Just found this tonight I love searching AM dial since I was a kid. Always thought I was alone! I’d do it under cover I after midnight . In the 1980s using a standard radio, I used to try to find the end of the Larry King show here in NJ/NY because I think WOR 710 used to cut him off to play John Gambling show (popular here for many decades ). On cold nights I used to find and write down stations. I have a SuperRadio I bought in 1990s in Kmart - serial is 7-2887a. So I can use this to get AM like you hundreds of miles away ? I love how you picked up Rockies games in Denver It’s SO fascinating to hear out of state far aaay commercials for places I’ll probably never see THANK YOU For doing THIS

Recieved this same radio from my dad before his passing, (made in Malaysia) I keep this one on my nightstand with both am & fm antennas running up the wall. This particular radio out performs all my other radios am & fm stations!

Back in the day, C.Crane used to advertise the Superadio III. When I started my collection, since I don’t work on radios myself, I was a bit scared to spend so much money on something that may need work. So I elected to get the III. I found one on eBay. It was in excellent condition and works perfectly. I did make sure to get the G.E. ( as opposed to the problematic R.C.A. badged version). Love it. It does well. The original, and second version do [ appearently] outperform the III, so maybe some day....... 📻🙂

The GE P780 was the original Superadio from the late 50's. Properly serviced and aligned it will equal or better the later Superadios I, 2, or 3.

I found a gem of a 2 at a swap meet for 35dollars! So impressed I’ll use it still today leaving my NOS Superadio in the plastic in the original box.

I have one of these at bedside with a CCrane Twin Coil Ferrite antenna mounted on a piece of plywood zip tied to a paint roller handle frame(roller was removed). I then bought an extended handle, screwed it to the roller frame and removed the cord and topside of a 5 foot standing lamp.then I put the handle stick down inside the lamp stand. Now I have an OMNIDIRECTIONAL adjustable TWC antenna!!!

I think the phrase "they don't make 'em like that anymore" applies here. I found one like new on eBay last year. Kind of pricy, but it's a keeper.

I can get KRVN on 880. The 1050 you are getting is CHUM TSN on 1050 AM from Toronto Ontario, I can get this with a good signal. I was shocked to find out that hispanic station on 1630 is KRND fron Cheyenne, Wyoming! Your GE rocks!! I'm 20 stations close to reach 500 AM stations logged.

I have owned one of these since 19888 and absolutely love it! I use it a lot to tune around the AM band both during the day and at night. I'm near Syracuse NY so I don't pick up anything else on either 570 or 620 since we have both frequencies taken up by stations here. I have picked up 720, 740, 780 and 890 very well at night with very little trouble.

Have never owned a Super II as nice as the one you are demonstrating. Do have a good Super III unit. Both are nice Radios. Prefer the II for the build and looks. Like the Wide/Normal capability on the III. A local strong signal AM station can sound pretty good using the wide setting. Fun Stuff!

I had first, like Todderbert, the Superadio 1 , power switch needs fixed, then got the II that only operates on batteries for $20 on eBay. I like both, will have to get them both repaired someday, enjoying the Superadio II in the meantime. Absolute best DX’er. AM and FM.

I own a #1 in scruffy condition ,gave a great 2 away,and have 2 #3 in boxes. Of all the #1 is the best overall in my opinion! Sounds great and reception is great at all times of the day. Yes it is bulky but very tough. A very good and fair review. They still are affordable and have not gained in value for years. My only regret was I had a cassette version ,mib and sold it.!

Is it safe to say that these first two Superadios (at least the Malaysian ones) are the greatest mw dx transistor radios of all time? I have one SRI, 3 SRIIs and another RCI SRIII(the 3 was just to complete the collection and cannot tie the other’s shoes). I’m just waiting for official word.

The Superadio is considered one of the best on MW, with only the Panasonic RF-2200 besting it.

Thanks for the opinion. I will research and collect. A Panasonic RF 1150 is on the way to me right now.

I've had all three and I regret selling the II as I didn't realize at the time it was the best one. I still have the I. It's a very good DXer on AM. Ok on FM. One thing to be careful is the pully on the dial string breaks easily as it has a plastic tab holding the string. The only fix is a pulley from a parts set. The III had was a different story. It was a pitiful piece of junk. On AM, inbetween stations across the band was a hash noise. The FM tuning was off and it wasn't sensitive at all. I ended up throwing it (literally) it the dumpster. I've heard it was hit or miss. Mine was a BIG miss.

I have 3 SRII radios one is NOS in the box. All 3 are Malaysian. Once bitten NO! Just shy. The same is true with popular CB radios
@raymondward47964 жыл бұрын
The ones made in Malaysia are less prone to cold soldering joints. This is also true with popular CB radios(Malaysia and The Phillippines making the better radios).

I have been watching a few of your reviews. I am an old radio DJ.. who is now out of the business. I would like to try a little AM radio Dxing.. I'm a novice so any suggestions are appreciated. My question.. should I consider including short wave when I shop for a portable radio for this hobby? Or is AM going to be most rewarding? And... do you have any recommendations on a radio for a beginner? Preferably around $50 - $75 or less. Thanks for your help Chuck
@todderbert5 жыл бұрын
You will love having Shortwave. It really is the ultimate DX! I love listening to Voice of Greece and other SW broadcasts that are over 5,000 miles away. What I would recommend is going to be right at the top of your budget. A single side band radio is one to get. You will find yourself wondering what the HAMs are saying or what that Pirate radio station is playing. Check out these two radios, they are similar in every aspect except one uses AA batteries while the other uses an 18650 rechargeable. One screen is white LED lit while the other is Amber. My XHData D-808 review: kzbin.info/www/bejne/p3LPfampnNWfb9k , My Digitech AR-1780 Review: kzbin.info/www/bejne/oGS3kJaemsuZeZo . Both are right at $80 at eBay. My links are provided on the video's description. Have fun!!

Depends on how much space in your radio room. So many variables from one hobbyist to another. My bedroom is my radio room. I live in greater Los Angeles and found my first superadio at an open air swap meet for 35 dollars. This is a rarity for the good condition of the radio. After research I got more serious in persueing more of these SRIIs. Now I have two more-one is w/box NOS. I have also been in relentless persuit of a radio that can compare and compete well with the AM capability to beat it. Separately I scored like a bandit on a Kenwood R5000 for $100. In excellent condition. You’ll be lucky to get one on eBay for $250 or so. Truth be told most units that have all bands are a major disappointment and don’t perform on most of their bands except one or two. But on this radio you’ve come to the right place. Just listen to not just the radio but the giggles when Todd makes a comment about it.

If you're still at it and interested I've always enjoyed finding radios in the wild and on the cheap. Fix them if they need it and try them out for a few weeks.. They're all different. It's fun.

If you have two Superadio II radios, send one of them preferably the one in worse shape than the other to Chuck Rippel for a recap job. Do a comparison between the two radios when you get it back. Also the Malaysian made radios as a whole are a superior product to their Chinese and Hong Kong counterparts.
@thomaspolley49774 жыл бұрын
Finally heard a Kansas City station in there! I really want one of these older radios. I love the sound they produce. It seems you don't need stereo speakers with a small portable radio like that. I would need to use it with a transmitter, I can't stand 90% of the garbage music they play on the radio these days.
