As a kid back in the 80s I remember my father waking us up at 5:00am and making our way to JEWTowN. That’s what they called it if I remember correctly! Loved the food and cheap things you could purchase at reasonable prices. It was a way of life for us growing up. Miss it

I still remember the first time I went there with my Dad. A street vendor asked if he'd like to buy a watch, then pulled up his right sleeve to display about 10 watches from his wrist up to his elbow. Dad passed on the deal and I had a good laugh. Now, Dad is gone and both he and Maxwell street are only memories.

The market and the entire area was destroyed the expansion of University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC). In the 90s, the Maxwell Street Market was moved by the City of Chicago to accommodate even more expansion of UIC. This all started in the 60s when Mayor Daley ruined the entire near west side and forcefully relocated tons of working class people, many being African Americans into low income project housing so they could build a modern campus for wealthy white people. The modern campus of UIC stands ontop of what used to be a thriving working class neighborhood just west of downtown

Hey Mike---I was born and raised on Taylor St. too, during the 50s and 60s. I went to Andrew Jackson grammar school (by Sheridan Park) and lived on Racine near Mother Cabrini Hospital (where I was born). I never remember any fine artwork being sold there at all, but I do remember the musicians and the guys walking around with watches on the inside of their suit coats. It was wild.
