Gamecube had a dedicated S3 chip that was solely for texture decompression. So the disc size was really not an issue. This is what allowed big games to fit on it if the developers utilized it properly. Look how much game is packed into Rebel Strike... it had the whole game plus the entire Rogue Leader game in multiplayer...

In my opinion GCN > N64. GameCube had RE4, Metroid Prime series, Wind Waker, Twilight Princess, Smash Bros Melee, the best Mario Kart still to date with 8 behind it, and that's Double Dash. There was also Kirby's Air Ride, Paper Mario Thousand Year Door, I can go on. Don't get me wrong I like N64 too, but it didn't quite age well like the GCN did. Most if not all franchises that were on N64 evolved greater doing the GCN days (MKDD > MK64, Melee > Smash 64), etc.

It wasn't just the discs/dvd's. It was also Nintendo's philosophy with third party development teams, going all the way back to even their prime (SNES). They always believed (and still do) that the most important thing for them is their first parties and NOT on maximizing the number of different developers on their system. Iwata kept empasizing a long belief by Yamauchi that Nintendo does not believe in third party support. You should look up comments by developers at GDC before the GameCube launched, they were all joking that they would probably start developing for that system in 5 years once Nintendo releases some information about the system and starts conversations with third parties. Even saying stuff like: Nintendo is making the same old mistakes and we have no incentives of working with them. Compare that to Xbox and PS2 launches, both companies asked for massive developer support and were going round these developers to give them kits, info etc. Whereas Nintendo didn't even deliver a development kit 10 months before launch. Imanishi (Nintendo dude) even said they are not approaching ANY third party developers, because they expect that those developers would come to them once the install base of the GameCube started growing. They were so fucking arrogant. They think thought could bully third parties like they did in the SNES era. Nintendo always kept third parties in the dark and had horrible relationships with them because they seem to live inside of this bubble as a company. Even when Sony hit them with a sledgehammer with the PS1 and showed them how to treat third parties and how instrumental third parties are to the succes of the consoles, they still didn't learn. I'm sorry to say but Nintendo DESERVED this, they brought this on to themselves.
@weathersponge50005 жыл бұрын
Wow, good insight. A lot of people think that Gamecube didn't really get 3rd party Support just cause of the mini discs couldn't hold as much storage capacity, but for most developers it wasn't a problem since many games wouldn't really go over the 1.5GB Storage capacity. Like you said, it was Nintendo's arrogance thinking that all they need is their 1st party titles to be successful and disrespected 3rd party developers. While the Gamecube was profitable, it was far from the breakout success it could've been if nintendo actually gave a shit about 3rd party developers. Also do you have a source for this? because I'd like to read it and learn more about the gamecube's history
@WaterKirby19944 жыл бұрын
There were plenty of 3rd Party games on GameCube though, you have to be blind to miss them. Nintendo gave Sega their devkit & they made the GameCube Sonic's home once they went 3rd Party. Nintendo was confident that by partnering with Sega & having the best exclusives they would be successful. Nintendo were actually treating 3rd Parties fairly well during the GameCube Era compared to the crap they tried to pull during the NES & SNES days.
@BreakingJP834 жыл бұрын
Probably because they realized it was inevitable if they intended to stick around that they needed to cooperate and work with 3rd party developers more than anything. Competition I'm sure was signaling more than anything to Nintendo that they needed to do so for survival or suffer the fate of Dreamcast.

Nah, the Wii U is more comparable to the Virtual Boy at best, at worst, you insult even the Virtual Boy in such a comparison. Hideo Kojima doesn't like Twin Snakes? What? Where did you hear that? The reason Konami didn't rerelease that version of the game in HD was because they wanted the HD remasters to be of just games that Kojima directed himself. He didn't direct Twin Snakes, but he DID help with its development. In fact, he had them ham up the cutscenes to be over the top because he liked that style more, as later MGS games would show. Even then, Konami can rerelease the games however they want. They just have no respect for their developers or customers anymore.

