Yes. Always take care of your tools. Watching this, I realized my tap and die set is now 40 years old. My parents gave it to me for Christmas when I was 18.

Love this setup, will you rebuild my Hurst shifter on a Top loader installed in a 1966 Mustang. I particularly like your rods design.

I recall the Hurst Super Shifter was spring loaded. The Comp Plus was not. The Super Shifter shift arms were wider, and the mostly straight-line rods had reinforcement sleeves welded on. Super Shifters sat up very high to allow the rods to be straighter. You had to cut a big hole in the floor for clearance. Later on, they sold the Street Super Shifter which was spring loaded, had the good arms, but otherwise was similar to the Comp Plus. Your aluminum shift arms look wonderful but are much too soft. They'll strip right out. Even the original hardened steel arms get worn from racing, causing gear clash and lockup between 2 gears. I wonder if there will be trouble with your soft aluminum shift rods also. Hurst did make a very expensive NASCAR shifter with Heim joints and steel rods. I liked the Mr. Gasket shifter because you could set it up for super short throws out of the box. It was common to already have a butchered floor in an old muscle car anyway, back in the day...haha

What a great video! I am in the middle of trying to get my Mr. Gasket Vertical Gate shifter to work on my Chevelle. The bushing and lever arm slot are worn out and it keeps popping out of 4th. Finding a new lever arm and larger Mr. Gasket bushing are all but impossible... Thanks for posting this!

Seany, that was beautiful to watch! You got a subscribe from me. Not sure how many videos you have, but I'm gunna start watching. I really, really, really like that straight shifter rod set up you make. The next time someone asks me what I mean when I say "sweet" I'm gunna direct them to this video right here. Also...it's nice to hear what you had to say about the super t-10. I was initially disappointed when I found out my project had one. I was all geared up (see what I did there? These jokes write themselves boys, pay attention) for a muncie. Now I don't know nothing about nothing when it comes to automocars but the more I learn from fellas like you, looks like the super t-10 is a bit of alright. Certainly easier to rebuild than the muncie, looks like. Before I go, I just gotta say, I hope some of your videos show some of those sweet rides you were talkin' 'bout. 'Cause I wouldn't mind a bit to put my eyeballs on them and goggle for a bit.

@@mountainsgarage Listen, I hate to be a pest, but you mentioned a scattershield. Now, I had never heard of one of those until three days ago, but I did some looking, and like you said, it's nice to keep your feet. I had no idea a clutch or flywheel could do what they do. Anyway, my 75 vette wants one of these things, do you have a recommendation of what and who to buy from?

@@kittypigeonclueless5566 Lots of Chevy ones around used, I buy them when I find them for $200 or less. They sell new for $4-500, but cheaper than surgery!

Can you provide the dimensions for the rods you made, and the source for the end links? Or, do you make and sell them for specific applications? By the way, I love this video. I must have watched it 5 or 6 times already to see if I could make them myself.
@mountainsgarage
@mountainsgarage 4 жыл бұрын
The rod material is 5/8 aluminum from amazon or ebay. The rod ends are 3/8-24 left and right hand. If you search for 4 link they come cheaper in sets of eight on either site. Same with the 1/2” flat bar for the bracket. I started buying old shifters and selling them after last winter, I have a pile of them to do again. Thanks for watching!

I can measure the length if you tell me your shifter style. For a Muncie or T10 anyway.

@@mountainsgarage Well, I'm putting in a new Autogear/Muncie M22 (with wide ratio gears) in a '68 Camaro. I have a used Hurst Competition Plus shifter and handle from my '69 Camaro. I just prefer the idea of straight rods to the factory bent rods. Thanks for the details.
@gregwarner1225

@@mountainsgarage OK, so I purchased and received the rod material and the rod ends. Do you have the lengths you used for the 1-2, 3-4 and R rods? I have measured 12.5", 16.5" and 8" center to center, respectively, on an M-20 with the original rods in place and in neutral. Will the lengths be any different on my Autogear/M22? I think it is similar to a Super T10 since it only has 3 mounting bolts for the shifter bracket. And, do you recommend against using the original shifter levers? Lastly, was it necessary to make your own shifter mounting bracket, or did you do it just because you wanted to?

I used to have a Hurst V-Gate in my 65 Mustang Coupe street car (shoe-horned Cleveland and top loader) - I had some of the funnest times with that car. I cant believe those sifters are so pricey now. What size rod-ends are you using?
