In the early 90's in art school at University, we called this look eclectic. We were the geeks, punks and goths. The more contrasting and colourful the better, unless you were a Goth. Op shop shopping or what you call thrift shopping is where you would go to build an original wardrobe. We found awesome tweed jackets, velvet dresses and jackets:, Vintage boots and doc martins were the number one thing to wear and still is today. The animal print that has been reproduced on 50/s retro fashion today came from France. Girls wore poodle prints on their circle skirts, even the Eiffel Tower at one stage. Geek Chick is a great way to reintroduce what has already been done in a very cool way for today's generation. It is all very inspiring!. Thanks for sharing your analysis on this type of eclectic fashion, great video!.

Maree Pollen thank you and thanks for all the insight!!!! It’s so cool to hear others’ experiences with fashion and style through the decades. I was born in 1989 so I was too young to fully enjoy 90’s fashion. But it’s crazy because I feel like the last decade has been more about paying homage to previous decades’ styles. I mean, we see this wave of minimalism and sustainable clothing but I don’t necessarily see a distinguished style of the 2010-2020 decade. On a side note, your comment about the patterned shirts coming from France is very interesting to me!!! I’ll definitely be researching that topic!!

Elyssa awesome I’m glad you liked my comment. Your videos are very inspiring and informative. Thank you so much again. I do agree with you that fashion has not evolved since 2000 but in the last few years we are developing in the alternative and subculture communities. Rockabilly, cyber goth, even cosplay has influenced our fashion. The outcasts and the geeks will always be the ones to create fashion trends in the mainstream. Have a great day!.🌸💜

Loved your analysis here and didn’t even recognize before what a huge influence geek chic is for me. I will respectfully wind you back even a few more decades to the intentional and ironic use of geek chic in the 1980s. I feel that it came out of the punk aesthetic, because it was a way of symbolically addressing the jocks and cheerleaders who accused one of being a geek, “Yes I’m a geek and I’m proud of it.” If Morrissey of the Smiths was not the spearhead of it, he was at least its icon, as he would perform in the heavy black-frame glasses, dress shirt, and clunky hearing aid, all the while declaring himself celibate

I inadvertently dressed like this in my teens/early twenties, cuz my entire wardrobe came from the thrift store, and I ended up having to pull outfits out of random prints and patterns. I often pulled it all together with a blazer and belt, and Mary Janes or Pointy flats

Very well done. Thank you. I’m 51, but look like in my 30’s because of a healthy lifestyle mentally and physically. I have friends of all ages, including many in the 60 and 70’s. From my older friends, they tell me the feelings and passions are the same as in their youth, except that physically the body is aging as it should be. I just finally realize from this video my style has always been Geeky Chic! From this video, now I am more confident to do dress it even better. Think of Betsy Johnson. My friends and I saw her a few years ago at Dillards. I asked her to do her signature split pose with us. She’s in her 70s.

Overall, I'm not a big fan of the geek chic style. It has nothing to do with me, except in one thing: As a fan of various I.P.s, mainly movie franchises, I do like to find ways to make a nod to them in a very subtle, elegant but still cool way. But that is the big challenge! Usually, everything you find, merch related, is very in your face. As much as I like to honor the things I like, I don't enjoy being a walking billboard... 😅 I feel that guys can more easily get away with wearing, for example, printed t-shirts. I feel like, in girls there's some feminity, sofistication, that gets lost... It's hard to get the best of both worlds... Or maybe it's just me, a typical Soft Classic easily thrown off balance... 😅 Anyways, great video! Keep going! I'd love to see a video on a sporty chic/street style aesthetic, because I'm a sucker for comfortable and practical! And guess what's comfortable and practical (besides pajamas, of course 😜): SPORTS' CLOTHES!

This aesthetic is super cute, especially with the cats hehe. I'd love to also see a dark academia style analysis- I think it's more serious looking but it's quite structured from all the looks I've been seeing online and as a soft natural, I've kinda been struggling to incorporate dark academia into my everyday style.

My style has been geek chic for years (mostly because of thrifting) but lately I got tired of it and started my slow journey towards a more minimalist and streamline aesthetic. I'm in my 30s and a lot has changed in my life over the past years so now I feel more mature and have less patience with unnecessary details and tiresome prints. Although I'm not trying to incorporate this aesthetic into my style but rather to purge it as it doesn't speak to me anymore (plus I realised I'm a classic body type and simple clean clothes do look better on me), I still enjoyed this analysis and your attention to details.

@@elyssa_aesthetic Agreed I'm a nerdy/ vintage style kinda gal who has always wanted to dress like a gamine... But as I moved into my thirties and came terms with my soft dramatic lines I've found that I can take an element out of the look to simplify, wear a wide leg trouser where a gamine would wear something cropped and fitted, wear mixed patterns in matching colors instead of contrast. I really appreciate this analysis because it did separated the aesthetic from the kibbie type it is often paired with and help me to recontexulize the elements of it within my own lines.

Have you considered making a video about styling curly/coily/afro-textured hair for the different Kibbe types?
@rdpcl4 жыл бұрын
I tried to be geek chic, but I lacked enough intent. I gravitated towards preppy style, but just one argyle sweater or one plaid wool skirt weren't enough to make an outfit. I settled on the Napoleon Dynamite look, with graphic tees as the main part and a few Sailor Moon themed earrings and selected pieces. Years ago I found a Sailor Moon cardigan at Hot Topic that's not whimsical and actually works outside the geek style.

Think about it… in another 5 years, you’ll be considered a geek for wearing skinny jeans. These days trends come and go so quickly. I admire the geek chic style for it’s quickly elements and the vintage inspiration. Out of all the styles, I find this one creates a lot more individuality. Maybe it’s because so much vintage items are practically one of a kind these days, or maybe it’s because what someone is a “geek” about varies so much that they can stick to key elements of geek chic but make it their very own too. It’s beautiful
@ElaBlu32 жыл бұрын
This is basically my asesthetic as I was very much a geek growing up. And watching shows like Big Bang Theory in my youth validated my natural awkward geekiness. I also very much gravitated towards vintage fashion. I now dance swing so love 1950s styles. I hope people who chose this aesthetic do it because they identify with being a geek or being awkward. I do feel annoyed if you have no connection to geek culture and just adopted this aesthetic for no reason.
@sussie98954 жыл бұрын
I didn’t realize that my style has a geek chic undercurrent.. I just wish you chose more modern photos - most of those styles scream early 2010’s twee and feel so unstylish (in a bad way).
