Thank you for making this. I had a Pixel 8 Pro and 9 Pro XL for about 30 days simultaneously. I now only have the 9 Pro XL. I was running GCam 9.5 on 9PXL and 9.4 on 8P; Android 15 QPR1 Beta 1-2 on both. I took a lot of comparison shots and did notice regressions as well. Notably with 50MP. Taking photos of say a tree line the Pixel 8 Pro was much more detailed, the 9PXL was often more washed out and smudgey. I was hoping 9.6 would improve the regressions I noticed. I will have to go back and take new photos on my 9PXL and compare to my previous photos.

I've noticed that for taking anything up close, you need to use the 12 mp. If you want a very wide shot, for example a scenery, you use the 50 mp. Not sure what's up with the 50 mp and close shots.

Same experience. I replaced my iPhone 15 Pro Max with the 9 Pro XL and I must say that night mode photos on the iPhone had no noise in the sky at all, looking much better overall in comparison to the Pixel. I hope Google is going to address that issue

Thanks for this video, because otherwise I'd be oblivious... I jest tested telephoto camera on P9 Pro on GCam 9.6, and then restored the camera app to 9.4, took the same photo and the result is night and day (on 9.6 it's blurry noisy mess with less details when cropped in). Until Google fixes this I'm disabling auto updates and staying on 9.4 version for now...

I have the same issues with the g cam 9.5 but their is a work around you have to uninstall the g cam 9.5 or 9.6 thats what i did . Now my Pixel 9 Pro XL is on G cam version 9.4 and this issues are gone i taken som pictures and the difference is like day and night .

To be honest I've been disappointed with night shots with a few Pixels now (5, 6P, 7P and now 8P). Google pioneered this stuff yet isn't able to give us a night sky that looks dark without turning it into a blue-ish blocky mess. I don't care about "add me later", and richer colors for underwater are cool and all, but night photos are a much more frequent use case, and right now side by side with iPhones, they look like crap.

Completely agree with this overview. The Google camera version 9.6 has been quite a downgrade on my own P9P. There is a lot more quality inconsistencies you've also pointed out. But even now the zoom has become extremely juttery choppy to the point where it looks like I am using a fisher price phone camera. The only improvement I've seen on this version apart from the new underwater mode (which I personally won't be using myself) The animations into the camera additional options are a lot smoother and look to be running up to 120 HZ. But apart from that It's been a very lacklustre update and more of a downgrade.

I don't have a 9, but on my 8 Pro the issues I keep having are luminance noise artifacts and quite extreme white balance changes when taking multiple shots of (almost) the same outdoor scene (with minimal change in light).

Well, well well. I've been having the same issue with my P9PXL. Was actually in the process of sending my phone back for repair. It's similar with my P8P, but to a lesser extent. I think it's a A15 issue as it only appeared after the update.

Thanks for this. Sometimes my photos look better on v9.6 on my 9 xl. Sometimes worse. I just downgraded to v9.5, and my pictures remind me of my 8 pro in the viewfinder. I also briefly had v9.6 on my 8 pro. I didn't notice a diff, but I quickly reverted to v9.5 because of the v9.6 issues. I'm on android 15 beta on the xl (stable 14 to 15 on the 8 pro), and unfortunately I sent off my 8 pro as a trade in so I can't test it anymore.

A strange behavior is, when I check for updates, Pixel Camera doesn't show up, but when I search manually and tap on Pixel Camera it shows Update option. Do you use dedicated GCAM profile for each of them? As GCAM requires such tweaks per sensor, it might be that default profile is more suitable for older pixels, but with GCAM and not loading profile, you cannot have out of the box good behaviour for every phone.

Strange how Google distributes the camera app. My Pixel 8 Pro on A15 is still on 9.4 and no update visible. Quality is awesome. Also if you look at early sample pictures like for example on dpreview the quality is good. They have 50MP JPG and DNG available for download. Google has messed up something here. Hope they can fix it soon.

Yes they did! I don't know when, but at some point the medium and low light photos of 6 Pro are darkened after post-processing. This happens to Pixel 7 too. At this point my old 3 XL takes more accurate photos than both of them.

I don’t know about the pixel, but raw on iPhone doesn’t work well at night. Since the camera just takes the photo instead of really going out of its way to let more light in and get the image to look better. Raw isn’t always better. For the iphone anyway, i take raw photos except for when in low light. By low light, i don’t mean night shots like the one in this video. I mean anywhere where the lights aren’t bright. Noise comes in pretty quickly otherwise.

I guess developing and maintaining an operating system to cater to tens of thousands of different devices and optimizing your own devices at the same time are too difficult even for a company as big as Google (Alphabet). Apple has it easier by having less devices to work with, not to mention they have the best hardware engineers of all tech companies. Having said that I'm still hesitating if I want to stick with iOS or not. It makes zero sense for me to keep using an iPhone when I have a Windows PC. My pixel 9 camera right out of the box is red tinted. I look sunburned in all my snapchat videos. I tried it on my husband, tried it at a different house, outside. Nothing works. There has been a pixel camera update in the play store yesterday have checked still 9.6 but may have changed a number somewhere. Unsure of what’s changed hoping it’s resolved the issue but unsure hopefully this channel will cover it

I shoot hundreds of product pictures a week for online reselling. (I have professional mirrorless gear but it's generally overkill for my needs) I was using a Samsung S21 Ultra that took great pictures. I decided to "upgrade" to the Pixel 9 Pro XL and it is garbage. I'm actually on my second one after the carrier replaced the first one. The pictures, which I shoot in manual mode under pro lights on pro photo paper, are inconsistent and all over the place. The picture in the cam app--ive tried several --looks nothing like what I get in the folder after Pixel processing. AND, when I tether my full frame mirrorless cameras to the phone, Google processes them as well making them look like shit. Note: taking product pics in the phone speeds up listing and saves time/money. Except, with Google. Google cares more about pushing cutesy AI crap rather than developing a solid camera.

I am facing this problem pixel 7 pro...after Android 15 update the video quality wrose and glitter frame drops and when I click photo after processing the photo have low details..😢 but battery backup improve

I dont have this issue on my Pixel 9 Pro XL the version of camera 9.5 so it seems like they different version depending on region .

I guess i have to hold off buying a pixel phone. The only thing going for with the pixel lineip is the camera. If they cant get that right then i stick with Samsung

How to discover the right gcam for specific phones? It's so tiring,maybe because of being naive maybe! Whenever I download some gcam ome or the other thing doesn't work.

I was researching about it but al least on pixel 8pro, the transition between lenses on video feels so smooth now so that's one😂
