The reason it makes more torque is because the air is comeing off a sharp edge which makes it more turbulent. Which in turn hurts air flow. And your engine doesnt want anymore air on the top end because you made the same peak power. Bigger heads, bigger cam and more rpm you wouldnt think its so amazing. This works in YOUR application.

There's a reason for this, sir... I'll 100% guarantee it makes MORE power the "right" way, on my victor jr... ...or also on THAT manifold with the divider wall cut down. As an engine builder of 30+ years; Not really too "hard to believe", imho...

It serves no purpose for performance bud they act basically the same if you put a timing light on your ignition timing at say 4 grand 3500 rpm depending on engine build your mechanical overrides the vacuum on snap power then you don't know unless you dyno and your initial timing all timing whether mechanical, vacuum, electrical has delay this is why you gotta watch for predetination to loose power or worse your not thinking about the curve and delay of everything working in a race motor you want all advance all the time ported or vacuum are same except at idle period and neither are for performance they for emissions, fuel economy ect unless you get on dyno and if you do your looking for power so you want a hot hot ignition with mechanical set for your motor and tweak distributor untill dyno says what you want hell gapping plugs all that comes into play the air, fuel fire in sync to make her bring the power on the power stroke at btdc because of delay in it all nothing is perfect or instant

There are so many variables, what kind of paint, how thick the coat or coats of paint used, etc. Probably what was going on back then is they painted it, cut it off were it stopped burning, made some power over not having an extention at all, and said "good enough" hence story. The problem is, obviously, that's not optimal. Some exstention is usally better than none but it's still not right.

5 and 7 and 4 and 8 don't fire basically the same time, they are 90 degrees apart. Every cylinder fires 90 degrees apart. The issue is 5-7, 4-8 are on the same bank 90 degrees appart (this creates your V8 "burble" sound"). 1-3, 6-2 are are on the same bank but 270 degrees appart, which is 3 times the amount of time between pulses. To moslty mitigate this you'd need "180 degree headers" which take primary tubes from each side and cross them over into opposing collectors which somewhat evens out the exhaust pulses making the engine sound more like a flatplane "european v8". I say "somewhat" becuase it's often very difficult to get all these pipes the same length so you often still end up with a little unevenness resulting in something that sounds inbetween an "american" and "european" v8.

I've always been fascinated with exhaust design, so I'm thoroughly enjoying your videos. 🙂 I noticed how the single exhaust produced more torque at lower rpms. That is a significant piece of information. I recently switched from a 4 into one header to a Tri Y header on my 4 cylinder Tacoma. Having three Y merge points instead of just one greatly increased the low rpm torque. I had no idea just a header change could make so much difference, because the 4 into 1 was already a lot better than the stock exhaust manifold.
