Thanks for watching everyone! There is info and gear links up top in description. I will do review on the Kelly Kettle soon. www.kellykettleusa.com/ultimate-stainless-trekker-kit

Those Kelly Kettles are a unique form of Rocket Stove, the Trekker at 0.6 litres of water are great for the slow down, stay & play days. Like many twig stoves it must be fed with some patience, and pouring with confidence can take some practise, the additional accessory stove is a nice feature for continuing the embers and fire for small snacks. Great for the solo tripper. On colder mornings i still reach for my white gas MSR XGK, just to get her done. Coffee NOW !!! Cheers!

zero music. zero narration. just the therapeutic sounds of the winter woods and crackling fire. another great video. My wife, my kids, and I are starting up a monthly camping night. Training in the back yard first for them to get used to it, and hopefully eventually getting out into some off-grid stuff later on. I'm planning to set up the dual plash palatka shelter next to the larger family tent as well. We'll see how it goes!

I always liked how you took normal stuff into the woods, your little frying pan, Mora knife. I was walking through a consignment shop the other day and a booth had random pot lids. No pots, just these random lids. I walk a little farther and I see a little frying pan I recognize...I swear it's the same one you have! Old, Revere Wear brand, copper bottom, beautiful piece made in the US when we Americans used to make stuff. I picked it up, pristine condition, walked back over to the other booth and found a lid that fit like it was made for it. Both pieces were $10. Now if only I could get out into the woods! Thanks for going for me!

👍 Good point. There is a lot of 'normal stuff' out there that can assist in that one does not have to 'break the bank' in order to enjoy the outdoors .. or anything else for that matter. 'Skulking around' in hardware, discount and thrift stores with eyes open and 'lateral thinking mode engaged' has its advantages. More than once, I have come across something that could be used very effectively for something not originally envisaged in it's Design Marketing Intent. The secret is to look at the item and 'what it does' instead of 'what it was specifically made to do'.

I'm a fan of the Kelly Kettle, and also have the TREKKER. I've been carrying the Cold Steel Spetznaz Shovel for a couple of decades. An aside due to the current political situation; I have no animosity toward Russians (I have both Russian and Ukrainian friends), but I hate communists. As you've demonstrated, the Russians make very practical and robust gear. 'Nuff said on that.

A very excellent cold AF Northern NY clipper snowstorm camp out. Looks like several weeks ago subzero weather 18inch storm The ghillie kettle was a pleasant surprise. Glad you brought out the heavy gauge plastic to close up that shelter. I like that survival belt equipment idea, makes great sense to distribute and lighten the pack load. I appreciate the realism you bring by doing it for real in the freezing blizzard .i would have looked hard at the hot stove shelter setup, but I get it.

Hey Jess, it looks like you were having the same weather that is going on up here at the moment! Kelly Kettle's are amazing at what they do. There's so many hacks out there for them too. Once I came up with is to get some of the square style animal pen type metal fencing that you can find at places like tractor supply. It's not the normal chicken fencing where the wire is twisted, but made of thicker wire, and is in square grids of different hole sizes from 1/2"x1/2" and up. Usually the galvanized is pretty easy to find, but if you are lucky, you can find stainless steel too. It comes in a roll, usually around 24" x 10'. If you make a cone out of some that fits in the fire tray, and comes up snug but not tight to the inner sides about half way into the kettle/chimney part, you can now lift the kettle off to pour a bit out and then reset it on the fire pan without having your fuel and coals spill out as the screen will hold them all in. You can still fuel through the air holes on the side, or down through the top, as normal, and it takes up no extra space at all as it can stay inside the kettle when packed. It can also serve as an open fire too, allowing a bit more options as far as fuel type and length. My only other peeve with mine which is the old style with the natural cork plug is that if you fill it fairly full and it gets to a roiling boil, it can burble out the spout and inevitably splashes down into the fire pan at best making a soupy, gungy mess of your ash and char material, and at worst putting out your fire. I cut the top and bottom off a soup can then cut it to look sort of like a maple syrup spigot that you would see sticking out of the tree (not the pointy bit in the tree, if that makes sense). Slice it lengthways and trim that slice so that you can slip it over the lip around the spout. The top should be just wide enough to fit between the lip and the kettle body, and you can squeeze the two sides of the split to add tension to it so it holds in place. Make sure the longer "spout" part is at the bottom and is long enough to extend past the fire pan. I know this description sucks, but the only other thing I can liken it to would be the type of finger picks you see some folks use on guitars and banjos that slide over each finger. With it in place, should it overboil, it will not land in the pan, and the extension can be removed and put inside the kettle for storage and transport, again, not taking up any extra space. I hope I was just clear enough to give you the ideas, but vague enough for you to run with it your own way if either interest you! Either way, it's great to see you out again! Those Kochanski super shelters are amazing!
@EnduranceRoom2 жыл бұрын
Hey Sean! Thanks so much for the tips on the mods! I think I have a pretty clear idea of what you were describing. This was my first trip out with the kettle, but did see what you mean about the coals spilling out when removing the kettle. The wire sounds pretty interesting. I will keep an eye out for some. Appreciate the tips! Have a good one my friend!
@DKFX12 жыл бұрын
Those sound like some useful tips for the kettle. Thanks. With the green whistle plug the issue with water spilling out and dousing the fire with water, is not really a big problem. Mostly it will be just steam escaping and if a little bit of water comes out, it's such a tiny amount that it doesn't cause any trouble.

I don't have a Kelly Kettle but I have a Swiss Vulcan stove I've used during hunting in my yard. I love that you can use anything to heat them with. I started with a fuel tab from an mre and literally picked up semi dry leaves and twigs around me and kept it going. It will burn as long as you want and have fuel. Heated my stew left overs up in no time. I ordered a Swedish mess kit stove and want to try that out as well. Cant wait. Thanks Jess, always enjoy your videos and the beautiful scenery.

Great job on the camera work and the angles. I am really missing winter camping. Somehow I have a herniated disc in my back so hiking or going.into the woods right just isn't going to happen until I'm all healed up. I've always loved the hard winter storms, even as a kid. As an adult I would go out and go for a cruise in the truck, then it was camping in the storms off my favorite trails. I like the belt idea. Gives me some ideas since I have some extra battle belts sitting around. Was you or did you do a video on the belt and how you have it set up? I'm also curious as to how much of a difference it makes or how it feels in conjunction with your pack. Keep up the great work my friend.
@EnduranceRoom2 жыл бұрын
Thank you my friend! Sorry to hear about the back. Been there a few times. Some simple body weight exercises helped me get back on track. My brother had similar problems, got surgery and was wrecked. Checkout the McGill Big 3 exercises for back pain. A lot of hanging on a pullup bar also helps to decompress the discs. You want to keep your feet in contact with the ground and adjust the pressure. I did an earlier video on the belt rig last summer. Survival Belt Rig. I like it a lot. Lets my pack run very light, with the load on the hips.

Hey sister! We are doing good here. Hope you and yours are doing well too. I have used walls in the past, but honestly haven’t noticed that much difference. Typically, the wind here is from the west and some from the east, and my shelter will be facing south, so wind is blowing left-right out front. The super shelter concept is worth exploring if you haven’t played around with one yet. This one could have been better (raised bed and larger plastic sheet), but was considerably warmer than outside or open shelter. Have a good one!
