A recent discovery that blew my mind and wasn't included: if you input hot enough water, the oil well outputs petroleum directly!!!

I guess you are using a pipe with about 100g/s of super heated water? Is it worth the alow rate of production or have you found a different way to prevent the water from phase shifting inside the pipes?
@GCFungus
@GCFungus 2 жыл бұрын
Yes, I'm aware of that one but I think it's fair to say it's not the 'standard' way of using oil wells. There certainly is more complexity in managing the superheated water, especially when venting, but it is an interesting idea. And if you do that you don't get all the fun of the boiler!
@turboimport95
@turboimport95 Жыл бұрын
This still works 100% as of right now. The trick is to heat the water as it is traveling in the pipes to like 800+ use a valve and limit the flow to 1000 g/s it will run flat out. The only issue is I haven't figured out, when you vent the pump the input pipe keeps breaking and releases steam into the room.. if this issue is solved this is op as hell. if you stop the water flow they wont vent the machine.. even if its full of water and gas.. hmm

I use and like more open design. Vacum oil biome, one pump to collect oil at the bottom, one at the top to collect gas and one to feed it water. Then just few tiles around each well so it's always at least 2 tiles deep in oil to prevent problems when venting.

Good video indeed, thanks for all the info. One thing I am not familiar with is the vacuum seal on the liquid lock. Normally I do that with two liquid locks in sequence and a gas pump in between. How do you accomplish that in a single tile? Thanks
@GCFungus
@GCFungus 2 жыл бұрын
I explained how to do this in the liquid lock tutorial bite here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/iYrHeYyBjsiDh8U - the liquid drips down the steps and should delete the gas in the middle.

Love your tutorial bites! Another method of extracting the oil is by removing the bottom right tile, allowing the oil to spill without allowing the gas to escape. Obviously, this negates the benefit of the insulated tile and vacuum seal design, as the heat is also allowed to escape, but requires less automation and piping, as you can use a central pool of oil.

That does sound like a possible way to manage them. It wouldn't work so well on my Oaissee map though!

Another fun thing you can do with oil wells is, its a bit finicky buttt.. you can inject 800 degree F water at 1kg/per sec into the oil well and get straight petroleum out of it. Its a bit of a pain to get running and relieving back pressure will cause issues lmao, breaking pipes etc. but fun fact none the less. More of a fun build not really practical because if you can make 800F water you can just build a petroleum boiler in the first place. Also niobium tepedizers make great petroleum boilers. Stack 2 on top and away you go lol.

Thanks, very helpful! I made this on an oil well that was completely submerged in oil already, and when I started pumping out the oil, it created a vacuum inside the room that cannot escape because of the liquid lock. My well isn't producing any natural gas, and it doesn't seem to be overheating and operates normally. Is this a bug?
@GCFungus
@GCFungus Жыл бұрын
It sounds like it - the visual meter on the well should fill up as it extracts oil. It then should need to be vented after enough time has passed.

Sir Fungus, your videos have been extremely helpful for learning and reference. Request, can you create a video on tile hardness and liquid depth for pressure damage? It could also perhaps go through the materials and highlight their general uses like granite being good for early SHC. Thank you very much for your work!
@GCFungus
@GCFungus 11 ай бұрын
So I'm not sure there's enough there that I haven't already kind of covered in other videos. Remember for infinite storage and such, airflow tiles and airlock doors don't break under pressure, so for any player made storage the advice would simply be use those. In terms of naturally occurring tile breaks with pressure I don't think that is really that important to cover as it will usually just happen and sort itself out - usually when it hits a hard material like abyssalite. I did cover thermal conductivity and specific heat capacity in it's own Tutorial bite too, so I think that's covered. I assume you mean that granite has a higher TC, as igneous rock has the better SHC and is the better insulator.

Hey, can I use water that is around 40 degrees Celsius to supply oil wells? Because someone said that if you use hot water the result will be different, and I'm afraid that too hot water will damage the system
@GCFungus
@GCFungus Жыл бұрын
It won't make a difference - the oil produced is always at least 90 degrees C, and only hotter if the input water is hotter. As long as it doesn't turn into steam at any point (in the pipe or in the well), then you won't have any issues.

Ah, there are so many things to do huh? For a while now I feel like I'm running out of electrical power, can I/is it worth it to build a natural gas generator from the natural gas made by this oil well?
@GCFungus
@GCFungus Жыл бұрын
Yep, oil is just one of the many things but unlocks some great builds. If you run 3 oil wells, then the nat gas produced from those will be enough to run 1 nat gas gen fully.

What material is used to make the two pumps?
@GCFungus
@GCFungus Жыл бұрын
As the oil wells tend to end up around 80-90 degrees C, gold amalgam is needed for the pumps. Of course you could use steel or Thermium is you wanted too but they aren't necessary.

I could be wrong here but I thought oil wells could indeed over pressurize? Not by the oil itself but when venting as my oil well has stopped working because of it. Granted, this was before spaced out even came out so it could be different now. I'd love some clarification if you have any 😁

Ooooooohhhhhhh, *that's* why mine always go overpressure. They need a dupe to operate intermittently. My oil wells are always on an uninhabited asteroid so I never noticed. lol Man, as much as I like ONI they could definitely do a better job of communicating some things. Thanks for the info!

anyone know how to create the vacuum for the water lock
@GCFungus
@GCFungus Жыл бұрын
I did explain that in the liquid lock tutorial bite - you can make the steps type liquid lock by simply using a bottle emptier at the top. As the liquid falls down it will delete any gas in the middle tiles creating a vacuum.
