Welcome to my journey with the 2021 Ford F-150 PowerBoost. Over the past 30 months, my truck has become both a source of joy and frustration, spending a staggering 10% of its life in the shop for various issues. From unexpected breakdowns to lengthy repairs, this experience has tested my patience and loyalty to the brand.
In this video, I'll take you through:
The Highs & Lows of Ownership: From the initial excitement of purchasing my F-150 PowerBoost to the growing concerns over its reliability.
Repair Nightmares: A breakdown of each major repair, including a new transmission, EGR valve and cooler issues, and the emotional and practical toll these setbacks have taken.
Considering the Alternatives: A look at potential replacements like the 2024 GMC Sierra 1500 and the 2024 RAM 1500, and the dilemma of choosing between diesel and gasoline engines.
The Bigger Picture: Reflecting on vehicle reliability and manufacturing quality in today's automotive market.
What Next?: I'll share my thought process and invite you, the viewers, to offer advice, share your experiences, and help me weigh my options.

Man, I really hear your frustration and honestly share your experience. My family loved our Powerboost when it was working, but it spent about 3 months at the dealership at repairs, too. We love roadtrips, and it basically came down not trusting the darned thing if it bricked on us. Didn’t matter if I provided video to the dealership, if they couldn’t recreate the problem nothing was done. Good luck on making the best decision for you and yours.

Dude I feel for you, I honestly started following your channel just because of your truck videos. I have a hour commute to work each way and have racked up 207,000 miles on my jeep. I was looking at buying a new truck so I’d have something reliable if I need it. I was thinking of a new f150 and that’s how I found your channel. Now after this video I’m having second thoughts. Good luck to you man and I’ll be waiting to see what decisions you make.

Sorry that you’re going through all that you have been with this truck. I haven’t had any such issues with mine yet. I hope you decide to keep it for a while as I have learned quite a bit on your channel. In terms of requests for further mods… I would love to see a high flow cat install on the Powerboost as no one has done this yet.

First off love your channel really enjoy watching your videos. Now I’ve been a Ford guy all my life I’ve had some great experiences and some bad ones. I am currently driving a 21 Limited and have had a few problems but nothing like you have had. I think you just got a lemon and that could happen with any vehicle. Trust me I’ve had trucks in the past that were in the shop more than in my driveway but that doesn’t make Ford a bad manufacturer, when you buy something it’s always a gamble I think anyway. Ford makes a great truck. If you’re dream vehicle is a Raptor then I would trade this one in and get your dream vehicle. You only live once. Another thing is I think the dealership you have dealt with isn’t doing you any favours I would go somewhere else. Keep up the great videos and hopefully it will all work out.

Thanks for sharing your experience. I honestly feel bad because I commented on all your vids about how great my 21 3.5 Ecoboost has been. 37k trouble free miles so far. Other than my automatic up windows needed to be reset once. Personally, when I have a motor or transmission go out I usually move on to the next vehicle. However, with high interest rates and no deep incentives to purchase, I'd probably hold on to it a while longer. Good luck, whatever you decide, I'll be tuned in! Cheers!

Thanks I appreciate that, I think the high interest rates are what is keeping me set right now. I managed to get this truck at a good price and good rate literally a couple weeks before the market went haywire from covid. I am hoping to see some bigger discounts later this year possibly.

I have a 2021 Platinum Powerboost and have not experienced the problems you are having, but the recalls have been plentiful. I had a Ram 1500 limited and it spent so much of its life in the dealership. I had to let it go, it was just a nightmare. I wanted to love the Ram, but it just was possessed. The Ford has so much going for it but I know you become gun shy and worry what tomorrow will bring. The GM diesel has its own issues, but the gas mileage is hard to beat. I think as long as the warranty will cover the repairs, I would stick it out. All the mods you have done have made it a sharp truck and I am not sure you would get that money and labor back on a trade. I think I would wait a while before making the decision so it isn't an emotional one. Good luck.

Sorry to hear about the troubles you're experiencing with your 2021 F-150. I own a 2021 F-150 as well with 68K miles on it and so far it's been running great without any issues, except for a couple of recalls regarding a sensor and a windshield wiper motor. Since you got that new transmission, it might be worth putting another 10K miles on it to see if any additional issues come up. I hope everything work out well for you, whether you keep it or trade it for another truck.

