In this video, we look at strong and weak acids. We explore the difference between a strong and weak acid and how we can use the pH scale to see this. We also see what is meant by an "order of magnitude".
This video is based on the AQA spec. This video may be appropriate for iGCSE / O Level Chemistry. Please consult your specification. The Amazon link above is an affiliate link. This provides a small commission which helps to support freesciencelessons. The cost remains the same to you. @@onetwo4052 This is late but a strong acid has stronger ionising abilities (splitting hydrogens) ,e.g HCl is a strong acid as it completely splits it's Hydrogen ions, where as a Carboxylic acid is considered a weak acid as it doesn't completely split it's hydrogens ions (donate hydrogens). Acids are protons donors the stronger the acid the more protons it will donate. A proton being i H+ ion.

Hey there sir. Doing revision. Quick question. In bases, is it true that the more reactive the metal, the more it is acidic or alkaline?
@Freesciencelessons
@Freesciencelessons 5 жыл бұрын
No not strictly true. Don't forget that non-metal compounds are acidic. Metal compounds (oxides and hydroxides) are bases and alkalis. The alkalinity depends on how easily the compound dissociates in water. Group 1 hydroxides do dissociate very easily but that is not linked to the reactivity of the metal (it is due to the charge density of the metal ion, which is beyond GCSE).

Hi sir - what is the difference between (using hydrogen on its own as an example) 2H and H2 -(a small 2) Thanks

2H is two individual atoms of hydrogen not chemically bonded (this is not very common as it's unstable). H2 is two atoms of hydrogen which have chemically bonded to form a hydrogen molecule (this is very common as it is relatively stable).

So is pH a measure of how strong an acid is or how concentrated it is?
@AdoptedPoo
@AdoptedPoo 6 жыл бұрын
How strong and how concentrated it is, because pH is the measure of how many Hydrogen ions are in an acid or alkali. So pH 1 is more concentrated than pH 6 as pH 1 is 1*10^8 times the magnitude in contrast with pH 1 which is 10* the magnitude(the lower the pH the stronger and more concentrated the acid is).

@Freesciencelessons
@Freesciencelessons 9 ай бұрын
The pH DECREASES (ie goes towards 0) if the concentration of H+ increases. This can happen with a strong acid (eg hydrochloric) or if we increase the concentration of an acid (because there will be more H+ ions in a given volume). I hope that helps.
