables and constant new stimuli will make you enjoy playing it even if you are trash at it,but some people get weeded out because they quite literally have no idea what theyre doing ,but that's just their lack of reading

This video was awesome! Some other things that made league so amazing back then were the special gamemodes like:ascension, doom bots, legend of the poro king, black market brawlers, hexakill, etc. Login screens were always so hyped to see and hear, we had more community videos showcased by riot like: stickfigure spotlight, summoner showdowns, how to be annoying in league of legends series, etc. Its so crazy where league has come and gone to! One other map thats not in this video was a special, magma 1v1 map!

FWhile DotA lans were happening, it was hard to find a single DotA game inside TFT, combing through countless NvB, Angel Arena, GTD and Footman Frenzy lobbies. Granted in a long run they were more fun to play. Most fun part about DotA was the -wtf -a game mode, basically URF with random champions in League. It was a game of honor because whoever got Zeus, was flamed until he rerolled a new champ. It was fun watching 9 people cry while you have a global Karthus ult with 1-second cooldown.

The addition of challenges this season renewed my interest in the grind, and it has me coming back time and time again. I love URF but the lack of URF-specific challenges is what keeps me from playing the gamemode continually. Gamification works, and a lack of achievements or leaderboards for the other gamemodes that aren't SR or ARAM only contributes towards their failure to remain interesting over time.

I learned alot today about the history of DotA. Thank you. I played DotA every single day in my high school for years until 2nd year college when it died because of DotA2. I was ecstatic to play DotA2 but when it came out it didn't click on me, probably because I believe even today that Blizzard's character design, animation, voice lines, sfx, game engine and details that are the body of DotA is so freaking legendarily good that I felt so disgusted in the Dota2 animation and design it turned me off. Probably because I know how to draw and animate so I felt really bothered by it while trying DotA 2. Then my classmates have me tried League of Legends that for me was really ugly at the time I didn't get hooked until they updated the graphics of the game 10x better especially the map, one day I saw one in net cafe playing a limited game mode in LoL where it's the same game but with less cooldown (80% cooldown reduction), I was like "Hey that's like -wtf in DotA! Except there still a little cooldown on abilities" there and there, I decided to give it a try because of one game mode. Now my LoL account is Level 400+ with 400+ skins with complete 5 ultimate skins (mind you I never directly bought a skin in my life all are from chests/events/fusing but yeah I still have spent money).

There's also one small bit of information that helped League become incredibly popular and that's them coining the term "MOBA" Before League, during the DotA days, people didn't really know what to call the exact experience you get from playing it. The closest people can get to explaining it is a "single unit ARPG". That's also why the term "MOBA" or "Multiplayer online battle arena" doesn't quite literally fit the League or DotA experience, because it was mostly a marketing move. But it helped! With it's own genre name it helped a ton in spreading the word
@E_Clip
@E_Clip 2 жыл бұрын
Well there was no need for such a term, Dota was the name of the game and the genre at the same time. Obviously that changed as more similar games started popping up because it necessitated the need for a name of the new genre. When the term Moba started getting popular around the time LoL came out, Valve tried to insert their own genre term but it didnt catch on: ARTS or Action Real-Time Strategy.

It always feels kind of surreal looking at the history of League of Legends and other things of similar age. It feels like league has existed for so long, but all this was happening while I was in elementary and middle school, and I'm not that old haha. Crazy to think that something so big and influential is younger than me. As always, love the content Gbay!

What also helped the genre to shape as a MOBA we all know today is that hero arena mods are popular back then, be it FFA PvP or Co-Op, as well as mod pop culture character models. Be it from anime, cartoon or comics. So it's to no surprise that the iteration of AoS in WC3 which is DotA is ironically focused heavily on hero battles rather than "defending the ancients."

A huge part I think is the cinematic side, and the E-sport scene. I think league is still relevant because it managed to adapt and stay appealing. Like no joke, KDA, Arcane, and the seasonal trailer animations have gotten SO MANY new players into the game. I personally know three friends who never would have touched league, but one of them, a KPOP fan got into the universe through KDA. Two watched Arcane and wanted more of the universe, so they binged all Riot cinematics. And after that they downloaded the game. The E-sports scene is also super hype and very healthy. Pick 'em is a huge thing that makes people also more interested. Predicting the outcome of the games and competing with your friends over the best luck and predictions. The trailers and songs they make for the worlds? So hype it makes non-league players get chills. Like any time I have quit League, I get a youtube recommendation for the worlds or seasonal trailer... and I'm back to patching LoL. And I think the draw of league is really in the name: legends. What draws people to football? Messi, Ronaldo, Zlatan, etc. It's legends. Little boys wishing to be like those legendary players. And league has that. When we played as kids, if someone made a huge outplay, everyone yelled shit like "FAKER WHAT WAS THAT". If someone went to do a desperate backdoor play, everyone called him xPeke. A sick Lee Sin play? That was Insec. What makes League so hype, is the possibility of huge game changing outplays. The adrenaline and recognition. You can play 10 games of absolute misery, just for the huge rush of carrying a game and outplaying three people alone. Especially when you play with friends and everyone who is dead is watching in suspense and starting to cheer louder after every juke, skillshot, and kill. League also made a huge learning curve and new player improvements. They did this by improving their casual game MMR and smurf detection. I'm saying this because I have friends with at least 5 smurf accounts that all end up playing against other clear smurfs and plat+ mmr enemies. Meanwhile a friend's girlfriend made a new account and got the cutest noobs in her games. Right until we decided to join her and brought our MMR enemies into the game. Also all the comeback mechanics? Objective bounties, shut down bounties, decreased gold gain from stomping, catch up experience. All of that makes the game less snowball.