Great video. Sorry about all of the issues you have been having. I would keep the truck for now. I have a ‘22 Powerboost with just over 41k that I leveled with the Roush Fox kit and put in a Magnaflow exhaust. The only issues that I had was the Cats were replaced and the dreaded exhaust heat exchanger leaked and was replaced. Both were done early last year. No issues since. I have a dealer that has been very helpful. The truck has been great to me.

I can fully sympathize with you. I had a 2022 Powerboost and after a 4 month wait for a heat exchanger and then a unknown wait for a starter at 37000 km (just under 23000 miles, I'm from Canada) I said screw it and swapped it for a 2023 5.0 I will miss the 7.2 KW generator for camping season, but so be it. 5.0 has run flawlessly so far. I think the Powerboost just nee a few more years to work out all the kinks.

You should go test drive a Land Rover Defender. Same price range you’re looking at, they have a great warranty and insane customer service. When you need work done you call them and they come pick up your car. No time wasted at the dealer. The sales side of things is no hassle, super chill. The defender rides up high like a truck. You can still lift it and put tires on it and stuff. I have a ‘23 110 X-Dynamic for our family car and love it. I’ve been following your vids because I’ve got a 24 powerboost on order to take the place of our second fam car, which is due to arrive in a couple weeks! I’m sorry that you’ve had a bad experience with yours. Hopefully they get it fully fixed for you. If not check out defender that has the off road tire package, that truck is dope!

Sorry to hear you’ve had a bad experience. I’ve been watching your videos since before I got my 2021 F-150 Lariat 2.7L. I’ve had minor issues with mine: window switches not working, various recalls, a broken horn and a leaking transfer case, but nothing this bad. I’m around 40k with considerably less issues so it sounds like a powerboost-related issue, unfortunately. I’d keep it till 50k and then decide. You’d still be under the powertrain warranty at that point so you’re safe.

After watching your videos I went with a '22 PB and now just have over 50k with 0 issues that required a dealership. I came from a 21 Sierra AT4 that required lifters at 25k. Ive determined that unfortunately all manufacturers have issues and it's the luck of the draw. There is so much tech in these vehicles that some are bound to fail just based on statistics. I love the PB for the outlets and at 10k miles i realized even if craps out, ill fix it or buy another. Best of luck.

My 5.0 trucks have been perfect except for a bad driveshaft in my 18. The powerboosts are not a good representation of f150's as a general statement. All the fleets local to me that purchased the PB's are already replacing them with 5.0's.

@@ryanjcoon1 I now have a 2023 Raptor R. My Gen 2 was a 2017 and I had no issues with it. I had it for 4 years and 70k miles before I sold it when a dealership approached me during the pandemic and offered me a price I couldn’t refuse. My only complaint was the 10 speed liked to have clunky gear hunting and I also wasn’t to thrilled about the exaust. Other than that, it was a great truck! I bought a 2013 Gen1 Raptor after that and loved it as well. Amazing truck and the 6.2L V8 is amazing. I’ve got a 2022 powerboost that I’ve had some aggravating issues with. A pin module for the radio, transmission control module, Bluetooth receiver module, and still having issues with the infotainment screen. I’ve found a nice little workaround by holding the power button and skip forward button to reset the screen, kinda annoying but no real issues like a full transmission like yourself. So far I’ve really enjoyed the power and efficiency of the powerboost. Unfortunately the trade value on these trucks have crashed hard. Probably can’t get out of it for a few years because of the negative equity 😑

I feel your pain. I had a 2018 lariat with the 5.0 that had a new engine put in due to excessive oil consumption, rebuilt transmission and rebuilt rear end done to It. To add insult to injury I had 37 other warranty repairs done to it. The truck only had 45000 miles on it. I ended up getting rid of it and purchased a 2022 lariat power boost which I’ve had for 17 months and 15000 miles on it. I have had 0 issues with it. It has only been at the dealership for oil changes. 🤞. It could be that you have gotten a lemon like I did with my 2018. I would not be to quick on giving up on ford trucks. I have 3 brothers with f 150s. A 2015,2016 and a 2017. So far other than minor issues they have had good luck with their trucks. One word of caution. Like any new vehicles on the market today when we start changing things around or changing specs it could have some domino effect with other components. Remember there are tons of sensors in today’s vehicles. Wishing you the best whichever way you decide to go.

