Maybe it was just the recording, and live to the naked eye they're less distinguishable, but the Component cables blew the GCHD and HDMI mod out of the water. The color was better, there were no jagged edges without losing detail, and there were no jailbars running up and down the screen. I know the pure digital signal has more potential, so maybe the settings just need to be adjusted in the firmware?

Adam i know your a legend regarding this stuff, but im in Australia and have a PAL Gamecube with the component cables. I believe i do get progressive scan 480p or even 576p. The picture is 100 times better than composite. More colourful, so much sharper and alot more stable and still.
@RadioTails6 жыл бұрын
First of all, the BIOS Menu on the GameCube only outputs interlace (480i for JP / US | 576i for PAL). When booting a game, it will still use interlace. Second, the PAL GameCube supports both PAL and NTSC. This means NTSC 480p is possible, but you have to force the game to run in NTSC (using a Freeloader or with a mod chip). Providing the game supports 480p, an option will appear during bootup, allowing you to select progressive scan mode. Some PAL GameCube do have the progressive option in, and is possible to activate them if using a NTSC signal. TimeSplitters Future Perfect being one. Using software like Swiss, it is possible to force a game to use 240i, 240p, 480p, 480p, 576i, & 576p. I've not tried this myself, but it can be a hit or miss playing with these options: www.gc-forever.com/wiki/index.php?title=Swiss/Forced_Progressive_Compatibility_List#PAL_game_list

Not really a fan of the HDMI mod footage, I see a bunch of vertical lines on the forefront of the picture, as if its a weird visual filter. I was lucky enough to come across the component cables a few years ago, so I'm just going to stick with those. Also, you could mention that if you have a SD card loader with Action Replay with the Swiss homebrew, you can force progressive scan in most 480i only games. The only games that I have that it doesn't work with are XIII and Star Wars Clone Wars.
@TSA_576 жыл бұрын
Yeah, those vertical lines were awful, if that wasn't just a recording issue, component definitely looks better
@tuneman76886 жыл бұрын
I bought this, I wasn't impressed at all for 150$ and ended up returning it. There was a bunch of noise/lines in the picture which you wouldn't expect for a digital signal.
@thejackal0076 жыл бұрын
I agree with this. Adam, can you verify if that shows up for you in person or is this just something that is only showing up in the video? Also, can you break down the sound differences a bit more?
@StormsparkPegasus6 жыл бұрын
I haven't used this adapter (I'm using a different one), it doesn't have any noise or lines in the picture. If it has lines in the picture there's something wrong, HDMI doesn't do that.
@tuneman76886 жыл бұрын
I know for a fact it isn't the TV or cable I was using. Despite being relatively babied it could very well be the console rather than the adapter. Though I wasn't willing to troubleshoot any further and pony up for another console or adapter. The lines also weren't like the footage shown in Adam's video, I believe those are from the capture. If I had to describe it was as if the picture was an SD signal coming from an analogue source, there was just some kind of faint noise or wave/lines especially when you're in the boot menu. When you enable progressive on any game, it was a bit better for sure but still not as clear as I would've hoped for unfortunately.
@electronash6 жыл бұрын
I can confidently say that there is a serious issue with the capture setup for the HDMI example clips here. Those vertical line artifacts and general grainy image should never show up with the GC Video style devices. It looks like the capture card and / or scaler has a mismatch in pixel clocks, or something else is wrong with the encoding. Even my older 480p low-bitrate YT videos captured from my own HDMI GC device don't exhibit these issues. Are you using a scaler box between the GC HDMI and capture device? I can see why people are saying the 480p (and even 480i) Component image looks better than the HDMI mod here, but it's definitely a capture problem.

Great content man. Always love it, and keep it up.

I'm in the UK and have a PAL cube and EON adapter. I've found that forcing 480p through the swiss homebrew loader gives amazing results. I was dubious as to whether I was just messing with an interlaced picture but it looks just as good as my NTSC games do in progressive mode. Metal Gear Solid and Mario Sunshine are identical in forced pal 480p or NTSC progressive scan. This has sorted it for me as I was super disappointed with the picture from the adapter at first.

Adam, thanks for answering the question I had about using a Freeloader to play NTSC games on my PAL Gamecube. Glad it will work for ProgScan. BUT - and I've said this in another of your videos - I'm not sure why you're saying that the Gamecube component cable was not released in PAL regions. I don't know the 'official' stance of it, but, in the UK at the time I saw them in just about every game shop I went into. They were kinda expensive back then too in 2002-2003 so I held off and after I moved to New Zealand, I still saw them for sale there and bought one. Still have it to this day. So the cable might not have been 'officially' released, but the reality was that you could still get them without too much hassle, just as you could in the US after some hunting. I'm going to get a HDMI device like this now (but not this particular one - the Zeldaxpro device is cheaper and smaller).
@zaneiken076 жыл бұрын
We DID get the component cable in Australia at launch but you had to order directly from Nintendo Australia. Our TVs may have been PAL, but our input connectors followed the US standard so we got component inputs instead of RGB SCART (unless your TV was European). 480i/576i may have been the maximum for us, but it was the best image quality available down under.

