Paul, It was great to see one of these oldies make an appearance. My dad used to talk about these 3 speed OD units from his days as a teenager and budding mechanic; skills that are evaporating into history it seems. Interesting teardown visuals on what sitting/condensation/water can do to these old cast iron transmissions. I saw your comment on the customer in a hurry so there was no time for a rebuild video...real shame, won't get to see too many more of these hen's teeth. Thanks for your time sir!

Paul thanks for dissecting the old O/D tranny. To bad that it can't be replaced by a nice little 5 speed, but that torque tube would be a problem. There were a couple of those Healy's around back in the day but were all show and no go. as they were owned only by the rich. I built a 49 Ford, with a 265 Chevy engine with that O/D tranny behind it. The Ford originally had a six with O/D so it had like a 4:11 rear so it had little go, and when it was in O/D could coast for "miles". It's must be over 60 years since I sold it, no I don't miss it, as there were many more projects after that.

GREAT job ! It's good to know that there are very knowledgeable industry leaders that have a command on these transmissions. A friend gave me a three speed overdrive with a GM stamp on it that I installed in my 56 Chevy pickup in 1984, which I still own. It was in his 72 Chevy former "hippy van" with a Corvette engine. ( I did the exhaust system on the van one day and found a metal box welded to the frame hidden with access to the inside. It was a drug running van. " Carry on as you "rebuild" AMERICAN history! My neighbor was a big hot rod builder back in the 60s and 70s and he was good people. and when he found out I was into cars he brought me into his shop and showed me the kind of stuff I'd only seen in magazines. He was rebuilding an original 426 hemi out of his buddies Road Runner that his step son had damaged by playing with fireworks in the garage as you do. But he had a Gm pattern 2wd 3 speed with OD that he gave me in exchange for cutting his grass all that summer and I'm pretty sure he made out on that deal lol. But he helped me put it in my 89 camaro😮, yeah its a frankencar. Over time I've automated the 12v solenoid with some cheapy electronics but it works fantastically, it's older than me and the car it's in and it's a conversation piece. If you pulled the handle out you could go into overdrive if you let off on the gas.. Seems I recall you could split 2nd and third gear so you could drive the car as if you had a 5 speed..

Anyway ,thank you for the stickers Brother. Dru... I installed a Borg Warner overdrive transmission from a 1958 Chevy into my 1950 Chevy with some modifications required for it to fit and have been driving with it for 15,000 miles and 6 years now. I have since grenaded the planetary gears twice due to low oil level in the transmission. I had an internal leak between the transmission and rear axle torque tube and thus all the transmission oil would get pumped into the rear end within a thousand miles. I think the planetary gears ride directly on a steel pin with no needle bearings or brass bushings in between to reduce friction. On top of that, the planetary gears sit way above the oil bath in a restricted space which limits the likelihood of oil reaching them, especially at low oil levels. I have since fixed the major leak and I will continue to use it, but I'm considering adding a supplementary oil pump which will be driven off the speedometer gear to spray gear lube directly on the planetary gears. There are times which I think making a run of planetary gear assemblies might be worth the expense if only to provide a service to the folks running these transmissions.

The OD lockout is engaged in reverse because otherwise the car wouldn't move, gotta bypass the sprag (overrun clutch) to pull in reverse. You can also bypass the sprag in forward gears to allow engine braking below 28mph, because when the OD is enabled but not engaged the trans will freewheel on deceleration (thanks to the sprag)

The unit used in the 70s was a Laycock-DeNormanville OD. It's the same as used in 70s Volvo and MG cars, amongst others. It had an electric solenoid, but it was just a valve that controlled the flow from a hydraulic pump that actually activated the OD unit. There was no lock-out cable, it wasn't needed (it had no free-wheel clutch either). The last Borg-Warner OD units were made around 70-71 and last used by Ford in some trucks, IIRC. The Borg-Warner has a large electric solenoid on the side that actually activates the OD. The solenoid is about the size of a car HVAC blower motor, not a little one like the Laycock-DeNormanville unit. FYI Gear Vendors got their start by buying up excess L-D OD units from AMC when they stopped using them in the mid 70s and converting them to divorced units. They later got rights to manufacture and built a heavier duty version which they still sell.
