Chancellor Rachel Reeves confirmed that State Pension payments will rise by the earnings growth measure of the Triple Lock policy during the Autumn Budget on Wednesday. This means millions of older people claiming the New and Basic State Pension will see payments rise by 4.1 per cent from next April. Similarly, people on disability benefits such as Personal Independence Payment (PIP), Disability Living Allowance (DLA) and Attendance Allowance will see payments rise by the September Consumer Price Index (CPI) inflation rate of 1.7 per cent. The Chancellor also announced that 7 million people on Universal Credit will see payments go up by 1.7 per cent next year.

It's not just the winter fuel payments. A guy I spoke to who works for the ambulance service told me the elderly are way way down on the list when it comes to care within the NHS. They are left sitting in corridors whilst those in their 30's and 40's get priority for a bed. Absolutely disgusting.

I can testify to that 👆 as I was admitted by ambulance to hospital, eventually taken to a ward and the corridor was lined with elderly patients crying out for attention, yet I was given a room to myself. Honestly, I didn't want to be there but had no choice as I needed 2 blood transfusions.

In fact, only the first hour needs to be used after that a 13.5 tog duvet (£6.50 from Asda) will keep her as warm as toast with her own recycled body heat. I speak from experience. This was a ridiculous pantomime in which, for presumably political purposes, he was happy to play his cartoon-like part in a pure charade. I used to love my nation but I just feel trapped alone no one to turn to my health is failing fast and the only member of my family left is my brother who has cancer of the blood and moved to Cyprus. I feel in total despair in what was once a great nation. Wasn't it Rachel Reeves who spoke about meeting an elderly lady when she was out canvassing, and how it upset her when she reached out to shake that lady's hand only to find that it was purple with cold and freezing to touch? And Starmer, three days before the election told pensioners that they had "nothing to fear" from him. He also mentioned having had conversations with ladies in their 80's who had told him about their winter struggles and that they have to stay in bed during the day to keep warm. Starmer and Reeves are beyond contempt. In opposition they used the plight of pensioners as a stick to shake at the Tories. In July, Starmer used the pensioners when he made his "nothing to fear from me" comment. He said that he knew of the struggles pensioners faced with the cost of living and energy crises. He made them believe that a Labour government would care about them, but clearly, he only did that to gain their trust and get their votes. It's not just Reeves and Starmer though. It's every single MP who voted to remove the WFA - and then cheered when they (Labour) 'won' the vote. Some even fist-bumped. Anyone who would use the elderly in this way and then abandon them the moment they could - and cheered having done so - is beyond contempt.

My husband & friend popped into our local Wetherspoon’s & sat in a booth with an elderly man. He was drinking a mug of something & it was almost finished so looked as if he was leaving. However that was not the case. He was sitting in the pub, drinking tea all day, having endless refills, to keep warm for the cost of a cup of tea. After a chat a short while later he dozed off. He had lost his wife & came to the pub every day to keep warm & to chat with anyone willing or he would sit quietly dozing. When my husband left he gave the man a few pounds, the cost of a meal. The man wasn’t a beggar! This must be everyone’s nightmare fear that they will be alone, in a cold home, with little money to do anything else but sit in a pub every day nursing a mug of tea to legitimise being there!

Having lost my wonderful husband on July 27th after a very long illness, let down by the failing NHS, seeing him chucked out of A & E on a freezing January night at 2.00am when he was dying., nothing surprises me anymore. I hear the heating kick in at night now even with the thermostat turned to minimum I know that the bill will be more than I can afford despite the both of us working hard from leaving school and getting qualified for our careers. Every night now, I hunker down under the covers by about 6.30pm to keep warm. I always believed we paid our national insurance contributions and taxes to insure us against poverty in our later years. I feel inclined to withhold paying the council tax I can't afford until this corrupt government is brought to its knees but being an honest woman of integrity, I will eat less, buy cheap food that isn't very nutritious and survive to be a voice for the downtrodden and oppressed.
