To me Del's death is more significant because JD lost his best friend, and Marcus can understand what his son's going through because he remembers how he felt when he lost Dom in GOW 3. More than likely for Gears 6 JD will still be alive, and it will be both him and Kait who will kill Queen Reyna the same way Marcus did to Myrrah.

I think that’s cause if JD dies, Marcus has basically nothing. He already lost everyone he cared about but his son is truly all he has left and if you save Del then it’s gone. He no longer has anything to live for and it leaves him an empty husk. His feelings being a reflection of all his remaining loved ones, nothing. That and seeing his son in that grieving state probably resurfaced the memory of Dom’s death.

The detail in this game is impeccable, especially with the characters of the two Fenix men and how they handle situations of grief. At 1:02 and 2:24, you see both Marcus and James shrug of someone’s efforts to console them about a loved ones death. However, if JD lives (which imo is the better path) Marcus knows that is exactly what he’d do, because he has been through it before. He knows the pain of losing your best friend in battle. He knows how to console his son because of how much of a spitting image JD is of him. Beautiful work.

As much as I like seeing Marcus' reaction to losing his son. I think Del's death is actually more impactful. It fucks up everybody in their squad. Kait is of course traumatized because she made the choice. JD loses it, Marcus knows exactly what he's going through and comforts him. Fahz is even more torn up about it in Del's scene than JD'S, notice how much slower Mr. Shades takes off his glasses. It's those little details that make Del's death scene so good, he really was the heart of the team, the glue.

Would you rather let one of the Oldest Grub Killer lose the very last thing he has close to a family, or do you let JD and Kait lose one of if not the closest thing to a friend they've ever gotten since leaving the Coalition, the one who was there for everyone when thing went sour, the guy who tried his hardest to put a smile on everyone's face through the hardest battle they've ever fought yet? Both loses are massive to their own credits, neither one feels more important to the other, it's just a matter of, "Are you willing to make sacrifices others arent willing to make themselves?"

During my co op run with my brother, we misinterpreted how the choosing part works, but kinda rolled with it at first. We both sat in the most stunned and emotional silence I think we have ever had until we saw Marcus react to what we had done. Almost with tears in our eyes we both looked at each other and agreed to immediately re-do it. We could not stand to see Marcus so broken. Still can't. Breaks mah heart. Still really killed me to see Fahz broken up, too, though. I like Fahz.

Reason why Del death should be canon - Marcus already went though the losing someone close arc so it is repetitive - JD is the next Marcus so going though the same trauma as Marcus once did makes sense -The setup from Gears 4 would be cut short if JD's death is canon

Imma throw this out there. I feel like JD's death should be the canon choice whereas I'm fairly certain Del's death will be canon. Here's why. For me and for the Coalition killing JD creates the most interesting Narrative choice. One it separates the Gears Story from being the story of the Fenix Family. Which I feel is kind of necessary at this point to keep the story that of a grounded human narrative rather than this epic tragedy surrounding one virtually untouchable family. Two JD in Hindsight was kinda clearly being set up for his death the whole game. JD's mortality in the first act is tested twice as he has to very close brushes with death hinting that he's not invincible. Even more so on top of that the mistakes he's made and how the subsequently forced him to push his friends away. Then consequentially needing to be redeemed in the later half. His death in the defense of the friends he hurt would have been that Ultimate redemption his character was trying to get. Thirdly Del as the protagonist for game 3 creates a very interesting prospect. It takes away the rehashing feel that would be JD stepping into his father's shoes to end the war and avenge his friend which I'd exactly what we saw in the previous gears trilogy with Marcus. Exploring who Del is as a character beyond his relationships with his friends interests me more than finishing JD'S redemption arch and seeing him become the great man we all know he's capable of. Watching the Everyman in Del step up to the plate is new and fresh and the game centered around him would really reflect that. No longer is he just the supportive friend he's gotta carry torch and finish the fight like Sam in the Lord of the Rings. Plus getting to know more about Del is more interesting than rehashing the Daddy issues and Bearing the weight of the World nature we're going to continue to get from JD in gears 6. I almost feel like The Coalition decided they were gonna kill JD but then just couldn't go through with it so they made us choose as a cop out.

I think that what really sells the "Del's death" scenario and how Marcus reacts is how he can trully feel the same pain JD felt from losing a close friend on his skin because of Dom. At the same time they're not *just* squad members who've grown to become close friends, since Marcus is JD's father, so there's also the added weight and responsibility of that. The best way i can tangibly define the situation is this: not only do you have to see your son crying and suffering from a loss much like a loss that once tormented you, you'll also have to bear the weight of reliving your own loss since you'll automatically empathize and thus project yourself into his place, all the while having to swallow how powerless you are/were about the fact and not being able to help your son to brace for the inevitable loss of hope and absolute destruction of spirit yet to come. And lets not forget that all hell's breaking lose while you two crumble to dust inside your own heads, so in the end of the day you both would STILL have to clad your heart in stone and move out as if nothing ever happened. Now consider that this actually happened in our world, not once, but many times in all the wars humanity has ever fought. Lost, nameless soldiers who died way before the enemy ever got their hands on them. If that shit doesn't get you, i don't know what will.

