Old Groove Cutter Restoration | Groove Saw [Hitachi GA21]

This is a groove saw that cuts grooves with a router blade. It works just like a circular saw in cutting straight groove. It is hitachi GA21 groove cutter that I got it from the recycle shop.
In this videos I recorded it step by step the process of restoration.

@@gear_show once you remove a bearing, replace it. Good or bad. Do not pull a bearing into place with the centre when it is going to be held in place by the outer race. These bearings are designed for going round, not side to side.

@@forevercomputing and he could,d have used rust remover for the rusty parts too and coated all screws in hot oil after he blow torched them whitch did not happen unfortunately

haha no it wouldnt, it wouldnt even kick back. There isnt enough blade in the wood for it to kick, not to mention the diameter is too small, nor does the blade have a flat surface for wood to jam on..... etc etc

Great job. The only mistake I saw is that it looks like you didn't remove the paint around the ground connector screw. For a good grounding connection you shouldn't rely on just the screw thread for connection. The ground connector ring should press against the bare metal of the chassis.

That's a good point, also light drop of oil on each thread and cross bar as they go in really helps maintain them for the future and keep them nice and smooth.

That doesn't matter in this instance since the green wire goes nowhere in the plug... scary but true! The plug should really be replaced until this was purely a display item.

There's a lesson for us all in these videos . We throw far too much away just because it's new doesn't mean it's better .now we have tools that are far too complicated . someone is always trying to reinvent the hammer .it's a weight on a stick

Portable Appliance Testing - basically checking the electrical safety of any portable appliance. This one would fail a PAT test straight away because the earth isn't connected to anything in the plug.

Awesome work! Please just be careful working with the wire wheel in the drill press with gloves on. (no gloves and you risk getting an abrasion, with gloves you risk the glove wrapping round the chuck while your hand is still inside of it)

Consider using an ultrasonic cleaner to clean the bearings if you don't want to replace them with new ones. Also if you buy a big one you can use it to clean/degrease/derust/paint strip the entire tool you are working on

Don't know if you know this tip, but you can take an extra deep well socket you may have no use for, cut a slit down the top-center about an inch and you have a socket that easily handles those tricky wing nuts. 😉

I try not to use sandpaper or stones on commutator bars unless I have to. I will spin the rotor with a hand drill and polish the commutator bars with cup leathers.

Nice refurbishing job. But I have to wonder, other then a dado cut, what is it good for. Unless you can get different shaped blades, I don't see this being much useful for anything else.

Not with that blade I'm sure. The ones I've seen also have rollers on the base because they're often used on fairly rough walls. This blade definitely looks like it's designed for wood rather than for masonry.
