I found that Roland S1 is a great thing and can replace everything in this video. It works as a class compient audio interface. It connects with usb c, it has a headphones jack, it passes the ipad sound to the output without delays. With AUM it is possible to sync it to the other virtual instruments. Also it sounds amazing, it has a sequencer built in, it works as a MiDi keyboard. And it costs comparable money.

I’ve heard of people having trouble when connecting the Roland S1 as a midi controller. Can you confirm that it can be used as a controller like say, Logic Pro? How did you go about setting up to make it work? Can you map drum sounds to the keys? I would like to know before buying as I am interested in this as a more portable set up.

It's amazing to me that nobody has made a small controller with keys and pads that is also an audio interface. I am aware that IK Multimedia has two, but they're not small and they're pretty old by tech standards. Maschine MK3 has an interface but is big and only has pads AND is overkill for mobile musicians. If someone built something small with keys, pads, audio interface (with a combo 1/4" XLR input) and a headphone output for iPads, tablets, and even laptops, they'd solve so many issues at once and they'd be the only game in town.

I imagine more of docked and undocked scenarios - lean on the go setup vs a home studio built around iPad
@HotStrangeАй бұрын
Why not use a small interface then? I’ve been using the iPad for many years and it’s pretty easy. I’ve ran my entire studio into my iPad before, many times.
@DrrolfskiАй бұрын
@@HotStrange Using an audio interface is already one extra device. By that point, you need extra juice from a powerbank so that's 2 devices connected and you haven't even achieved shit. Now you can finally hook up that controller, instrument, etc, also let's not forget your headphones or minispeakers,, and guess what? By now, your mobile setup isn't really all that mobile anymore. More of a clumsy mess of awkwardly connected devices. That' is most of the time too much of a hassle to set up on the go and completely overshoots the point of mobile music making in the first place.
@HotStrangeАй бұрын

@@HotStrange Calm down, nobody is getting worked up here. In fact, the "two device rule" is not even mine, altrhough I had the same experiences. The guy who came up with this is a KZbinr (Jakob Haq) who has dedicated his whole life to mobile music making. So this is not some random idea from a loner in the comment section. Tons of people have run in these same limitations with mobile music making. If you're not one of them, well then all the best to you. I've learned the hard way to stick to a minimum of devices if I actually want to enjoy myself making mobile music (that's actually why I use the Ableton Move and MPC Live 2 btw).

Other things to consider - come devices have Bluetooth midi. Latency for _midi_ is OK wirelessly over Bluetooth, unlike Audio. Roland Jupiter XM, TE OP-Z, OP-1 Field and some other products, even the cheap Wavy Industries MonKey, or the CarryOn 49 folding keyboard, have Bluetooth midi. Annoyingly Korg's new pocket folding (nanoKey?) controller does not have battery power or BLE, so it's as useless as a full size keyboard in this regard.

I'm looking at making my first iPad purchase for music production (as a complete newbie but with a performance background) and am debating whether to get the new Mini 7 (with only 128gb) versus the Mini 6 with 256. I have an opportunity to purchase either one used at similar price points, with the 7 also coming with the Pro Pencil. Which do you think makes the most sense? I'm worried about the smaller amount of GB in the newer model but I'm also small potatoes and don't know how much I really need! Thanks so much.
@TaetroАй бұрын
What takes up most of my memory is video + media on my ipad (use it for editing etc). If you're planning just to use it for music files, you can probably get away with the 128gb. The pencil is really a nice add. The iPad in this video is the Mini 6, but I just traded it in for the 7 because the battery started failing.
@mothermeadowАй бұрын
@@Taetro I appreciate the feedback! It mostly would be for music at this point and also, potentially, some light dabbling with Procreate. I guess if I did need to upgrade from the 128GB model down the line to one with more storage, I'd already have the pencil :-). Is the battery failure a common issue? I'm sorry that happened to you, even though it did provide a good excuse to get a new iPad!
@TaetroАй бұрын
I’m not sure if it’s a common issue, I had the iPad a while and had just upgraded iOS so I figured it was either age or new features were draining the old chip. You’re right…the exact excuse I needed to buy a new one 😂

Thanks for the video. Do you recommend any particular software for recording on the iPad? Say, you will mostly use guitar, hardware keyboards and synths and just want an iPad DAW to record and light mixing.
@johnsuggs78282 ай бұрын
download a few of them and try them out. They all have some kind of trial period. Picking a DAW is truly a matter of personal preference. I used to swear by Ableton.... I'm slowly moving away from it. Not that there's anything wrong with it, I'm just to get the same from other DAWs for much cheaper. Ableton's top of the line package is 700+ Presonus Studio one was 149 for the full package as an upgrade....from any version. Even the free version. So I got Studio One Pro 7 for 149. Can't beat that. You'll even find yourself using specific DAWs for certain kinds of music if you have more than one.

Too many devices and cables to use what is supposed to be a portable and scaled down solution; it loses all intentionality. I don't have an iPad but if I did I would prefer to use it with just a headset (preferably low latency bluetooth) and my bare hands.

There is no Bluetooth with latency low enough for real time playing. No need to use all the peripherals all at once and also don’t forget, for some all they have is an iPad and it’s their main machine. @@Taetro My experience tells me that if I have to use the tablet (I have an Android 11" tablet) on top of the desktop, it's preferable to connect the PC and start Ableton. I consider myself a person who doesn't deal very well with redundancy. The original idea of a tablet is that you can lie everywhere with it. If you have to surround yourself with more devices, at least for me, you lose what a tablet offers best, which is portability and simplicity. And as for the bluetooth audio latency, it's getting closer and closer to being usable for real time. I'm still looking forward to that day :), in the meantime we can get by with a usb-c headphones, but this is a single cable, which is bearable for me.