For clarification purposes. Older model Widescreen HD TV's (circa 2008/2010) that still contain the S-Video input with the AV ports do a fairly descent job of rendering the 480i image. So if you have an older TV laying around, even if its 1080p, if it has the S-Video give it a shot. Looks way better than using the standard Composite on a newer model TV that contains no S-Video input. You may find that you don't even want a GCHD converter anymore.

Adam, I may need to correct you on something. The HDMI adapter is most likely NOT just a component to HDMI adapter. Reason being is, the component port isn't actually a component port. It is a straight digital out port, which was designed for other display peripherals in mind (like a concept VR headset), more so than the YPbPr. The official Nintendo component cables have the digital to YPbPr encoder built into the cables, which is why generic component cables never became available. This is why it is more likely the HDMI adapter reads the digital out and converts it to HDMI, instead of converting the digital signal to analog, then back to digital for HDMI. If it was that simple to convert the digital out to YPbPr, there would be more generic component cables on the market.
@AdamKoralik6 жыл бұрын

@RetroTechSelect6 жыл бұрын
Two questions: What are you using to up-convert your component video to digital? Are you using the Wii or GCN for the capture? The reason I ask is that dithering pattern used on the background is absent in the component clip but present in the S-video. In my own experience, YPbPr makes dithering "pop" more than S-video. Whether that's a good thing is up to taste.

The Audio from the Digital AV Port is Digital Audio- Normally that same digital Audio is converted to analog within the gamecube to output through the Analog output, but it's also routed right to the Digital output. I'd suspect this adapter takes that Digital audio and basically routes it right to the HDMI port; so the audio differences would be because of differences between the DAC in the Gamecube and the DAC in the receiver/TV.
@Whiplash476 жыл бұрын
HDMI Mod and GCHD Videos seem to look much worse than the composite in the video at least. They have weird vertical lines over the entire screen like your looking through a glare filter or something similar. Would that be a side effect of the recording/KZbin Process or is that what the picture actually looks like when you use the device?
@Broomfondle16 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I own both the Gamecube and Wii, and I'm sitting there thinking, why spend on a converter for the Gamecube when component video cable for the Wii is a lot cheaper plus you get to kill two birds with one stone. The Wii is backwards compatible, and games look awesome when in Gamecube mode through component video.
@Cspence2166 жыл бұрын
MagicThighs Exactly, you can find a Wii at a thrift shop or goodwill for $10 bucks or less and the component cables to go with them. I bought two Wii systems for $4.50 at my local Village Value just because of the price, lol. Both backwards compatible. $150 nah, lol. These for people who own framemeisters and such. If it was around the $40 range or less than i would buy. I don’t love GameCube that much to spend $150 on a converter.

We PAL users really got short-handed when it came to old gen console gaming. No progressive scan for 480 games and 50hz standard. I'm aware some PAL games for PS2 and a lot for GC had PAL60 which was nice. Europe had SCART which was very nice, not sure about Australia, but here in New Zealand SCART wasn't really a thing. So we had no RGB, and no 60hz or 480p. 50hz S-video or component was our best option generally. I much prefer NTSC, so I import NTSC games. But when it comes to RGB I have to find workarounds or do CRT mods for it to work just like NTSC users in the US. TVs with PAL and NTSC support was common enough for imports not to be much of a problem though, at least in my experience. I do have in my possesion the infamous GC Component cables though. They were my dad's and they're still in the packaging... so that's something I don't have to worry about. I own a NTSC GC so I'm definitely getting this product! It seems super beneficial and makes the GC look fantastic on a modern display.

Thanks for the thorough review! Personally, I'm going to wait for the GCVideo X2 unit that BadAss Consoles is developing since it will provide HDMI out as well as compatibility with Wii Component video cables and even RGB for a similar price ($130 plus shipping). Awesome video! My favourite videos from you are anything discussing a specific generation or anything Nintendo related. Just a slight nitpick for the Wii with the component cables, and some interesting info: There was a very slight revision that Nintendo made with the Wii later on. The later Wii models (Family edition, no GameCube ports) have better component output than the earlier Wiis. The quality is described as being almost on par with the GameCube on component, but still inferior. It closes the gap between the Wii and GameCube component output slightly. It's not just limited to the Family Edition Wiis. Some GameCube compatible Wiis that were produced later actually have the better component output. If you have a black or red original Wii, those WILL have improved component since they were produced from 2010-2011 and have the revised chip. The white Wii with the revised motherboard is relatively uncommon, due to there being more white Wiis that are older. If you have a white Wii, check the serial number. If it starts with LU70 or above, it will have the revised motherboard with the better component chip. Some Wiis starting with LU1 will have this too, but it's a crapshoot. Here's a source: shmups.system11.org/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=51789&sid=2f497331dc0252d0c001c4c174c6d76a&start=30

