First thing I did with my gearwrench ratchets was take it apart and flip the flex lock over. It feels more natural. Now they are like Matco.

Those are independent tool guys who have signed on with a program Gearwrench used to have where they wrap your truck in return for buying so much Gearwrench merchandise. It was a good program in its day because they gave the tool guys promotional support, too. But the program is no more, unfortunately. I got into it myself a few years ago and was glad because when you're not flying a franchise flag like Snap-On, Mato, Mac or Cornwell, it gives you some brand recognition.

Old school mechanic here, I've purchased the chrome locking flex head ratchet. And I gotta say the handeling and performance, especially on the locking flex head part, is by far the best locking flex head ratchet I've used. Now I've used the matco, Snap-on, and other popular brands, but this gearwrench locking flex head blows all the other locking brand of flex heads out of the water. My opinion the gearwrench locking flex head is the best choice then the other name brands of locking flex head drive ratchet. Can't wait to order the comfort grip version. Overall great 👍 review.

IMHO Snap-on is rapidly pricing themselves out of the market for the average Mechanic. In years past, the competition was not great and S-O and Mac truly stood way above all the others. Today is a different story! Teckton, Gear Wrench, Milwaukee, and heck even Kobalt are excellent choices all with lifetime warranty's.
@Rider00769
@Rider00769 4 жыл бұрын
I own majority of the Gearwrench ratchets throughout the years. But when it comes to warranty it can time consuming. My 3/8 120xp ratchet warranty took over 6 months from APEX tools. So, I bought the Matco ratchet 88 teeth off the truck warrantied it twice and no issues. In the end, it is the convenience factor you get what you've paid for...

i have two sets of the 84 tooth, im a diesel mech i wi, i love those ratchets, one set is 1/4 3/8 and 1/2 long non locking flex and a stubby 3/8 flex ( my personal favorite) and the other set is a 3/8 and 1/4 long ratchets. had them bout 2 years now and they have been great. i do like the orange, it would go well with the rest of my snp on and matco orange tools ive had since the early 90s when s-o came out with the hard handle orange. i already have the s- o ratchets , and a set of Cornwell 3/8 fine tooth which arent bad, just too thin with out the comfort grip. my old arthritic hands need the larger grip. been doing this since 89. gearwrench is doing a great job with the ratchets and sone other tools that would be great for a starting tech, and its not going to cost payments for the rest 😒 of your working career.

There are tool trucks that carry the Gearwrench brand, although Gearwrench itself isn't a tool truck franchise company like Snap-On, Matco, Mac and Cornwell. There are even trucks that display the Gearwrench brand from when they had a program for independent tool truck companies that wrapped their trucks in return for buying so much merchandise, called the Street Team Program. Very good review. Nice and thorough.

You can swap the orientation of the locking switch to match your other ratchets. Also, tiny shims under the spring help tighten up the head flex, and a shim on the thread side of the hinge bolt will help eliminate lateral slop.

@@timm5970 The handles are clunky and feel of ratchet is clunky (MATCO is slim, handle is nice and way better quality). Snapon ratchets are too big and their screw driver handles need to be slimmed down. Matco screwdrivers handles are better - know they are Witte but still don't like clunky tools - know the Snapon is excellent quality just wish they had a slimmer version. I never use my snapon ratchets the old school ones were wayyyy slimmer.

What does made in the usa really mean? Well in the case of the matco it means the metal for the rachet handle is usa sourced and assembled in the usa. Does it mean the whole rachet is American made? No it does not. They could still use some imported parts i.e. selector switch and locking switch and it would still considered made in the usa since the cost of those parts is miniscule compared to the cost of the manufacturing. Now I'm not saying that they due import their selector or locking switch I'm just saying it wouldn't effect the made in the usa badging. I'd still recommend buying American rachets while you can, but I have been impressed with some of the gearwrench stuff. Just recently they had alot of stuff on sale through amazon. I picked up their mids and a 3 piece locking extensions. Try them out if you get the chance to.

That’s great of Gearwrench to send you those ratchet sets for your professional review. So, what’s the next step? Maybe come up with a contest to give one set away as a prize...hint...hint?😁 NAPA seems big on offering a lot of Gearwrench hand tools.

Is it just me or do the Gearwrench locking flexhead look very similar to the Matco Brand? other than the lock button locking in the opposite direction they look identical including the soft grip handle design I am very interested in the Gearwrench set now was wanting the Matco set but kinda leaning towards the Gearwrench set at this point and will save a little money too

@jimhaines8370
@jimhaines8370 4 жыл бұрын
I have been told that the 84 tooth will be replaced by 90 tooth at some point as far as use and strength the design is very close but supposedly the 90 tooth is a little stronger. The head thickness is about the same as the 84 tooth, the 120 tooth ratchets have a thicker head

@@jimhaines8370 yea I heard they was going to replace the 84t with the 90t also which kinda sux bc i love the 84t locking flex head and like the red handle better than the newer 90t hopefully I can get an 84t even cheaper now tho lol

Matco was part of Danaher which had lots of brands made here and imported like Gearwrench. Matco was so when they split and Apex was formed and I’m sure Apex kept patents as Matco was spun off to a different holding company. Matco went to AJ manufacturing to have ratchets done after flood at Sumpter SC plant and poor machinery condition from lack of upkeep led to discontinuing of US production. There was a year when Matco could not get ratchets or parts. That is when Armstrong/ Allen/ KD/ and other US brands where discontinued sadly as there where all made by Danaher / Apex so they went away. Back when Danaher owned and made all the brands Gearwrench 84 Matco Armstong 88 ratchets could all use the same repair kit so they were very close to the same.

Thanks guys! I own a set of the 84t locking flex head amd I was wondering if there is a reason to upgrade...sounds like no need to upgrade for me. I love these ratchets, and gearwrench cust service was super responsive when I needed a new O-ring...they sent me the whole rebuild kit with no questions asked!

Looking at different company than tekton and sunex. Best tools I've owned so far. Gearwrench seems like a good option thanks for the information. Check out tektons website if you make an account they have free shipping I believe and 10% back to put towards later purchases