AdamKoralik I think the xbox had a little bit more power, but not by much. When you compare Metroid prime 2 vs halo 2, the graphics on metroid look way better than halo. In the end it all comes down to the developer. Some developers pushed the limits of the console, while others didnt.

Ironically, the GameCube had some sort of feel to me that I haven't been able find with any other console. Probably with the Wii U or to a lesser extent the PSP. We had quite the great times playing Mario Party 4, Wind Waker, Crash and Harry Potter 2!

I like the shape & design, I like the handle, the small CDs, the boot up/menu, I love the controller and the different colors, the whole machine fits my personality perfectly. But surely nostalgia & memories are a big part of that. I never had an original Xbox or a SNES etc, and unfortunately these feel stone cold to me (don't get me wrong, the SNES has awesome games), I just don't feel it with any of them. I know it had no Mario launch title but Luigis Mansion was great, and I actually thought that game fitted the machine, and vice versa, perfectly. It was new, fresh, fun and dared to be different (ie not Mario), just like the GC. Please dont thinking I'm bashing your opinion, as I'm really not, I enjoy you're vids.

Okay no, the purple wasn't the kiddy one stop making stuff up. The SNES was also purple,the N64 variants which are the most seemed out. At launch it was only available in purple, it wasn't selling because of the backlash of it not looking mature enough. They released the black color and phased out the purple system. It's why when the game boy player released it was only in black, not because "not support the kiddy one". Then the platinum color was released late in the systems life. Quick note only the purple and black gamecubes have the port for the high def cable.

Great video, dude! I fucking love the GCN, and it's one of my favorite and most nostalgic game consoles of all time. The entire 6th Generation was just amazing overall. I will disagree with it not having a vibe though. I like to think of the consoles as kids in high school. The PS2s are the popular, preppy kids. The Xboxes are the jocks. The GameCubes are the weird kids that are actually pretty cool when you get to know them. One KZbinr (for the life of me, I can't remember who) described the GCN years as Nintendo's weird experimental college years, which makes sense, as Nintendo did experiment a lot with their titles this gen. They gave Mario a jetpack, gave Mario Kart two racers, turned Metroid into a first person shooter/adventure, and made Zelda cel shaded. Plus, stuff like the GBA link cables.

I agree with Adam on Nintendo making a rather good attempt to win back the mature crowd. With Eternal Darkness, Resident Evil, RE:0, RE4, the ports of 2 and 3, Metriod Prime series, MGS The Twin Snakes etc, etc. The console itself is a nice beast, only held back by the micro-disc format and Nintendo's seemingly confused efforts to market it and continuing alienation of 3rd party devs.

I don't know man... While I under the aspect of the "feeling" behind the aura of a console aka it's gravitas of subjective culture, there is something about the GameCube that I absolutely love. Hell I love the classic purple console too! But in this gen I had a GameCube and an Xbox. I honestly played them equally, with the Xbox only getting favor from its online aspect. When the Resident Evil deal came out, it only made me love the console even more. It also had this odd power to it, for some reason it had some phenomenal looking games, yet awful ones too. Between its unique aspect and stellar releases, it's truly the black swan of gaming next to the Saturn. There is something about both of those consoles that feels truly unique, and will never be replicated again. Speaking of a "feeling" that consoles have, this current gen feels pretty empty too. Maybe it's just because the unique nature of the consoles that drain it of personality, it's just hard to find a "feeling" out of 8th gen

The things I remember most of the GameCube are the outstanding Wavebird, and the kick ass GB Player. To this very day I still use the GB Player because of just how awesome it was. Couple that with component cables and you have yourself the perfect way to capture quality footage of GB, GBC, and GBA games. It’s amazing. In terms of the system itself, I never liked the look of it. I always felt it looked more like a toy than a game console, and for the longest time the games gave that same impression. For as good as Super Mario Sunshine or Wind Waker were, they both had a distinct kiddie image. It wasn’t until they really started pushing the more mature titles like the Resident Evil series, P.N.03, Metal Gear Solid: Twin Snakes, and Eternal Darkness that my opinion of the system started to change. Today I look back and remember there really were some truly superb exclusives on the platform, and how it was Nintendo’s last real attempt to cater to the core gamer. The Wii wasn’t designed for us, and while they’re starting to gain my interest more with the Wii U, the GameCube was clearly the last Nintendo platform I really adored. Great series Adam.