I think most players here will choose to save JD, simply because we’ll have more emotional attachment to him. We played as him throughout the entire first act, seeing him go from his go lucky gears 4 self to a somewhat no nonsense captain because of what he tried to pull with the hammer of dawn, players will probably feel bad for him. Also, he’s Marcus’s son, and no one wants to put Marcus through anymore pain than he already has been.

I saw a video comparing his reaction to doms death to JD’s. I thought the reactions givin had different reasons. Dom was his brother. They went through IT ALL together. By gears 3 yes they made it so far and haven’t lost their lives, and death was also lingering behind them. But the thought of actually losing dom wasent there. When it happened it was strictly emotions of shock and disbelief then acceptance. For JD his emotion stem of that of a father losing his son. You don’t scream, you don’t go bezerk. As a parent you are speechless. Especially with how Marcus and JD’s relationship was rocky, banging heads, for the majority of their lives together. Seeing the tags just made him feel like a complete failure as a father. Despite going through so much war, drawbacks in missions, failed operations, this is the first time he actually felt DEFEATED. He lost. I’m sure when Anya passed he made a promise to her to keep their son safe, and when he couldn’t even do that (I’m not blaming his for his death but when they had a talk on how JD always had “something to prove” you can tell on the back on marcus’ mind that JD would do something extremely risky that could ultimately cost him his life and Marcus felt he didn’t do enough to keep him from avoiding the inevitable) marcus finally cracked. When I saw him take the tags I saw the same defeated and tired face that dom had in the trailer ashes to ashes for gears 3 right when a locust was about to kill him. Marcus’ was done with the war.

JD was given character development throughout the new Gears, especially 5. What better way to bring it to a climax than to have him lose his closest friend? He also has a bit of unresolved plot involving Baird and his (JD's) redemption. It's JD's turn to settle the score with Reyna. Del on the other hand is literally a side character. Despite him being Player 2 for basically all of Gears 5, he's had little to no development ever since 4. There's nothing unresolved when he dies.

Both are portrayed well. When Marcus finds out JD is dead he is heartbroken by it but when Kait tries to comfort him he shrugs away and says “we’re not done.” he shrugs his emotions away. When it’s him finding out Del dies he comforts his son. He kind of wants JD to let it out so he doesn’t end up like him having to act tough. Gears 4 and 5 may not be as strong entrees as the original trilogy but I still find them enjoyable. They may not be as horror based or dark tone than the other but they still get the family aspect of it. These soldiers form a bond and become family.

It was a no-brainier for me, I choose to save James Easily. As for Del, well he was a friendly, caring, character but overall a very bland character, just like Kait, but less entitled, ignorant, and annoying. After watching both of these cutscenes, saving James works a lot better in terms of character arcs. Marcus went through the same thing losing his brother in war Dominic, so it's poetic to see James go through something similar and for Marcus to be there to help James. Why the hell was this a multiple choice was quite stupid in my opinion.

Honestly the people saying JD should die are so wack. Here's the thing: Del isn't bad, he actually became interesting in this game, but he's still literally just the loyal friend and comic relief. He has no character arc to finish because he never had one to start with. He has always just been assisting in someone else's story. While he's loyal and funny, he has no development that's going to make him a key player in the bigger picture. Now JD became a very interesting character in this game. Why? Because he's flawed, a trait both Del and Kait lack, which in turn makes them boring. Characters with no flaws are not interesting. Remember how Marcus was in a goddamn prison in Gears 1? THAT establishes him as flawed right from the bat, because he EARNED his situation through mistakes. The first game is largely a story of redemption for a disgraced former hero. JD has a similar path here, where he makes mistakes and is changed by those mistakes, both physically and mentally. His arc, if ended in gears 5, is utterly wasted. The ultimate redemption is JD stepping out of his father's shadow and becoming the leader he was meant to be, and part of that is recognizing his flaws. His desire to be a hero and be perfect is what led to his mistakes... Though I will point out that the writers reeaally tried hard to make us hate JD and it felt so forced. Idk about anyone else but I was in the Marines for 6 years and everyone's reaction to JD firing on the protesters was dramatic to say the least. Comicly and absurdly dramatic. You see something everyone in a leadership role is taught is that you will have to make split second decisions in dangerous situations. These choices are supposed to be done with the BEST AVAILABLE INFO at hand, AT THE TIME, and it's very possible in hindsight they could be wrong. In the UCMJ it literally states that decisions can only be judged based off the info that was available at the time. Del being an officer in the army and knowing this, makes his reaction seem completely unrealistic and downright silly. Not for nothing he's also JD's best friend. That whole storyline was just extremely blown out of proportion, and idk, I just did not feel any sort of resentment for JD. The story is very clearly written by some clearly left leaning people who have zero military experience. I bring that up because some use the excuse that JD was/is a bad person when they argue he should die over Del. So A. I don't really buy that at all, because JD being a bad guy was clearly forced on us and we were supposed to just looovee Kait and Del, who are essentially unflawed and have impeccable morality. Idk how much this writing was, eh, social-justice-d up let's say, but I just feel like the lead, straight, cis, white guy being flawed is too convenient when his opposite is the unflawed minority characters. Idk. Also B. You have to address the issue of redemption. Do characters deserve to die for their sins? Or is the just punishment to live with the failure, and grow from it to become something better.
