Neil & Kim: Great video! When I took Neil's CCW class 4+ years ago, he was still with a larger range/gun store and I was using a ,45 Auto H&K USP Compact with a leather holster. I have now transitioned to a 9mm S&W Shield and a raw dog hybrid holster. Keep up the good work.

My first handgun purchase, oh so many years ago, was a good old 1911, since we trained with these in the military. I get the idea of having over twice as many 9mm rounds, and I own a 9mm or few, but I carry the 1911 due to the sheer familiarity. We started my wife with the Glock 19 and had her get good with that before letting her mess with the single stack 9mm. And she did go to the range and take a class where they had the ladies shoot several different handguns to get a feel for the different styles. I watch people when at a store that sells guns, and I am seeing lots more new buyers, and it is too bad that the sales people are not sharing good advice like this video. Besides, if you start big, then you get to buy more guns to get to the carry size that you are comfortable with.

Great video I hope to someday come from county 41 to your county road get training from you.i just had a friend hell bent on purchasing a hi point because it was cheap then I told him I would take him to the gun shop on his day off where he fell in love with a ppq m2 and made the purchase.we haven’t went to the range for him to learn how to shoot it yet but we will be going very soon

I'd say Ruger should be mentioned in your popular gun brand list also? They make quite a variety of pistols. I have the SR1911 45 commander and the SR1911 9mm lightweight commander. I love Sig and Springfield too, glad they were in your list. Great video.

For a 1st purchase, would striker fired vs. hammer fired with DA/SA trigger be worth considering? I watched your dry fire practice drills video from March 31,2020. It was very good, but it didn’t have any sight stabilization with trigger control dry fire. For beginners, this is the first thing they should get good at. With striker fired, you have to rack the slide every time. With DA/SA, I never have to rack the slide for DA. For SA, I can thumb cock the hammer or use my support hand to cock the hammer. Both SA methods are more realistic as I can mostly maintain my presentation. Both are easier than racking. Easier means it’s more likely practice will happen. Very important for beginners.

Great post, I mostly agree with the practice part, out of my personal experience, lot’s of people with small hands had problems, to rack the slide on a (bigger) semi auto and felt more comfortable with a revolver. Anyway, it is a great idea to try several firearms before you buy one, also home defense or concealed carry is a difference . One of my concerns is always “ over penetration “ in self defence and I am surprised not even the NRA basic pistol class goes into the issue of fmj , jhp etc., 9mm are usually faster and can easily over penetrate, especially if they are not jhp. My personal home defence is either .45 jhp ( 1911 Commander)or concealed .380/9mm Short (9X17)jhp (Walther PPK/S, but again I haven’t found “The Holy Grail” . Keep up the good work !!!

*I have to say this is one of your better videos.* 3:39 into the video you mentioned "spring" can you please specify more about that? Because Springs can be updated, should they be updated? Then you have the argument about about what constitutes self-defense. Most of the time it's going to be within 20 feet, what is your intake on this? And too bad that we do have to buy a gun to defend ourselves.

My personal preference on ammo is .45acp but I'll carry anything from .380acp and up with confidence. I totally agree with you on 9mm for a first timer and I also totally agree with you on the size. Not only will a 9mm be easier to control but the cost per round is the lowest of all the major calibers too. As for buying used guns, I have no issues for me but I wouldn't necessarily send in a novice out. Most of the big companies do offer lifetime warranties that pass on to the new owner but many don't and if there's a problem, it's on the new owner. The best students, IMHO, are ladies! They not only pay attention but they retain their training and aren't afraid to ask questions unlike macho dudes. To any newbies, ask a gun friend and they will gladly take you to the range and help you. In fact, you'll probably make their week if you do!

My 2c on the revolver vs semi-auto debate: Try both and choose the one that you shoot best, because if you are misfortunate enough to have to use your handgun to defend yourself, if you miss with your first and possibly second shot, you're not going go get a chance to fire the other fifteen. By the way, no gun is going to deter a criminal if it's carried concealed. I realize that open carry is not an option everywhere, and not everyone is going to be comfortable carrying openly.

Wish I'de seen this 20 years ago when I bought my hand cannon. Learning to shoot my springfield .45 is a lifetime learning process. My second purchase was a used makarov 9mm and I was more accurate in 15 minutes than 10 years with the .45. I nearly cried when it was stolen. So ya, I agree- 9's are more popular for a reason.