Zelda Wind Waker and Zelda Twilight Princess did everything Ocarina of Time did but better and also more, and StarFox Assault was the direction StarFox games should have gone going forward, plus Metroid Prime, Soul Kalibur 2, Rogue Squadron. I dont really follow the nostalgia for the N64 much. I know a lot of people say StarFox sucked after 64, but I still really enjoyed Assault, moreso than 64 these days. Zero tried to recapture what 64 did and failed miserably and the direction StarFox has gone lately bums me out.

Gamecube was a big part of my childhood. Before then it was some pc games, playing Smash Bros and Majora's Mask at Alfys Pizza or McDonald's. Then our neighbor sold us their GameCube and we got Sims Bustin Out which was fun, but then we got Smash Bros Melee. All day nonstop man. Of course later I'd get Luigi's Mansion, Super Mario Sunshine, Mario Kart Double Dash, Star Fox Assault. Then there were multi plats like Lego Star Wars, The Incredibles, Monster House. Good times. Edit: Ok, it's pretty sweet you liked my comment man. I really respect you and your opinions. I watched your vids around 5 years ago when I was in high school, and loved them. I don't really see where you're getting the whole "purple for kids, black for adults" idea at. I own the purple Gamecube (purple is badass) and it's the shit, I worship that godly block of plastic. In addition to this, the Gameboy Player *was* released in purple (as well as spice orange) in Japan. Nintendo just opted to only release the black model in the west. Nice video other than that. I love the Gamecube, it's one of my favorite consoles ever made. It just had so much going for it that I think most consumers ignored at the time. Yeah, it didn't have DVD or CD playback, but how many people would actually say that those are relevant forms of media storage anymore? Most people collect their stuff digitally now, and many of the people who don't have likely moved on higher quality products like Blu-ray discs. At the end of the day, it all comes down to whether or not a system has good games. And Gamecube definitely does. After all, that's what gaming machines were created for, right? To this day all of these superfluous media apps/content still don't interest me all that much. Sure, it's nice to have Netflix and Blu-ray playback on my PS3, but it's not the reason why I bought it.

Josh Leitzel While I agree that it's a great console- even the look. It is an odd/quirky design. I love the GameCube Design. it's so cute! And it doesn't break, like...ever. I'm sure you could burn it and it would still work. And especially as a kid back then I was constantly thinking, that the GameCube had more games for me. And the GameCube Controller is still the best one in my opinion. The only thing that REALLY sucks is, that they took the 480p mode out of all the PAL games. There was a model of the GameCube that you could plug Component cables in to, but no game supported 480p. I think there are 2 or 3 games you can get to run in 480p when you play them on a NTSC console, but that's the one think I really dislike about the GameCube. Other than that, it's a great console with a lot of fantastic games. Especially with the GameBoy Player.

I purchased a GameCube in 2006 in a Cashconverters (Pawn Shop in the UK) for £30, that was with a controller, cables and a memory card. I only got it to play the Resident Evil games that you couldn't get on the PS2 or Xbox. One of the toughest things to get recently was a GAMEBOY player, although you can find the unit's easily, a lot of people have lost the Start Up Disc making it useless. On eBay a guy was selling a console with no cables or a controller but he did have a GAMEBOY player with the disc! Just managed to get it for £55! That's how rare the discs have gotten in the UK. I probably won't get the component cable as they are stupidly expensive. Great videos mate :-)

We thought about the developers as our main customers. In particular for GameCube, we spent three years working with Nintendo of America and with all sorts of developers, trying to understand the challenges, needs, and problems they face. First among these is the rising cost of development. The GameCube can see high performance without too much trouble; it isn’t a quirky design, but a very clean one. It was important we didn’t require jumping through hoops for high performance to be achieved. On top of that, it is rich in features, and we worked to include a dream group of technical features that developers requested. - Greg Buchner, ArtX's Vice President

