Gear selector fault diagnosis and fix E90 E91 E92 E93 E9X

Thanks for the video and the useful content. I have an e92/2010 where I started to get a transmission fault on the dash after I have changed the gear cooler and the gear oil. The car did not generate any codes earlier, but after I have done the above maintenance, I started to get the ugly transmission fault. The fault only comes after I drive the car (after 20 or 30 mins) not sure what could be the relation but it seems that when the car is warm enough this fault comes in. After the fault is on the dash, the car starts to have poor transmission, error in selection (be in N while the selector is in D, etc.) I got it inspected by a mechanic (who did the oil change) but he was not able to fix it (he suggested to change the whole gear box, which I am not convinced to do!) It is notable that when the car is parked, cold, it starts with out any issue and without the transmission fault. The fault comes after driving the car for 30+ mins. I am puzzled and not sure what to do. Any suggestions?

Hi most dont know how to top up the oil correctly. You need to make sure around 7 litres go in. Most top it up as per normal until the oil starts to come out. It could also be that the clutch packs are worn out and in that case you would need to have it refurbed so the mechanic could be right.

@@houseofcars6998 in the latter case, would the whole gear box be changed or it is a type of fix the packs can have? Thanks for the swift response - appreciated

@@bassilmohammad4085 you can have just the packs done but it can be over £2K. Replacement gbox should be cheaper but no guarantee it’ll work long. I would suggest draining the oil first and then measuring 7 litres (from the gbox being totally empty) and make sure it takes all of that. You might have to tilt the car forwards to give it enough space to go in.

@@houseofcars6998 it worked, car goes into park now! but still wont engage in sport mode.. i think my wire for sport mode might be cut

@@toastydan0511 thats great you got half of it sorted. Here i was thinking will this video be worth posting 😜 Yeah so if u take off the gear surround theres a wire that gets stretched when you go to sport mode and that breaks over time. Just use a block connector to wire it back up.

Im having an issue with my 2008 BMW 328i. The shifter moves into Reverse, Neutral, and Drive, but the car will not move. The car is not going into gear. Any suggestions on what is wrong??

@@Alvo901 Confirm the cable from the gearstick down to gearbox is moving as should. I’m guessing its the selector switch. Shouldnt be anything big if its as simple as you’d described

@@JeanStudiosHD not yet, but doing some research I found there’s a “mechanic valve” inside the mechatronic body of the transmission right above the transmission oil pan, that part is made of plastic and it’s apparently very prompt to breaking, I haven’t had the time to inspect mine, if this helps you let me know too please! @@axelgarcia9690 i fixed my issue i ordered a new pan thinking it was the fluid or possibly a solenoid inside the mechntorics unit so i switched all that out but the problem i had was that my shifter was stuck in park but i bypassed it with the shifter lock switch and after the fluid change and solenoids my car would go into drive and reverse but i still had the problem with the shifter being stuck in park so what i did was with the car in the on position without the engine running i detached some cables in the shifter unit ( just pry out the plastic plate that covers it) and reattached them put the car in N and as soon as i turned the car on put it in D gave it throttle and switched it to DS (sports mode) and it took the gear i drove the car a bit turned it off turned it back on and i was no longer stuck in park it’s been running well since

I have a tuned 335 i felt a boom come from Behind me now car will roll in park and I have no pedal response at all when I start and it makes a crazy rattling noise. Never had this happen to me on this chassis so I am lost any help or suggestions?

@@marleywhite8039 hey buddy you got a video? Probably need a bit more detail. When you rev the counter rpm moves but car doesnt go anywhere? rattling noise where engine meets gearbox? If so then sounds like a new box…

Hi, would u perhaps know why my car is electronically in ‘D3’ while parked without the engine running. After a short ride couldnt get it running again and found out the transmission tells the computer its in Drive 3rd gear. On the dash or transmission poke it works fine and displays the right situation. Also while in N it’s possible to push the car. I’ve almost tried everything and read every forum, called almost every specialist in my country but nobody seems to know the problem… thanks in advance!

Hi thats very odd. Normally the it would show a fault if the gears on the display are different to what is selected. I think for this you need a real gearbox specialist. Search a guy on KZbin called Gary Ferraro. Or there are some transmission specialists in the UK i can share there numbers for you

Have you checked this cable? Disconnect the selector here from the gearbox and change gears yourself. See if it goes correctly into gear without the gearstick

I have an issue , all of a sudden my car wont reverse but other gears are working fine!

Maybe an issue with the wiring at the gearstick if its just happened randomly. If it’s over time then more likely to be towards the gearbox internals. Can you give more details?

@@houseofcars6998 thanks for your reply! I haven’t actually looked at the wiring at the gearstick i instantly tought about an issue with the gear selector because it just happened all of a sudden . I’ll have to look into the wirring of the gear stick and tel you how it goes.

@@houseofcars6998 thanks for your reply, I actually just went for the gearbox check and tadaa the selector valve was broken, i just ordered one online that is meant to be delivered in like 10 days ( I live in the DRC) thanks to you and the video for helping guide through the removal of the broken piece , cant wait to put it back, cheers!