That's a tough one. You may have other issues down the road. Quite frankly, I think the quality of new cars in general has gone down, along with all the additional electronics they now have. I was scared when I bought my new 2018 6.2 Crew Cab z71 Sierra that I would have the 8 speed shudder or the dreaded "Chevy shake" fortunately, the truck has been awesome with zero issues.

My '22 Powerboost is at 57,000 miles right now, I drive 82 miles each way for my commute and Ive had two issues in total so far... the dreaded exhaust heat exhanger and a leaky front transfer case seal. Stick with the truck for a bit more man and see if the issues have been worked out now that you have updated parts in the truck.

Thats kind of where I am right now, how many more things could possibly go wrong? I think it's just a mental thing now of losing confidence in the truck. It's quite possible I trade it in and the next owner has 100,000 trouble free miles.

@GearsGadgets my advice would be to get an extended warranty so that everything is covered just in case but these trucks really are pretty good once the kinks get worked out.... I've got a lot of seat time offroad with mine now.... rutted trails and mud are a good proving ground to find failure points. If nothing else, maybe trade up for a newer Powerboost that has had the first year (and second year) issues corrected.

Been following your F150 Powerboost adventure. I have burned through 2 Powerboost f150. Started with a 2021 then 2023 and both were condemned by transmission issues, the 2023 was worse than the first. Friends and colleagues told me to go to Toyota, but I decided to go with a 2023 F150 Tremor, it has been next to perfect and have not looked back. I use my truck as a tool for work and not being road worthy is not acceptable. My take, I am intrigued with the Powerboost, but I am not convinced it is truly ready for/as a working mans truck, around town and local commuting seems to be fine.

from the research I've seen on the internet a smart way to approach this problem is to dial in what (older) truck you want and then spend alot of time speaking with mechanics and such to find out what span of years are the best for that model. Then go and find the 1 owner guy who really loved his truck and buy from him. Let the man and the truck tell you the "story" of that particular vehicle and then make your decision to purchase that one or move on to the next. If you are looking for another F150 look at the 2016-2017 with the 5.0 motor. This has been the most reliable of the latest version of the 5.0. Brother, I've owned the powerstroke and if you only want to own it while it is still under warranty (any diesel) then the diesel is great but as soon as the warranty is gone, you are looking at MAJOR cost to repair all the different "systems" on those motors....def...exhaust...fuel sys..egr...etc... Or go with a new gas 7.3 f250... i don't know about the new chevy motor... I understand the frustration and unfortunately this problem is not going to go away for any manufacturer..

Coming from a 2020 f150 lariat that’s transmission 💩 with less than 30k miles I has the opportunity to try a couple different vehicles. First was a 2020 gmc Sierra at4 with the 3.0…really liked it, but the newer gm interiors are much better. Next was a 23 tundra, it was fine and drove well, but didn’t love the plasticy cheap build feel interior and exterior, had a number of recalls, and just wasn’t thrilled with it. Powertrain is excellent though. I ended up with a 24 Sierra elevation with the 5.3…I could have done either way between the 5.3 and 3.0, they both drive well. The newer gm trucks interior is so well put together and the truck just feels solid. I put bilstein 5100’s on the front and back and raised both 2” to give similar to at4 lift, but bilsteins > rancho. Really happy with how it turned out. Hoping the truck holds up, but would recommend going with something like a loaded elevation and modifying (they have huge incentives on them rn). I really do like ram’s but their pricing is insane

My wife is a service advisor at a Ford dealer. The power boost trucks send to be problematic unlike the regular 3.5 and 5.0 trucks. If you have most of your stock parts maybe start over with a non power boost model or go GMC. I have a 23 Raptor and not a single problem in one year and 10k miles.