This whole "generation numbering" thing is so confusing. Whenever somebody says "sixth generation" I never know what the hell they're talking about. Can't we just refer to these generations in a simpler way, relating it to something more specific? Everybody knows what someone means when they say the "8-bit era", or the "16-bit era" because those were both big marketing terms of that era. People also know exactly what you mean when they can relate it to a single console, such as "The Xbox era" or "The PS1 Era" and it lets them think about the consoles that were out around that same time. However, I know that I (as well as many others) get super confused when somebody says "The second generation of consoles" or "The third generations of consoles", because, like... it's so vague and nonspecific. There's nothing to relate that number to. It's not like all of the consoles were labelled with a big number. The SNES didn't have a big "3" stamped on the box.
***** but, why go with such standardized naming conventions when nobody is actually familiar with that standardization? It would be like if I said "hey, let's all start calling seahorses a 'first generation creature' and humans a 'sixth generation creature' " or something. Things are named arbitrarily, and the names of classifications also come about arbitrarily, they don't need to make 100% sense. Trying to force a standardized name is just going to confuse most people... and isn't the entire point of language to let us understand each other? There's enough obscure video game jargon as it is. We don't need more.

God, this is some terrible logic. Everyone knows what Generation standardization is & understands how each console qualifies. Saying stuff like “Xbox era” or “PS1 era” is more confusing and just outright tacky. Numbering each generation is easier because each console shares certain similarities that identify their respective generations. 8-bit era doesn’t indicate any more than at least CPU processing.

13:51 - I don't see anything wrong with that Nintendo logo Adam. I think that Nintendo logo goes with the console name and not referencing the company. Remember the Super NES logo? The Nintendo name is part of that console name too and it is its own logo. The same when Nintendo introduced the N64 for the first time, the first logo was called Nintendo Ultra 64 and the Nintendo name on that spelled almost exactly like that similarly to the GameCube logo. Besides the traditional red Nintendo logo was located underneath the ESRB rating of that GameCube game so it's not like they forgot what their logo looks like. At least it's not like the Wii and Wii U where they never put their company name as part of those two console's logo, almost like they are ashame to associate their company name with both of those systems. The Nintendo Switch at least brought back the name as part of the logo.

The GameCube is such a great console. I think the reason it didn't do that well was Nintendo had so many ideas, and didn't know what to do with it. Great hardware, but with a limitation they didn't need (mini DVDs). They programmed stereoscopic 3D into it, but didn't use it because nobody had 3D TVs. They had the motion controller, but waited for the Wii. The had the Game Boy Advance connection cable, which was great for the games it was used on (Animal Crossing in particular) but basically because useless once the DS came out. The Wii U is facing the same thing. Lots of ideas, great hardware, but nobody knows what to do with it. By the time they figure out, it's too late.

Something worth noting, which I just figured out, is that the Gameboy player adapter is region free. The start up disc is required to match that of the region of the GameCube. That being said, if the start up disc is Japanese and the GameCube is Japanese, it can still play US Gameboy games. I just got myself an Orange Spice GameCube with a region switch mod. It also has the Gameboy player with the Japanese start up disc. I guess Japanese Gameboys also have the same feature where they can play US Gameboy games. I'm glad I'm making this investment now.

I think the GameCube would have done a Lot better had it realeased about a year earlier. By the time it came out many people either had already bought a PS2 or had decided to get one later. The XBox was already on the horizon and many gamers decided to wait for it. This really put the GameCube in a difficult spot. Releasing the console as late as in May 2002 in Europe was just beyond stupid. By that time it simply could not attract anyone outside of Hardcore Nintendo fans anymore. Had this thing seen a world wide release in Winter of 00/01 things would have looked a lot differently.

Love the gamecube. Although I still have mine I don't have the cables. So I decided to use the wii. One problem with that is that I have to start it up with the wii remote.