My first centerfire sidearm was a Colt Trooper Mk III .357 Mag that my dad taught me how to use. At first, he had be shoot .38 Special target loads. That is a sweet combination! Now, moving from a .38 target to .357 is astonishing in terms of muzzle blast/flash and recoil. But with practice... Glocks are great, but snappy. I don't like the .40 S&W in a Glock; makes my hand numb after 50 rounds. The 10mm is even worse, but then again, it is more than the .40. The .45ACP in the 1911 is heavy and large, but the recoil, due to the mass of the sidearm, it is a combination that hits the sweet spot for me. Perfect fit in my hand too. A double stack 1911 is too fat. So..I have spent a lot of money on ammunition getting pretty good with it. Excellent video. :)

Shot placement is king. The biggest caliber you can consistently get hits where you want to hit is the one that is useful. As they said...doesn't help to miss with a cannon. The rest is environmental factors like how long you have to carry it, concealment or if it's for protection against dangerous animals so you need a more potent caliber. A double-stack .45 is a viable choice for self defense if one is trained with it. The main reason for a .45 is the easy use of a silencer since the regular ammo is subsonic. This is mainly for the algorithm and not to fuel caliber discussions.

I get the 9mm caliber war and why it's the best.. But what about the new Kel Tec CP33? Anyone who has ever been hit by a 22 long rifle has never killed the person who shot them. And the zero recoil, rapid fire capable, and huge mag sounds like it's a good option. The goal is to not die, as in, if they are shot they may flee, or you can flee after they are shot. But I get why 9mm is the most popular for everything else (AKA, goal is to put something 6ft under)

Under perfect situations you're 9mm points are pretty valid. However I would mention that since the pandemic hit 9mm has been almost impossible to find. 380 and 40 Cal are still available at most stores I've checked. It would be a good idea to have one on hand in a different caliber. On a different but related note I carry a 10mm because Kodiak Brown Bears are a thing in Alaska lol But yeah normally 9mm is probably the best option

As a women I have shot USPSA and IDPA matches for years. I have been to a number training class conducted by the best professional shooters. My draw to first shot isfaster with a revolver and follow up shots more accurate withu tee revolvers than with my Glocks. So I most often carry a revolver. What I give up is round count. I also enjoy shooting a revolver more than an auto. Because of round count the auto wins. I will say I have never broken a plastic sight on a Glock. I have replaced them with fiber optic night sights. I also believe in a good holster that fits me and how I am going to use it. I am always looking for ways to improve my speed and markmanship. I would study what you are teaching and see if it made a positive change toy time and scores.

A good summary. A small concealed pistol is tough to shoot well. It is expensive to buy a 2nd gun, but a better solution. I really feel revolvers. Anything smaller than a large revolver hurts! I'll admit it. My finger is my safety. From what I read, 30% of the time in a self defense situation, people forget the safety.

A 10 mm, long barrel. Google: Ted Nugent Hunting Glock. Somebody correct me if wrong but I think if you buy a Glock in caliber 40 S&W, a new barrel will allow shooting 10mm. The 40 is better for self defense (less recoil, less noise, less racking force).

Absolutely solid advice. My 1st handgun was a Kimber Rapide Black Ice 10mm. Great gun but when I killed an armadillo with my wife's Glock 19 at 40 yards, I realized my mistake. Higher capacity, easier to conceal, CHEAPER; I bought in the wrong order. After talking her into a Glock 43 (smart, huh?), now have TWO hanguns. PS. If had a gorgeous redhead queen like Kim, I'd probably be a better shooter. Great job, y'all!

Before you buy a gun go to a range test drive that specific model. Return home think about pros and cons do the same the next day and confirm. Then ask the experts and share your thoughts. After that I guess you are 80% ready to make your own decision. ΜΟΛΩΝ ΛΑΒΈ

Hi, my wife had cancer and has a lot of neuropathy. Her grip isn't what it used to be having lost a lot of touch sensitivity. She also seems to have some issues with her wrists; it may be arthritis (which she didn't have before the chemo). Not best, but not the worst. Ruger guns that are good... LCP 1 and 2 but it takes alot of practice. Great gun S&W M&P Sheild 9mm Sub Compact, also the compact and full size. Glock is good, but people need to be careful with them. Whatever you do, buy leather not plastic for a holster.

all bullets are dangerous. Even a .22 is deadly. AND .22s ARE the cheapest to shoot. but i do agree. 9mm are the best overall caliber

The caliber of the gun you buy is irrelevant, at least here in Columbus. You can't find any ammo in any caliber.

@@geaugafirearmsacademy I always enjoy your channel. Keep up the good work. Some of the new shooters out there really need help. I saw a guy at an indoor range "training" several of his kids. Turns out he was a new shooter, and was putting guns in the hands of teenagers who had zero training.
