at q25 how do you know its a right angle?
@MrTompkins2 жыл бұрын
Did you mean in the triangle face? In the question it says AE=BE, which tells me it is an isosceles triangle. It is a handy property of isosceles triangles that you can cut them in half in this way using a line from the top down to the centre of the base line, which will always meet at 90 degrees. This property also comes in useful in circle theorem questions

in question 9b how did you get 520/1420 from 1-900/1420 ?
@MrTompkins6 жыл бұрын
Hey SugazzTrash - use your calculator (if you can) or otherwise you can use the fact that 1 is the same thing as 1420/1420, so 1420/1420 - 900/1420 gives you 520/1420. (numerator subtract numerator, denominator stays the same)

Sir, what are your 5 top tips for getting a grade 9?
@MrTompkins Жыл бұрын
Make sure you’ve seen all the past papers and gone over the tough ones at the end. Don’t skimp on the practical topics like constructions. Get the Casio fx-991 - it’s got a bunch of extra features that are handy for GCSE. Re-read the question after you finished to check you’ve actually answered it. Ask yourself at the end of each question, “Is my answer sensible?” - of it isn’t, you’ve made a mistake!

If memory serves, the grade 9 boundary was 189 marks last year, so your score was comfortably over! It will probably go up a little this year, but not that much 😉

hiya on Q10 wouldnt it be 70 rather than 60 degrees
@MrTompkins Жыл бұрын
Yes it would be 70 - I'm confused though, as that is what I wrote! Are you referring to part a or part b?
@keiraplume5457 Жыл бұрын
@@MrTompkins Sorry, bc you’ve got 2x + 10= 60 but if x=30 that would equal 70?
@MrTompkins Жыл бұрын
@@keiraplume5457 I think you are referring to part b of the question. In part a, it's assumed that the lines are parallel, which means x=30 and therefore the angle is 70. But in part b, it says actually the lines are NOT parallel, and that angle w=60. This means we need to rework the problem now with 2x+10=60 and resolve to see if this increases or decreases the value of y.

I am sorry but I didn't get 8(a)! Could you please help me, sir?
@MrTompkins Жыл бұрын
I use the fact that the parallelograms are congruent (same shape/size) to show that the base angles of the triangle must be equal. So the triangle is at least isosceles. We are not given any angles to work with here, but it’s possible that those base angles could be 60. If they were, the top angle would be too, so it would be equilateral. But from the information provided, we don’t know that, which is why I ticked that it might or might not be.

for question 23 dont u have solve the square to find out turning point
@MrTompkins7 ай бұрын
Do you mean complete the square? Yes, we could have done that and that would have given the turning point no problem, and in most "find the turning point" questions, that would be the best method. In this particular case though, we would have had to find b first, and it was easier to go on and find the second root instead, and use the fact that the x coordinate of the turning point always lies half way between these (due to symmetrical nature of parabolas).

@veravera44403 жыл бұрын
Thank you Mr T. So useful. Could you explain why we draw tangent in question 24?
@MrTompkins3 жыл бұрын
We are asked to find the speed in Q24 at a given time. Now speed is the rate of change of distance with respect to time - in other words it is the gradient of a distance-time graph. Finding a gradient of a straight line is simple, as it has the same gradient along its whole length. So we just need to find two points on the line and measure change in y and change in x and divide them to find the gradient. With a curve, things are a bit more complicated as the gradient is constantly changing. You can see this graph starts heading upwards, then flattens off, and then heads downwards. So when you want to find a gradient of a curve, you need to say at what point you are finding the gradient, construct a tangent at that point, and measure the rise/step of the tangent to use as an estimate of the gradient of the line at that point. A bit of a long explaination, but hopefully it now makes sense?

I’m pretty sure the answer to q9 probability is incorrect because you added 480 to 420 without changing the denominators
@MrTompkins4 жыл бұрын
Hi RizOne - yes, if I were adding them as fractions, I'd need to find a common denominator. But here I had already found the ACTUAL number of boy/girl students by scaling up the probabilities by using equivalent fractions. Once I got the denominators to be the same as the number of students, I could simply read off the numerators and use those to calculate the actual student numbers. Hope that makes sense!
