Interesting bits of information that might be helpful--- I was looking through my old Chevrolet Service News issues and the Sept-Oct 1967 publication states that the Muncie's "slinger on the clutch gear bearing is to prevent chips from entering the bearing and causing a subsequent failure." Ostensibly- more of a bearing debris shield, though they also refer to it as an " oil slinger." They also state that the use of the slinger "requires slight changes in the clutch gear" ie: machined down to provide additional dimension to put it in. They state the "gear and slinger will service past models" and "the slinger must not be removed when (this new setup is) used with past models" Bottom line-you need to assure some clearance for the input welding to the output shaft -as well as having too much clearance spacing. Same service bulletin also states the new 1968 3 and 4 speed transmissions models use the plastic speedometer drive gear with the clip.
@GearBoxVideo6 жыл бұрын
Slingers were used from 65 and up. No changes were ever required to compensate for the .030" movement in. No gears were ever machined. I only recommend you NOT add one to a used gearset that never had one since the maindrive section could make gear noise. There was never a clearance issue with the inside of the input welding up against the output unless some idiot decided to add additional shims or triple stack slingers. I have seen welding issues when people do that. The slinger acts as a shield but does help oil flow dumping out of the front during hard braking. If GM was really concerned about metal chips getting into the bearing they would have used a shielded rear bearing which was more prone to getting chips in it from people grinding reverse. So you have to understand that some of these service bulletins have merit and some are useless. I have a few binders worth of service bulletins. The new transmissions I build now use sealed bearings.

I am sure there are lots of supposed re-builders out there or "Parts Replacers" What Paul Does is Blue Print a Transmission .. He also seems to know about weak points and upgrades that have been made over the years.. It appears he knows the aftermarket sources for improved parts.. The Hot Rod Magazines always mention M-22 Rock Crushers.. I have no idea that the difference is between M-20 21 or 22 . I am going to assume they are heavier and stronger than a Borg Warner T-10 My Impression is the M-22 maybe went more with Big Block Engines.. When I ordered my Z-28 Camaro in 1979 I chose the close ration Trans thinking of road racing .. Wrong need up doing more drag racing where the lower 1st gear would have been better with a Wide ration trans,. I think my Doug Nash 5 speed has a 3.23 first gear or 3,27 which was a huge improvement off the line . My guess is the Borg warner T-10 is lighter and cheaper.. I am sure Paul explains this in a book or in a Video.. Also I noticed that Paul works bare handed. I never saw a mechanic on youtube before that didn't wear gloves.. ja ja ja I am 57 never wore gloves either except of course in the parts washer ect or handing sharp gears surfaces ect.. and have not yet died from cancer.. @GearBoxVideo
@GearBoxVideo6 жыл бұрын
I do use gloves when working with solvents and extreme dirty conditions.
@mikeskidmore67546 жыл бұрын
Yes I noticed that you wear gloves some times.. I have a barrel of diesel .. A mineral spirits dunk tank . Then a parts washer with mineral spirits.. I like to use a pressure washer to clean big parts.. Mostly big trucks .. So my parts are pretty clean but the time I get them in the Mineral Spirits parts washer.. My life time experience with car transmissions .. Stock Turbo 350 does not hold up .. Power Glides are indestructible . 700R4 if you pull a trailer in overdrive you are doomed.. My '79 Z-28 Camaro I should have ordered wide Ratio T-10 not close ration .. My bad.. the turbo 350 would have been $77 extra .. Stock Dough Nash 5 speed shifts slower than Molasses in January at high RPM's They do make them in Overdrive now but Tremac looks better to me .. and I learned that GearBoxVideo upgrades the Dough Nash to shift better by blueprinting and better . synchros.. It looks to me like there are enough Old Classic Muscle Cars and race cars out there using gear boxes to keep Paul Cangialosi until he is an old Man .. My Question is will these 7-8 or 10 Speed Autos outperform and hold up in Z-28 Camaros and Vettes.. The Z-28 Camaro with Paddle shift and Magnetic ride suspension is putting very Expensive European cars to shame on the Nuremberg ring.. My guess is they are very expensive.. @GearBoxVideo Also it looks like Borg Warner T-10 replaced Muncie M-20-21-22 .. is the Borg Warner as strong ?

Question: Normally I've seen you swap input shafts to convert to a sealed system. You didn't this time. Why is that? Customer wanted to keep the old M21 input shaft for historic/financial reasons?
@GearBoxVideo8 жыл бұрын
+Larry Bolan Nope. Its because we are using a stock case. The sealed inputs use the wider bearing. If I am using an aftermarket Supercase that utilizes the wider bearing than I can convert to a full sealed system. Factory cases have no provisions for the wider bearing as well as have enough material on the extension housing to thread it for a vent which is required when going fully sealed. You may find people selling adapter kits to convert to a wider sealed bearing to use with a stock case. I do not recommend these or see any advantage.

Excellent Video , We can always learn from others .. I have to say I've been doing Muncie's going back into the 1960's .. I still do a few for the local guys .. Quick story > I was flat towing my 70 SS LS6 M22 back from the track when the trans went into gear ( so I thought ) After teardown , first gears had welded onto the main shaft . After 40+ years I replaced first gear & mainshaft /rebuild kit and sold it ..
@GearBoxVideo8 жыл бұрын
Happens often when flat towing. The mainshaft is spinning within the gear but the transmission oil level isn't really moving, so the first gear welds because it has the largest surface speed of any gear. The other common issue is burnt out pilot rollers because as the oil travels to the rear when moving forward the pilot is completely out of the oil reservoir.

Please email me at support@5speeds.com with your current transmission's casting #s and specs such as splines on both shafts. Enclose your name address and phone and I will get a quote for you.

I have 4 Ford Thunderbird SCs. 2 are manual. They are very specific transmissions that are partially shared with the F150. Nobody has a video of a proper M5r2 build. Can you or an affiliate do a build on one?

+lilmangofast If someone would supply me with a transmission and parts I would.

+GearBoxVideo One of the issues Im pushing through is getting parts. Unfortunatly finding any M5r2 RKE parts are rare.

@@GearBoxVideo when will you be rebuilding again ?
@GearBoxVideo Жыл бұрын
When parts sources get stabilized and I don't know when that will be. Not interested in taking in work I can't get out and would be cluttering up the shop for months.

I never lower prices for anyone. I get that question every week. I think the worst thing you can do to someone is offer to sell at your first price and then lower it. First it implies that your work is overvalued and second tells the customer you will willing to rip them off for the extra 25 dollars!

@@GearBoxVideo That was what a customer asked me a while back. When we did carry outs.I quit selling them for obvious reasons. Would rather see them go else where. Not worth the trouble.
