I think it's good for kids to have a healthy fear of guns. More like awe? My youngest is 11. She doesn't want to shoot and we don't push her. She's the only one not to go to the range yet, although she has handled an empty one with one of us around. Another thing I've done is speak to her closest friends who spend a lot of time in our house. I've taught them the basics of gun safety (the four rules mentioned already for kids) and I've told the parents I'd be happy to show them my unloaded gun. Sadly, none of them have taken me up on the offer. I explained exactly what you said, showing them takes the mystery out of them. Good video, as always. Thank you!

Thank you for sharing! We tell our 5 year old boys they can always ask to look at our guns (they sometimes see us put ours on) sometimes they have questions and it’s great to curb their curiosity. Always have open conversation! Great video!

the NRA has a great video of u search for Eddie the Eagle. He teaches them a catchy song on what to do if they come upon a gun and it works. My son was at a realities house where a gun was left (unloaded thank God) out in the open and he sung the song to him self. The steps in the song are Stop, Don't touch, Runaway, Tell a Grown Up and he told an adult. I wasn't even there. This video along with me teaching him about guns is what I've been doing.

I think since we always shoot and have always had guns, BB guns it was important they know the difference and how to tell quickly. Have them not be scared of it and or think its something unattainable! everything you said is SO true ! Great video as a new subscriber thx :-)

NO "TOY GUNS" in our house! My boys are now 14 and 17 and never "played with toy guns". We taught them guns are not toys. Bought them BB guns when they were small, taught them proper use and safety always. They now are proficient in firearms use and safety. They have earned BSA merit badges for rifle and shotgun. LOVE your channel here.

hey guys Cuyahoga County neighbor here. have been thinking about "auto loading holsters" as a preventative against having my young boys who climb all over me from bumping against my firearm with a chambered round in it. how if at all would you consider using one for concealed carry. Or is this just a safety pipe dream?

I was just curious at what age are you going to allow your oldest child access to one of your firearms? My daughter is now 13y/o and is now babysitting my 8y/o son, she has been shooting since she turned eight and is very safe/good shot. I installed and mounted a gunvault safe in our safe/panic room that she is to go to with my son if the need should arise. I just wanted to get your take on this. Thanks

I had my own 22 rifle at 8 or 9. My brother and I would go out plinking all the time. This is rural and years ago. Never had a toy gun or pointed at anyone even pretending. I taught my kids safety. I found that people that are not around guns think that they are "magical" you just have a gun and you stop the bad guy. Or a gun can make you do bad things.

Both my kids(12 and 15) are well educated about firearms. I trust them more around guns than i do cleaning their rooms. ;) I recently gave both kids the combination to a small safe that holds one gun. It's loaded with one in the chamber, just in case something happens when i'm not at home.It's the XD9 loaded with 15 rounds and a spare mag right beside it.Let's hope that day never comes, but at least we have a plan to the best we can anticipate something going wrong.

I've taught and have been reiterating proper gun handling and safety to my children. My youngest son has a bit of fear of them. The freaking school systems talked about them MUCH younger than he was ready, and you know how those liberal extremists "teach" about firearms. I was HIGHLY angry. We've worked past the fear though.

here is my take on this.... Discipline, Responsibility and Trust. my kids 7 and 5, boy and girl, know exactly what a firearm is and the intended purpose of a firearm. i can leave them around a weapon if i wanted to but they stay away from their reach. one day i will give them the opportunity to shoot.

My kids are very aware of my guns, and I am always talking to them about gun safety with them. My question to you is this, when they have their friends over, should I make their friends or parents aware that I have guns in my house, and should I talk to them about gun safety? Or, should I leave that to their parents?

do you carry your guns on you when at home? if so, do you have a round in the chamber? my wife and i are just getting back into guns and working towards our ccws, we have a 3 year old daughter. we have been carrying unloaded around the house to get used to and prepare for our ccw. I'm concerned about my daughter every time she's any where near me, i get hyper sensitive about where my gun is pointing even though it's not loaded. it's somewhat comical in that i won't even let her walk behind me on the stairs because i feel she could be in the line fire if it were loaded and accidently went off. what's the best practice here?
@AcheronLV-426
@AcheronLV-426 6 жыл бұрын
My opinion, the fear you have, while legitimate, is misplaced. A loaded firearm in a holster shouldn't go off. However, that said, if you do carry around the house, be mindful of the child and where they are. If you're holding your child, being conscious of what they grab or sit on is crucial. Finally, being fearful of something is much different than being aware of something. Being aware of where your child is in relation to you, what they are doing near your holstered firearm, etc. eases nerves. I practice a few basic things to keep myself in the best positions possible when carrying. 1) wife is always on the left, children are always on the right. I am a left-hand shooter. If I need to draw, I can use my right hand to move my kids or my wife can side-step behind me to get to them. My wife can also draw from my left, as she's a righty so there's an advantage. 2) don't sit across from your children. Wife sits across from me, kid next to me and/or her. This way, should an emergency arise, she can be in control of what's in front of me. 3) practice code words. I use "I'm hot" for when I need to tell my wife I'm carrying in public, for example. We have no-gun zones in IL so if there's ever a time I see one and can't go in, I'll tell my wife I'm too hot to go in. This sounds weird, but to the casual listener, it's nonsense. She also says "red light" when she feel uncomfortable in a situation and that means "we're leaving". 4) I carry 24/7 when I'm allowed. I can't carry at work, but otherwise, I have one in my possession at all times. This gets me and keeps me comfortable with it and it gets engrained into my daily life. I feel naked without it. This is important for your children to see that this is a normal thing and it takes the mystery out of it. I've heard that children of gun owners either get super curious or they think it's completely lame. Either way, they'll know about it and how to handle.

My son is 2 and a half and knows daddy's gun is not a toy because he tells me when he's sees me put it on that verbatim. And yes I'm biased and think my kid is smart lol just curious, you said your kids do not have toy guns, my son has a marshmallow shooter and that's as close as he has to a toy gun but he sees me shoot at the range and of course wants to be like daddy so I was thinking some plastic pistols from Walmart maybe a good starter to practice not pointing at people and gun safety. Only because he's super smart of course. You're thoughts?

So, an awesome technique is to leave a realistic BB gun, unloaded, in a location and ask your child to retrieve something else from that location. If the child comes back and reports the gun, they get a reward. If not, then it's a teachable moment. Doing this at random frequencies helps promote and reenforce the concept of stop, don't touch, and tell an adult. After 10 successes, it can be assumed that your child understands. Continuing this until they are old enough that it becomes a "stupid game" is when you take it to the next steps...
