GE Fridge: How to Remove/Change the Water Filter (filter attached is Blue) version

In this video, I'll show how to remove and install the water filter on the GE side-by-side fridge. This may be similar to other GE fridges as well.
The GE fridge filter is very simple and easy to remove and install.

My first time since I bought my GE fridge, Model No.:PFE28KYNDFS . To change the water filter (RPWFE) swing open the door, if your housing that the water filters fits into is BLACK, you twist the filter counter-clockwise to remove and twist clockwise to replace. If the housing is GRAY then you simply PULL on the filter to remove it. To replace with new water filter, just line it up and make sure the label that says, Rear, is facing the inside wall of the fridge and push until it cannot be inserted any more. Luckily I didn't try to twist it off when removing. I had to look at a couple of videos to make sure of the procedure. thanks

Models with a gray surround where the filter mounts and swings simply lock in without twisting. GE made things worse when they switched to this push on but don't twist model. This video doesn't help at all. He should have specified there are two version of filter housings and two ways to replace the filter. I just figured out, after a year and destroying five of these pricy filters, mine is one which the filter simply pushes in. GE should send out stickers for owners to put on the filter access door stating "do not twist in new filters". As well as add the same stickers to new models. This is the first refrigerator I've heard of which does not have twist on filters. Yes I do take responsibility for assuming this GE Profile filter assembly and operation was identical to my last GE Profile. Everything looks identical, including the filters. Why change what wasn't broken. Anyhow, refrigerators with a blue shroud over the area where you insert the filter does require you to twist the filter in. Those with a gray shroud simply line up the filter as indicated on the filter and insert fully. Once fully inserted the filter will easily swing back into the housing. Hope this helps.

This was the best video showing how to change the water filter ever. . His way was a piece of cake. If he had been here I would have given him the biggest hug every. I kid not. The others were making it harder to understand. I would get rid of others ones and just have this one video out there. I am 74 years old I do not want to spend days trying to put the water filter in. My son even tried once and he couldn't even get in. I am reading some of the comments. Lucy is so right, this way the easiest. I try to following paper that came with filter and that was not any help at all. I do not care what paper says I know how to do now. It will be this way.

Update: this video only applies to certain types of filter housings. This video only applies to those with a blue shroud where the filter inserts. For those that have a gray colored shroud where the filter inserts you DO NOT twist. You simply push the filter in. If you've inserted the filter properly it will swing back in order for you to close the housing door. The filer will only fit one way. Following the markings on the filter to ensure it gets pushed in all of the way. Original comment (question): I have the same refrigerator model as seen here. The issue I am having, as seen on the filter you removed @ 0:41, is the little tab on the back keeps breaking off. Is this tab essential to keeping the filter in? Or will the filter remain in place with the larger tabs on the front of the filter? These OEM filters are not cheap. Having to toss one to three each time I replace the filter just because the tabs break off is adding up. I've thrown away five new unused filters because these tiny weak tabs break off while attempting to install. That's seven filters in just one year. Only two actually survived. The tabs on the used filters breaks off while removing as well. I'm beginning to think there is an issue with the mechanism itself. The filters on my old profile refrigerator installed smoothly. These require some force to get in. Additionally the old Profile model filters had more robust heads with threads to easily guide the filter in and out. Thank you. Cheers!

My frig has a gray shroud. I followed directions to remove and insert the filters. But, when I swung the new filter into place I discovered I apparently did not insert the new filter firmly in place. So, I removed the filter but the "seat" (my term) mechanism is locked in place as if there is a filter in place. I can't insert the filter while the seat is locked in place and the mechanism won't swing back out to allow me to attempt to insert the new filter more securely. Ideas on how to get the seat to swing back out?

This should be the version that you “do not twist off”. Where the filter attaches to is grey you do not twist off. If this blue than you’re correct by twisting counter clockwise. You should correct this or people will be breaking refrigerator parts.

As much as I like the spaciousness of this fridge, I’ve had to call a technician to insert my filter twice! I’m short, older with poor vision and I believe this is the most stressful procedure I’ve ever had to try to master! I’m 20 days overdue now. Last time it actually quit dispensing water and ice and makes me angry because it’s only me using the fridge. What a racket! They really should do something about this fridge. As much as I paid for it, this part is poorly designed and way too difficult to attempt every 6 months unless you have a large family!

Note: There are 2 different versions. I'm showing the blue type filter type. Blue shroud = Twist. Gray shroud = Push only.

You need to clarify further as the filter itself is blue. The differences applies to the shroud where the filter is inserted. Blue shroud = twist. Gray shroud = push only.

This is incorrect. This is not the twist version. You can see a little square plastic tab break on the filter itself. This could damage the water filter housing. Swing the filter all the way open and pull out gently, DO NOT TWIST.

There are a blue and gray type. The gray one you do not twist.

Pay close attention to the color. This video shows the black type. This does not work with the grey one. The grey one does not call for the filter to be twisted. Twisting it will break the tabs which makes it useless. A fifty dollar mistake! Read the instructions that come with the filter, not just the instructions from a you tube video.

DO NOT AND I MEAN DO NOT TWIST THE FILTER WHEN TAKING IT OUT. JUST SWING IT OPEN THEN PULL STRAIGHT OUT. IF YOU TWIST IT, IT MAY DAMAGE THE INSERT ON YOUR FRIDGERATOR
