Gearing is indeed everything. I met a guy with an LS swapped miata at the local 1/8th mile who had a cd009. He complained about one of the shifts being too long and said he was gonna switch to a T56 magnum to fix that, as well as to have easier rebuilds (it was an N/A 6.0 that he used nitrous on, less than a 200 shot, and only for roll racing, how often does he really have to rebuild a 1000whp capable transmission?). Anyway, I went home that night because I had a hunch, and I was indeed correct. After sitting down and doing the math, the T56 magnum didn't have any closer shifts than the cd009, it just had a second overdrive and all the ratios were numerically lower (effectively longer), which would simply require him to have a numerically higher (effectively shorter) rear end ratio. And we all know that requires a smaller pinion gear, which will then be less efficient and receive more stress. Haven't met him since (the track closed for the season shortly after and I haven't gone back since it reopened, yet), but I almost want to make a little spreadsheet to show him if I see him again. I don't think he'll gain anything by switching transmissions, and furthermore, after discovering what I did I decided that double-overdrive transmissions in general were stupid. Long live the cd009, I guess.

Sounds like he needs a 250hp shot to me! 😂

@@newguysgarage6802 For real, lol. But my main point is that the existing cd009, even with something that seems long like 3.23:1, would serve him better as far as shift spacing to keep him in the powerband than even the direct T56 equivalent of 4.10:1.

@@Drunken_Hamster definitely, and like you said he does it from a roll which is extremely easy on the transmission compared to a dig. 🙂

here's the road racers equivalent Mark Donohue; "If you can leave two black stripes from the exit of one corner to the braking zone of the next, you have enough horsepower." So are you planning to go to a taller tire now ?

Is redline determined by maximum HP or when the valve starts floating?
@newguysgarage6802 Жыл бұрын
Piston speed is a big factor lol And ya HP too, really depends on what your power curve looks like.
@Drunken_Hamster10 ай бұрын
Piston speed and rod ratio. Valve float isn't nearly as much of a problem nowadays as it was 40+ years ago.