I don't usually do blind buys but it looks like EON has a good track record and the Super64 looks like something that can sell out quickly once people find out about it. They even have it bundled with an mCable but that was too rich for my blood but it made me think I should not get ride of my current HDMI upscaler but use it with the Super64 to see what happens. It is really is a great time to be a retro gamer. Thanks for the video and for that code!

That was indeed an awesome video. Very informativ as always. I would be interested in getting one of these nice adapters but unfortunately I live in a Pal Region (Austria) so no 480 for us. So I am not sure if it is worth getting this hdmi adapter for a pal Gamecube. According to your footage 480 i does not look that bad but not as good as it would look in 480p. So I really wonder if I should get the adapter nontheless or save the money and get a decent RGB Scart cable instead . Will be a tough decision.. Not sure yet what to do ...

This was a fair and great video. I have the ZXP latest 3.0 and honestly there really is no reason to get the eon. The ZXP is only $100, 2.5x smaller, more compatible with Tvs, and software upgradable (heard significant update coming to gcvideo). Build quality is fine. Video quality is the same and honestly think it is the better value for the price. You should contact ZXP to see if you can get a unit, a comparison video/review would be great!!

iPhone User wait wait wait? How did you get it for only 100$? I tried ordering it and he charged me 146$?!?!?

iPhone User also his older models broke hdtvs and the gamecubes

Rainbow Dash it's $100 plus shipping. It's been like that since 2.0. I've been tracking the progress ever since 1.0. Yes older revisions damaged consoles, but the 3.0 fixed that so it's an irrelevant point today for options. I've been using mine non stop for hours it's been flawless.

Serhat Abaci I recieved mine from ZXP a couple of weeks back after having to wait a while for it, @ 100 buck plus shipping btw, really ot comes down to convience. Whether you want it quickly in a few days, via amazon, or at a cheaper price. But ZXP will get to you in time. Its just not going to be immediate.

i thought the wii and gcube had the same video port, and thus the wii comp cables work on the gcube.

Hey Adam, I'm one of the unfortunate PAL region users and while not actually focused on this product in particular, was hoping to get your advice. PAL Wii with Genuine Component RVL-011 cables through an OSSC for PAL GC Games OR Any GC with Genuine Component cables through an OSSC for PAL GC games Just hoping the OSSC transcoding might compensate for the 480i on PAL GC games, similar to how it greatly benefits PS2. Would love your thoughts on this! Thanks!

Europe didn't get progressive scan options for games, but the games that had that option had 60 Herz options instead, which might be just as nice as a 480p output. I'm pretty sure North America didn't have 60 Herz options, so I think a digital 480I or 576I resolution + upscaled to 1080p while being 60 herz is still worth it. Might not be 480p + being upscaled to 1080p, but 60 Herz is still nice.

Dennis van Rijswijk 60 Hz wasn't an option in NA, it was the standard.
@dennisvanrijswijk976 жыл бұрын
Erik Heijden Wow allright. NA versions are much better then lol. I thought I read somewhere that N64 and Gamecube games had better framerate with PAL versions or something and that NA TV's could only get 50HZ.

Actually Adam what if you use a Scart cable using a pal unit and game BUT also using a framemeister at progressive mode? Wouldn’t a framemeister be able to upscale this and improve the picture quality or at least be equivalent. Cheers dude! 😎
@AdamKoralik6 жыл бұрын
No, that won't be as good. Doesn't work that way.

My way of thinking is that a device to connect a console to the TV should not cost more than the console itself.

Good video but I wasn't the GameCube intended to play on TV's with scanlines?
@jamesclarke63546 жыл бұрын
Great video, I am a GameCube user in the pal region with the official RGB Nintendo scart cable, so what I kind of get from your video is that it’s not really the money to get this adapter as I won’t benefit from progressive scan??

U should do side by side screenshots so we can compare not off of memory. Also I’m using component cables on my 4K tv is there anything I can use to stop the negative effects of upscaling? (I believe quality gets worse right?)

Thank you for this interesting demo Adam. I've already my GC connected with component cable (upscaled to 1080p through an AV amplifier). Do you think it could be anyway worth buying?

Depends on I'm your intentions. Definitely helps with future proofing and recording.

Dude, both 480i and 480p are the same resolution, even with VGA, component or HDMI. Same thing with both 1080i and 1080p.
