It’s not just school. As a Welsh person, you can’t even submit a tender for work for Anglesey council unless you can speak Welsh (not everyone in Wales can speak Welsh beyond what is taught in school as a second language, so levels are similar to French or German). Lots of public sector jobs now have “essential” Welsh, even in areas where the only Welsh you would hear is in schools. What they’re doing now to Welsh people whose first language is English, is no different than the Welsh Not.

So yet another example of liebour's racism towards the English. How many Welsh people speak Welsh. I understand wanting to preserve their language and heritage, but will they do the same to anyone else who doesn't speak welsh or is it just English speakers who are being discriminated againest? According to the APS, there were an estimated 891,800 Welsh speakers living in Wales in the year ending 30 September 2023.which is 29.2% of the population aged three and older. This is a 0.6 percentage point decrease from the previous year.

It’s not racism . It may be a bad and unnecessary discrimination but it is definitely not racism unless you think the welsh and speakers of any other languages are different races ? Ima Welshman ,I speak no welsh and I am not a different race . I speak no welsh because Unfortunately welsh was almost an extinct language when I was in school during the seventies and never taught .It was nearly extinct because speaking welsh for my parents generation was discouraged by teachers annd the language of our homeland , our history etc was never taught and my grandparents generation would be punished with a cane and the infamous “ Welsh Knot “ , a heavy wooden board on rope hung around a child’s neck all day in school for speaking it when they had to speak English . The decimation of the welsh heritage , history and language by English hegemony failed fortunately That and this is a foolish policy that unfairly discriminates in a way that undermines a child’s education and is stupid and seemingly vindictive for no reason that benefits anyone . I’m sure there is more to it ,at least I hope so because this is very bad ,sadly the welsh Senedd and plaid Cymru and Labour Wales, are full of ideologues and fanatics making bad decisions recently .

The headline for this piece is a bit disingenuous. It has long been the policy of a highly motived but very small minority in Wales to promote "English Not" (look up "Welsh Not" for background reading). Politicians in Wales have to negotiate a line with what the vast majority of folk are content with but also keep this vociferous passionate and very influential group happy otherwise they was seen as "Pro English Colonialism". The overall move, tacit or not, is to force all schools to be Welsh Medium anyway over the next decade or so, even private nurseries for children up to 4 being forced to tow this line or go bust. The irony is that fluent Welsh speakers are quite rare and competent reader/writers very much more so. This leads to a skill shortage and those unfit for post being given jobs beyond their ability - being fluent in Welsh does not make one an inspirational teacher or a shrewd accountant.....

So it may be that the Welsh Labour policy is intended to deter rich English people from pricing the Welsh out of their own rural houses by discriminating against their English only speaking children. Both of them have killed people while driving a train by people being on the tracks and as the driver its your job to attend the injured victim. @Inquisitor_Vex Pretty awful 'promotion'. I'd be screaming from the rafters if a Welsh speaking child was denied equality with English speaking children here in England...I would be disgusted. Promotion would be ensuring all schools teach Welsh language and culture and history of Wales embedded in school curriculums, funding clubs and events that teach Welsh culture and language. I'm absolutely all for that, in spades. What I do not agree with is discrimination and punishment, especially of kids and even worse, associated with their education.

Nobody owes you anything. If the Welsh government wants to give free school transport or whatever it was to Welsh speakers then I don’t see what it has to do with anyone else?

Happy for Wales to support the indigenous Welsh, England should follow suit and support the indigenous English. I won’t hold my breath.

The welsh are the true natives. We were here long before the Romans, saxons and Normans. How can we fight off foreign invaders when we don’t embrace our own shared heritage? They want us to fight amongst ourselves. Ry'n ni yma o hyd

I’m 💯 behind preserving the Welsh language but disagree with discrimination based on hate. Labour once again showing they are a truly nasty party

It appears that the rule has been designed to specifically discriminate against British / Welsh children, as we know, they would never enforce the rule against families who have a 3rd world background.

There is a simple reason for this as someone who lives in Wales. There are fewer Welsh-speaking schools in South Wales so children have to travel further to find them. It's not a question of discrimination; it's a question of location. It's a non story and a simple bit of investigation would show that. it's just lazy sensationalist journalism, which I'm afraid is so common these days.