I have worked in the auto manufacturing industry for 13 years. Ive owned alot of trucks between GM and Ford over that timeframe. I had a 2015 Silverado and got the same chevy shake you did at 100K. I traded in for a 22 Sierra 1500 Denali Duramax and I totally regretted it. 1. The Engine is amazing and have it on my yukon and that is honestly the only thing I liked in the truck. 2. The seats are so dang uncomfortable, especially anything over 300 miles in a day trip. It gave me back pain and im only 200lbs. 3. The interior real estate in the newer GM with the console shifter is awful. Losing that larger tray cargo area from a 15 felt like I went to a car. I couldnt even fit a mason jar in my cup holdersz 3. The radio and interferce is trash. Mine was replaced twice and kept having audio go full blast with no way to turn off unless went to bluetooth. Too many glitches. I went and built a 23 F250 and honestly aith the max recline seats, its been my favorite truck ive owned. Super comfortable interior. Quality feels a littler on the cheaper side from a feel perspective on the plastics in a Lariat. Especially compared to others, but the seats sold me and im happy with it. I also upgraded to a 60Gal diesel tank and its been awesome! Can get from MI to FL in one tank.

I have a 22 power boost with 30k on it. I love the truck and hate it at the same time. It’s very quirky. It’s never left me stranded but I don’t feel like it’s something I should keep long term. I’ve had it to the dealer twice for transmission issues and they can’t figure it out. When it’s 30 degrees or colder I’ll fire it up and back up 20-30 feet and it locks up like it shifted into park. Other times it feels like the brakes lock up. First mile or so it feels like the transmission slips around 4th gear. There’s times when I’ll drive 5 minutes before the screen turns on. Bringing it in again next week too see if they can figure it out

Now I own a 2022 powerboost with 20k on it and I just don't have the confidence in it I had in my other F150s I've owned. Three recalls but zero issue with it so far.But now I am starting to here a clunking noise coming from the left rear when accelerating form a stop. Guess I will have to take it to the dealer but like you I hate that.

The BEST solution is often the SIMPLEST. The issue with almost all modern cars is how complicated they are. I found myself in the market for a new truck this past summer and honestly wasn’t super impressed with any of the offerings. I ended up with a new f150 with the 5.0 4x4. So far it’s been great. It’s comfortable and gets good gas mileage (just averaged a little over 24 mpg from Texas, up to Colorado and back). That all being said, I don’t really prefer Ford over GM over Toyota (but don’t care for Ram products outside of their diesel HD products) just whoever can get me a comfortable, SIMPLE truck.

Great video first and foremost , I would say keep it. The reason why is because you were having a very specific issue. I own a large fleet of trucks that are identical. There are issues that are common that we know to expect at certain mileages. Then there are issues that will happy to one unit out of many and its usually an issue that it was built with because it was built on a "Friday" so to speak. this may be the very issue with your unit. It sounds like you were having very specific issue. as far as egr's go they are all outsourced to companies overseas and they are a common frequent problem on gas and diesel engines. My advise would be if your out of factory warranty, stick an aftermarket warranty on it and keep the show going. I have a powerboats and beat on the truck hard, like pulling a 16,000 lbs trailer hard. I have a 2022 and it has 40k on it and it's been perfect. don't give up you have mild first year gremlins. Had two powerboost rentals while my 2017 Raptor was in the shop getting cam phasers, this happened to me in both of them. I really liked the MPG's and the ability of the powerboost, but can't trust the truck to buy one. Read it has to do with the harness that relays to the battery. 2.7 seems like it gets the same MPG as the powerboost, but lacks the ability to have pro power, and AC while the engine is off.

As a GM tech and Ford fanboy, I would move on. Unfortunately you did buy the first gen of the powerboost. Ive read and seen multiple issues with that powertrain. The powerboost adds alot of complexity which is prone to fail. GMs babymax is awesome. i would say that would serve you well with your needs. At my shop the most common problem the babymax comes in for is the engine coolant manifold failing internally. Other than that there hasnt been any real other issues with them. I wouldnt choose any other power train that GM offers. I personally own a 23 f150 with the 5.0 which I love. I would think a 3.5 ecoboost would fit you well. The current gen 3.5 seems to best generation so far. Ford will always be my choice but GM isnt a bad idea.
@GearsGadgets

That is some great insight. Maybe I will reconsider a Raptor in the 3.5 and just give up on the Powerboost. That or the babymax AT4 and do a build on that platform. Really appreciate the info.

@GearsGadgets
@GearsGadgets 4 ай бұрын
I don’t think any of the FDRS updates would have caused any issues. It was all Ford software. I also don’t think any of the mods I have done has any part of it either. They didn’t give me any grief about any of it but also no, they didn’t really give me an idea of what went wrong either. I’m guessing they will send the trans back for engineering to look at before anything is truly known.

