Vivian doing well is expected and he delivered. But what a pleasant surprise that the 3 Oppos held their grounds so well. Impressive improvement from 2015. The attempt to divide them by buttering up to WP & PSP did not work well for sure..lol. I have to say Dr Chee's response on the elite schools is nothing short of brilliant! PSP's refusal to be drown by PMET stats is also amazing.. 😂 how does it matter when 100K educated SG PMETs remain jobless!!! Then 1 foreigner is 1 too many lah..🤪 Good job to all 4 gentlemen! The new 2020 parliament should look like that. We'll all grow well together with such civil and sensible debates . Encouraging indeed! Let's go!

I may be only 15 (yes, I know), but even I can see the complacency our PAP ministers gained over the years they have been in power. They have gradually detached themselves from the harsh reality that is Singapore. We keep building new airport terminals, spend billions of dollars on massive projects to attract foreigners, hold summits that uses taxpayers' money, but neglect the poor in Singapore. Remember PM Lee's 'Mee Siam Mai Hum' incident? We strive to be the best in SEA, mimicking the Swiss way of a high-end lifestyle, but that only goes for the privileged. What about the elderly, those whose family has 8 members but can only afford a one-room rental flat? What about those who make just enough to get buy, not even being able to fathom the lifestyle the rich leads. Almost every facet of life in Singapore is about money. ERP, electronic parking, GST, etc. Scrimping and saving just to be able to afford a nice casual dining meal for yourself. It really is a sad reality. Foreign talents, no matter how qualified, are not helping in the matter. While it is nice we welcome these expats to our country to work, the percentage of them in the workforce mustn't be so high. Cheap hiring costs is such a good lure for companies to hire them, honestly.
@vicomolto1234 жыл бұрын
This kind of mentality is actually the same mentality as the Malays demanding bumiputera treatments in Malaysia when they see themselves threatened by the the influx of chinese and indian immigrants and it certainly goes against one of the cornerstone of Singapore success which is meritocracy. With the influx of foreign talent, there are downside in term of increased competitiveness be it wages or etc but the positive side is it attract more opportunities and options for locals who are deserving of it. Obviously I am not talking about those undeserved who try to demand or rather robbing from those with merit. Honestly, if you are the boss of a company, for same wages, will you hire 100 degree holder or 100 diploma holder? To add on, I cant help but to notice that the above author seem to desire communism where there are no privileged and equal share of wealth for all the people irregardless of merits.

IF u are really 15, then good for you for being so politically aware and not buy into propaganda. See yourself firsthand on the ground what is happening to draw your own conclusions. Keeping an open mind is key. The points u make sounds so mature, I am not sure if u are really 15 . The most important observation u make about Singapore is correct. Everything is about money, how to raise money by taxing the public, be it ERP, GST, COE etc. The number of "foreign talent" will affect you when u get into the job market . It will be a lot more competitive and career advancement opportunities will naturally be lesser or u have to fight really hard for it. Unfortunately u are not old enough to vote but keep being aware of what's happening.

those who come here to work do not want to share what theyve learnt. if youre so unlucky to get a job with a foreign boss or supervisor, or colleagues, they wont teach you since youre a singaporean. theyre probably thinking' youre paid more , youre local, i am paid less, why should i teach you? and if youve in an intereveiw and the person interviewing you tellsyou' oh you are very qualified, no problem, everything is in order. we will contact you' AND the persons next are people of their race and nationality youre sure youre not going to get the job! happened to me. @Sushi Saim It is not a big word but rather this concept of bumiputera or local protectionism is actually existed and existing in many countries and forms, present and past including present America (www.forbes.com/sites/realspin/2017/05/24/immigration-and-isolationism-weve-been-here-before/#4efad40b7f3f). To start off, you are saying the bumiputera only favor the UMNO and royal elites but do you ever heard from some of your Malaysian Chinese or Indian colleagues complaining about how absurd that they cant get to the nation good university despite performing better academically back home? I am sure UMNO and royal elites will have the means to send their kids for better oversea education. Now it is my opinion but the Father of Nation became a PM is a blessing and he did hold election on 1968 after his 5 years term expired from 1963, while i strongly believed for an entity to be efficient, there should be only one leader, let the president be a figure only (i.e. Neighbouring country Malaysia only 1 PM and no president while Indonesia is one president and no PM or US 1 president and no PM). Finally thanks James Bond for highlighting basic needs like foods should be attainable if one willing to take the cheap jobs (again I am not talking about the "nice" food or "ERP", "electronic parking" the first author lamented on). P.S.: I am not sitting on high horse as what you might have think as I don't even have "ERP" or "electronic parking" to worry yet ;)

Very interesting political debate and perspectives provided in the comment box. Vivian's response in the debate is remarkable and gained my respect - given the fact that he's defending against "criticisms" and "accusations" from the other three parties. Jamus was eloquent in his delivery and very intelligent in his choice of words but prompted me to think, why would someone who spent a large portion of his life overseas (note that he was only back in Singapore in 2015) want to be in Singapore politics all of a sudden? I agree that a different voice and view should be introduced into parliament to prevent a herd mentality and ensure proper checks and balance are in place going forward. However, I encourage everyone to take a step back to observe not only the bad, but also the good that was done/created by the government over the past years.

