Your videos gave me much confidence in my refreshing of a very valued customer's M21 (my First Muncie). Transmissions are not a common thing I overhaul as an independent auto mechanic. I really appreciate your videos and contributions to the industry. You are truly a master of your trade. Thank you,

Like a lot of people I do not thank those who help me the most. I received my new Hurst shifter , laid everything out just as Paul did and went to work. My transmission was already in the car so it was a little different than in the video, but not much. I even took my laptop to the garage with me. You see, I am not much of a mechanic, but I installed the shifter in one day and never had to take anything off to adjust the linkage, it went on right the first time. Now my little 64 Nova two door hardtop is even more fun to drive and I am off to bigger projects. It always helps that I have had this car since 1967, never gets old, Thanks again Paul, doubt that I would have done it without you.

WOW! Just WOW! What a piece of information that is! Explained to me like I'm a six year old, just the way I need it to be. This is a clinic on how to explain complex mechanisms in digestible pieces so that dummies like me can understand and use the information. That was more enjoyable to watch than any silly Marvel movie. My goodness, Paul, you are a great man! Thank you so much, I think I can figure out what is keeping my muncie from shifting into neutral and 1 through 4. Right now all she has is reverse. At least I have a starting place now and an idea what I'm looking at. Best Video on youtube!

Thank you for the video! My 1968 Camaro was "hanging up" when trying to shift from 2nd to 3rd gear. After watching, I had a much better understanding of how the entire mechanism worked. My only regret is not buying the steel bushings, as I needed to fix it within a certain timeframe. Thanks!

I'm an authorized Autogear reseller. So I build my own M22 type transmissions with their components and have had some design input into them as well. I DO NOT like the gear vendors system. The problem is I do not think the extension housing adapter has good alignment with the transmission and overdrive unit. Its very long and makes for a very short driveshaft and clearance issues. Your money is better spent on a Tremec TKO 600 5 speed.

I really appreciate you sharing your knowledge. I used this to adjust the Hurst on my T101A after it locked up on me in 2nd gear. Unfortunately, it doesn't seem like the adjustments made any difference as it locked up seriously bad last week pulling into pit lane and trying to downshift into first. I wish you had a rebuild video for this transmission. I can't find any from professionals. Everyone (online) says these transmission are dirt simple but no one really has step by step instructions for tear down; especially when the shafts are completely bound up. It's in 1st and 3rd at the same time.
@GearBoxVideo Жыл бұрын
If its in 1st and 3rd at the same time the interlocks in the cover are not working. Has nothing to do with the shifter . So if you can move the levers without the shifter attached in 1st and 3rd ..its internal

I wish I'd have seen this in 1971 when I bought a T-10 and Hurst shifter from a friend to put in my 57 chevy, which had a 3 speed column shifter. I don't remember now doing any of that so maybe the linkage was already on the gear box and did not need any adjusting. I installed it in the dark with just a flashlight and the front of the car on jackstands. No transmission jack! I really screwed up the hump because being spacially challenged I started cutting holes several inches in front of the seat. Ends up they come up just under the seat on the 57. The shifter arm has a dog leg just for the chevy with a bench seat. It ran fine and had no problems. These were all supposed to be 283s but when I needed some parts for the engine it turned out to be a 265. Crap motor.
@GearBoxVideo11 жыл бұрын
The stop motion is the same for 1-2 and 3-4. So you only need to adjust it on the 3-4. I choose 3-4 because you don't have to pull the shifter left. The 3-4 gate is the normal position the shifter sits in so it is easier to work with. The same bolts are used for both 1-2 and 3-4.... look at the shifter there are only two bolts.

I sell a lot of steel bushing kits. I really have not had any complaints. The problem with the plastic bushings is that they are deteriorating fairly quickly and as a result causing poor shift feel.

I'm watching this video 5 years after you uploaded it. Great info (and I do not own an American Muscle car (aka "Yank Tank") and probably never will. But here in New Zealand (Pacific Islands 1,000 miles off the coast of Australia) as a child, when my older brother and his friends had various "boy racer" sorta cars in the 1970's, these were known commonly here as an "Impala Shift". (Only years later since the internet came along did I hear them called "Hurst" or "Vertigate" shifters). I always wanted this setup on one of my cars. American cars are still ultra-rare here (partly because you silly guys keep mounting your steering wheels on the wrong side of the car) so most cars here were British, and then, since the 1980's, Japanese. The few American cars which come here nowadays are almost all automatics. One QUESTION though. Why would these even have become known colloquially as an "Impala Shift" ? Did the Chevvy Impala ever come out with them as standard anyways ? Great video, I have seen some of your other rebuild videos and they make it very clear. I have rebuilt an old 4 speed British gearbox before, your videos make all the things clear. Thanks
@jimpeeden20042 жыл бұрын
Thanks, Paul, for a very thorough setup and adjustment process. I swapped an LS6 in my '72 Zee around 79 and replaced the old shifter with a comp plus (it had a steel alignment rod) it was a daily driver for me, many miles! I had a few occasions where the spring rod retainers at the shift fork lever would "disappear" and leave me in 3rd or 4th gear. After walking the shoulder, I would find a nail, and once another spring retainer, then I would crawl underneath and get the muncie back shifting. So I decided to add ground washers and cotter pins, and I never had this problem again, they seemed to always disappear on a busy highway in the summer and I hated for my car and I to be seen "broke down" for something this simple, have you heard of any problems with retaining shift rods this way? I'll be on Super661 when I start disassembling...

Great informative video Paul, you touched on it being possible for a Hurst to get stuck in forward and reverse. This is exactly what easily happens to me going from reverse to 1st, with my newly rebuilt and installed M22 on the 74 Corvette. What do I need to adjust to stop this. The installer claims to of used the key for alignment but it also seems to shift and get into gear harder then the Saginaw it replaced. Everything with exception to the Hurst Shifter was replaced with new. Thanks-Loren
@GearBoxVideo9 жыл бұрын
You can have a perfectly aligned shifter but if the rods are rubbing together it can cause hard shifting. Usually it is the 1-2 rod rubbing against the reverse rod that causes this issue.

Thanks Paul! I think it is so cool of you to share your trade expertise! I have 500 miles on my full restoration '68 Camaro and when I let off the pedal in second gear the transmission pops out of gear. So, I am going to readjust the linkage and stops. Question: can this be done efficiently with the transmission in the car?
@GearBoxVideo8 ай бұрын
Falling out of gear is not going to be fixed by a linkage adjustment. A linkage can only be adjusted for a good neutral position. Unless your shifter is a Hurst shifter and has stops It is possible that they may be in too far but other than that it's usually inside the transmission
@VideoMyLifeLLC8 ай бұрын

This is a problem with dual disc clutches in general. Unless the floaters are working properly, they will cause poor release, especially the ones from Mcleod

I finally put an ajustable pushrod and took ALL the play out of the clutch and now it works, I also seen they had the rods to the shifter hanging down instead of being upward like the ones on your vid now the shifter works you take off without spinning the tires.

Glad I found your page. How about rebuilding a vintage competition plus shifter unit?
