Glenn thinks he can pull one over on us with his "one-knob" gate - but now we know the truth. Go comment Glenn's videos with #gategate so he'll know WE WON'T BE SILENCED (like high gain amps are when properly using a quality noise gate such as the Cockblocker)

When it comes to buffers: forget about trying to hear the difference. There won't be any. Not unless you have really poor cable or very, very long run. You need to measure those things, they are way out of our abilities. What you get is placebo and thinking that unbuffered is "weaker" is about what we expect our minds to tell us, especially when they are identical.

@@squidcaps4308 Only thing is, a lot of fuzzes and transistor drives really don't like being run after buffers, I think it has something to do with impedance

This gave me an idea. Im going to create my own pedal, that has 1 button, no knobs, 4 input jacks and 1 output jack. Here's how it will work: 1- plug in guitar to jack #1 2- plug a cable from jack #5 into your amp or preamp. Whatever 3- plug a cable from jack #2 into jack #3. This will reduce the overall volume by -4db. 4-plug another cable from jack #3 into jack #4. This will boost the signal by +4db. If you dont use this exact configuration, no sound will come out of the pedal at all. I call it the DNP-FU. the Does Nothing Pedal - Fuck You! Retail = $499 on sale today only, $80.

In electronics a "Buffer" is an Operational amplifier that takes the original that is typically weak on current and delivers exactly the same signal at the same Voltage but with more current so low impedance inputs don't affect and weaken the signal. I think you would not need buffered when you have an active pickup. And the gain is the voltage gain that outputs the "Buffer" Operational amplifier

Ho. Lee. Fuckballs. I got mine last night, and loved it just with the one knob. Knowing I can switch between buffered and true bypass is a fucking SWEEEEEEEEEEEEEET feature of this pedal. I don't know that I have a lot of use for cranking up the makeup gain, but it would make for a super simplified lead boost if I ever needed it. I think if I wanted a lead boost, I'd probably just get an extra volume boost, but it is neat.

@jimcamp2423

I would think the internal output volume knob is more or less related to the external threshold setting. Setting the threshold to be at a noisier level and you'd probably want the internal volume knob set lower so that the pre threshold noise is quieter and doesn't feedback. The fact that it has internal switch for buffered or unbuffered & the volume knob means they are there to trim & adjust the pedal for any best or worst case noise issues. Many other noise gate pedals have controls like those external & more accessible for those best & worst case scenarios. Not every rig set up is equally noisy. Also adding those features in the R&D phases of the pedal, it was probably easier to have a switch & pot to test & debug the pedal for final approval & product release. Sometimes soldering fixed vs adjustable components can be annoying. With the knob, the filter circuit can have the components for a worst case noise issue, but a best case noise issue & that might need to be tweaked for optimal end result tone.

actually you don't need to put the buffer first in all cases, turns out that when you put a Buffer between a Fuzz Pedal and a Wah it actually does the fuction of making the signal smoother as it will reduce the output from the Fuzz (reducing noise) and making it cleaner before the signal reaches the Wah, so it actually is just repeating the pattern of the sound before it reaches the Wah... I'm interested to see what that thing does when you plug it between a Fuzz and a Wah

Hey man, pretty sure the buffered/not buffered only refers to the signal routing whilst the pedal is bypassed, usually through a transistor-based emitter follower or op-amp-based voltage follower. While the pedal is on there is most likely a buffer on the input to increase the input impedance of the pedal. So there should not be any difference while the pedal is on. Of course, I haven’t seen the circuit so this is all just an assumption :)