Personally, I think he should work in a part time establishment while on his job hunt. Not working during the interim really shows his character to the interviewer. As long as it is 'cheaper' rather than more costly for businesses to hire foreign talent, it simply makes economic sense for lower cost talent to be hired... The key thing is for Singaporeans of any age, especially if they are older, to retain their careers or remain employable. No one wants to hire a Singaporean who's 45 and above in spite of tax incentives, which hasn't really worked. VB is talking about something else altogether. His definition of 'unemployment' is from IRAS based on manpower in transition during a six month window before being classed as 'self-employed'. SG United hasn't proven how it has protected Singaporean opportunity for good jobs. An 'attachment' (his example) is actually quite 'exploitative'.
@eyeswideshut81104 жыл бұрын
It is NOT always cheaper. The key problem is, it is TOO EASY to get employment passes esp for hirings in MNCs. Unlike Australia which demands applicants to state in writing what knowledge or benefits they are bringing to Australia. Down here is free for all.

DR Vivian, you said the government launched the covid support grant to help Singaporeans and yet you put a household income cap of 10k (before lost of job) as a requirement knowing that pmets are the worse affected. 2 pmets in a household will easily hit this cap. Why do you look at income before lost of job instead of income after lost of job (which means more sense). As a pmet, I was retrenched and yet unable to receive the grant. Sometimes I wonder who came up with these requirements and have they thought it through before making these policies. You mention about keeping reserves for rainy days and yet when it's raining, we do not receive the support.

And when foreign companies build a branch here, they bring over managing directors and some other high ranking officers from other countries. They offer Singaporeans executive roles as well but likely on a lower paygrade. So now do we turn them away because they want to bring foreigners in, or do we accept them since more jobs are being created for locals at the end of the day?

Couldn’t you solve the issue of employers hiring foreign PMETs purely because they are cheaper by using the US H1B market wage testing requirement: “Employers must attest to the Department of Labor that they will pay wages to the H-1B nonimmigrant workers that are at least equal to the actual wage paid by the employer to other workers with similar experience and qualifications for the job in question, or the prevailing wage for the occupation in the area of intended employment - whichever is greater.” Can someone more knowledgeable let me know if this has already been implemented in SG? If not seems like a fix that has precedent overseas

This is a complicated and nuances issues. 1. Stop discrimination of people of bosses that lost their business, mid career job seeker, people with checkered academy careers, aged workers and etc.. 2. Resilience in work and live attitude in resisting changes. Too much bad attitude, create blockage thus decreasing productivity 3. Shorten work hours, most PMET work are spent reaffirming each other than real work anyway
@billhong42164 жыл бұрын
On the one hand, PAP dishes out all kinds of schemes purportedly to help Singaporeans to find jobs. But on the other hand, stubbornly refuse to review our labour law regarding the employment of foreign PMETs and minimum wage. What an irony. Get to the root of the problem and fix it !! Simply put, it's a lack of political will. Period.
@supercritic1004 жыл бұрын
If having foreign PMETs make them so unpopular, why would they continue to welcome them. There must be some sort of underlying benefit right? It's not like their wages increase everytime they hit a new foreign PMET quota anyway, so why not just do away with thousands of them to make the people happy? Ever thought about it?
@loshakhun88324 жыл бұрын
Singapore without foreign PMET will be like Batam and all MNC will just relocate to HK. SG losing its competitiveness is really good news for Shanghai, HK, and other potential hubs.
We are not talking about jobs that needed you. We are saying many TALENTED SINGAPOREAN can do PMETs. Are you working as PMETs? What job you are in? I wanna work and complete with you! See who can do much better job with profit results. I got confident once I wanna resign. Your boss sure ask me to stay. I am singaporean. I work with passion, commitment, responsible to company's interests. Now I am driving grab. 8am till 9.30pm. Can you drive such long hours? If you are capable and got the right to criticize DR CHEE. you would be commenting in KZbin. You will be sitting in parliament with them. If you really are capable. Your government sure would not let you come to Singapore. Stop thinking that singapore will fall without you. Respect and be humble my friend.

Not sure if you've seen the full video before commenting, all oppositions were given 1.5mins of air time to summarise their proposal whilst Dr. Balakrishnan was given 4.5mins to refute them. While i agree the representative from PSP spent most of his time criticising the PAP, Dr Lim of WP and Dr Chee of SDP gave a clear and articulate SUMMARY of their proposal. Dr Balakrishnan still did not address the foreign workers problem, in fact he totally dodged the question, which in fact is what most singaporeans are angry about.

1) HR managers must be local Singaporean/ PR capable to articulate HR strategy and not HR administrators only 2) headhunters cannot keep giving excuses, but work harder sourcing local to keep their employment agency status - headhunters who only cream off non locals will not get EP approvals for their candidates. 3) MOM must have a department analysing and actively rejecting work passes and field local with similar skills to be interviewed and not have "passive" approaches with careers.sg etc which I do not believe is working - the cosmetic system can be gamed. 4) Singaporeans must reskill, be articulate and rise up to outperform their counterparts - and cast away that "work to time, work to rule, work to scope" reputation we are stuck with. Earn our place in the workforce - it is not an entitlement. I support Singapore having a critical mass of FW / population which is necessary for to keep Singapore's competitiveness but we need to address this festering issue of unfettered approvals of FW work passes which has been festering for 10 years but never addressed beyond the cosmetic which somewhat was not very effective so Lim Tean voted in could help MOM - hint hint

Singapore must move on from a tourist hub for travellers and tax haven for foreign offshore investments. Singapore must reform its financial tax shelter for foreign entities doing trade and business in Singapore.Pioneer status for foreign corporations to avoid paying capital gains tax on personal assets be removed and those in favour of foreign resident to shelter their wealth in Singapore. Singapore has been accused of being a foreign tax haven and shelter for foreign corporation based offshore for tax purposes.

Singapore don’t seems to have strong opposition leader. It’s obvious in this video. Opposition side need more talent, a strong leader to bring forward all parties and consolidate into one, strong opposition party like what they did in Malaysia in the last GE there. Or else small, fragmented opposition parties warlord-like strategy will have no treat to PAP.
