For me, definitely 'one bike to rule them all'. But I don't compete and I search for fun and adventure in riding bikes, and not so much for marginal gains and pure performance. Hence for me, this would be rather a gravel bike. And while I think Pinarello makes really beautiful frames, I can't afford even for cheapest of them.
@brannmacfinnchad90566 ай бұрын
Definitely; I would definitely prefer a /comfortable/ aero bike over an ultralight one. Latest grand fondo I was dropping the peloton with their race bikes on climbs with my rando bike (Velo-orange polyvalent, wide tyres, and an rando bag....heavy and super not aero), but they were always catching up and I was struggling to hold their wheels during the flats and downhills. Jury is out whether the ability to carry pastries easily was worth the aero penalty.
@stevecaldwell82846 ай бұрын
Yes to the "do it all", but dependent on where the majority of riding is done (flat, rolling or in the Alps like Ollie). Trek to be the next one with a Madone/Emonda mix?

Somebody won 2 TdFs, the 2024 Giro, a ton of one-day classics and 90% of the races he started in 2024. And he did all that on a single aero/lightweight bike. I don't think it was the rider's skill, talent and power...it must have been the bike! So I am going with one bike all day and year :-)

Aero bottles could be safer since it appears there are flat sides that will deter a thrown empty from rolling back into the riding path. From the single image it is hard to tell if a round bottle, from neutral support, may also fit in the cage.

One problem with the Trek aero cages: you're away in a break in the Tour on a baking hot day, your team car hasn't been able to get up to you and there aren't any soigneurs with bottles at the roadside. You've no bottles left and you're desperate for a drink, so the motorbike with the spare bottles comes alongside. The only problem is, you can't fit a round bottle in your cage. And you're outside the zone where you can dispose of bottles at the roadside. What do you do?

The problem I see with having aero bottles is that if a rider in a break needs a bottle from the neutral service car, or one of those situations where someone gets a bottle from another team (I see that from time to time) that wouldn't work. They might be able to take a sip or pour some on themselves, but they won't be able to put it in their bottle cage.

An aero bike and a climbing bike feel very different. Do you want to soar over the top of the hill, and bomb down the descents? Or do you want to get that incredible instant feedback when applying power on the hill? My current bike (if I spent a bit more money) could make a pretty decent climbing bike, but the reality is that I'm just not strong enough the get the benefit of the snappy response. I'm slogging up the hills and saving 1 kg isn't enough to kick me out of slog-mode. For that reason, I think if I were to choose a high end bike it would be aero all the way. The "one bike to rule them all" is interesting, but probably not for me. If I'm spending a ton of cash, then I want to pick a direction and go all in. At the low end (that I can afford), then it barely matters because it's compromises all the way down. Though, again, at my level I think those compromises are appropriate and I might as well save the cash and have fun with an inexpensive bike.

There have been more than a few times we have seen in a challenging road race situation where no team service is available, another team giving a bottle to a rider in need. I bought a trek madone because I liked the look. The new one is about to look skinny and fragile. The new one bike fits all are probably faster around my local etape as if you don’t get up the hill in this you don’t do well. The difference between a fast lightweight/ aero bike in most races is negligible. The weights of these bikes are always given on tiny frames. When they manage to get a 60cm frame to legal limit I will be impressed.

Speed, handling, comfort... If they are worse, is it by much. I'm guessing they're not super nimbly-bimbly, but 6 airfoil shaped CF spokes seem likely to be hella rigid. What would they be like for daily use? Are the 6 spokes quite aero hampering versus multiple thin spokes or a disc? But do they offer better control in cross winds, maybe even be competitive? (I have been watching RCTestFlight's boat propellor series where in water (7x density?) less is blades better)

Am pretty sure Trek has gone to the Aero bottles is because with the combining of the Emonda & Madone the new Gen 8 Madone is less aero than the Gen 7. So to be able to say it is light as Emonda and just as aero or more aero than Gen 7 Madone is by sticking the aero bottles on it. So I suspect that they have the Trek-Lidl team running them as pure marketing.

Been saying it for a while now, world tour teams should be restricted to 2 bikes. One for TTs, and one for all other stages. Manufacturers are reducing their line ups because it's no longer sustainable to manufacture so many different frame sets. UCI should reflect this economic reality. It would incentivise manufacturers to build the best all round bike, like Pinarello, rather than speciality bikes suited to specific terrains. This would also reduce cost, for R&D, spares and logistics with the number of bikes reduced by 1/3 in the case of some teams.
