the ion would not be able to go very far in air. the vacuum allows them to travel further, be affected by the quadrupole and hit the detector. no vacuum, no ion, no detection,

Maybe they're worried or have knowledge that the newer versions of Win will cause problems with the software or newer versions of Win do not support this software. It's been known to happen.
