I know lots of people from Italy to Finland that did national service, none of them were sent to front lines. They don't do that.

Of course no one doing national service is getting sent to the front lines, but a lot of countries that do national service focus on military training. In the UK we already have the combined cadet force, which is a school age national youth program that teaches children military skills, like how to shoot a gun ect. My mother made me do it, and I hated it!

I have a friend who danced in that Iranian ballet company and lived in the same block of flats at the same time as DMcG, and left Iran in a similar way.