I had a 2021 PB, had the stereo problem, then really great, until at 83K the transmission threw some codes. They replaced a sensor three times - then rebuilt the transmission - then put a new transmission altogether. The dealer showed me the retail on the PB transmission - it is $12K for the new gear and labor. I arranged a good trade in and got a new '23 F150 ecoboost - no problems and have 50K miles today. The problem is the complete hybrid system - it is so complicated, eventually they will figure it out ... but I didn't like being the first model year, mistake on my part. So, if you think Ford is bad - do some more homework - they all have some really challenging problems too. The real issue with the F150 is the powerboost.

First, I'm so sorry about what's going on with your truck. If I were you I would look into getting another truck. I've been watching a lot of videos by Scotty Kilmer and other youtubers. From what I understand is that a lot of the new cars and trucks from the car companies have been a problem. One KZbinr who did a video on the Ford Raptor said he will never buy a Ford again because of the customer service and long wait times to getting his truck back and that was his dream truck, the Ford Raptor. To be honest I haven't heard or watched any videos about the new Silverados and GMC Sierras. What I have learned is the new Dodge Rams have had a lot of transmission problems. A lot of people buy the 3rd generation Dodge Rams from 2006 -2010. The trucks are automatics and they're computerized and when they're computerized they don't just have six gears but can have up to 10 or 12 to save on fuel. If it was up to me, I would look for an older truck that was a manual transmission and buy that one. I own a Dodge Ram 2001 manual transmission, bought for $200.00 from the junkyard and spent 5k and it runs like a dream. If you could find one that is a manual 2nd or 3rd generation and again I don't know if you're hauling heavy stuff or just to get around, but I'll leave that up to you. I would not buy any of the brand new trucks from 2020 to present unless I did my do diligence. I would keep your current truck. Ford screwed up the truck they should fix it. If you like the truck then you should keep it, but I would get another truck because a truck like that, that is going to turn itself off on a freeway or on road trips will get old real fast and it would be nice to switch into another truck that you also like and know that it's not going to quit on you. Whatever you decide, get an older truck and get a manual transmission. You'll save on money and piece of mind in the long run, than worrying about where you're going to be tomorrow.

I'd see if happens again. If it does.. bye bye! My 2011 F-150 had electronic issues just out of warranty. Traded it in on a 2015 F-150... and needed tons of mechanical warranty repairs. After the 3rd dealer ghosted me saying, "we'll call you when the parts come in"... I went with a 2019 RAM 1500. It's had a leaky 3rd brake light, and it eats batteries [I think I know what causes it], but other than those 2 things, it's never been in for anything more than oil changes and tires. Almost 5 years into ownership, I'm super happy with it. It's a Limited with almost all the bells & whistles. Goes anywhere I need it to, does everything I want it to [except pass a gas station, LOL]. I recommend RAM to everyone. I've kept up with it, and Ford seems to have a TON of reliability issues. I'd love to have another Mustang, but don't want the headaches that come with ownership.

I have a 2022 PowerBoost and it has been trouble-free other than recently it was found that the four pin trailer plug was never hooked up. The reason I am posting is that I live in the South where lifting trucks is popular. I have heard many say do not lift a PowerBoost. There are several design factors that can cause major issues- the AC lines, the high voltage lines at the passenger side coiler, extra load on the trans and engine that may be misread by sensors, etc. etc. There are several posts as well online that people started having trouble AFTER leveling them or even having trouble getting it done. I just looked it up and one guy was going on and on about how he lifted his F150 with no issue posting several times making fun of the guy who said don't do it and then when the guy asked how did he not run into such issues and he said, "My '15 Lariat was no issue." So, right there he obviously had not lifted a PowerBoost by the model year. I dont know advice-wise what to tell you but I do know that the PowerBoost is a great truck but it may be too computerized for some mods.

I don’t think so. The lift maintains all of the OEM geometry so the only thing it really changes is some aerodynamics and the weight of the light (couple hundred pounds max). The truck stock is rated to tow over 12,000 lbs so I can’t imagine the lift would cause any transmission issues. Also, it hasn’t been lifted that long.
