Place a warrior in any clearing with a roost whose suit matches the card suit. *Move. Move at least one warrior from any clearing whose suit matches the card suit.* Battle. Initiate a battle in any clearing whose suit matches the card suit. Build. Place a roost in any clearing you rule whose suit matches the card suit and which has no roost. *This means you have to move FROM the suit of the card in the decree, meaning you would have fallen into turmoil right there and then on your first move!!!*

But I say trudge through a game and watch this video and then try again. And then change factions and play again. In regards to the mistakes in this video, I do agree the creators should post in the description comments highlighting these, so we can learn correctly. But amazing that they made and edited this video. It still very much helped us.
@TheButtonLoop6 жыл бұрын
Yeah, a lot of rules mistakes here. The main one is that when the Eyrie adds a card to its decree, the suit of that card dictates in which clearing the action has to occur. So, for example, Becca should have gone into turmoil on the first turn, because her move card said she had to move from a Mouse clearing, but the only clearing she occupied was a Bunny clearing. Then later she had to build in a Bunny clearing (without a roost) but she didn't occupy a clearing that fit that. She treated all cards in her decree as wilds (like bird cards). A couple other I caught were the Woodland Alliance has to spend an extra supporter to put a Sympathy token in a clearing with 2 or more warriors from a single faction. So the WA's first placement of a Sympathy token was incorrect.
@TheButtonLoop6 жыл бұрын
Adding as I go... If a WA sympathy token is destroyed, they get a card into their supporter stack matching the clearing it was destroyed in from their attacker's hand. If the attacker doesn't have it, they show the WA their hand and the WA gets a card from the deck. They do not get to choose a card from their attacker's hand. Also, all Sympathy added to the board after the first one must be adjacent to another Sympathy.
@TheButtonLoop6 жыл бұрын
The only pieces that contribute towards ruling a clearing are Buildings and Warriors. Circular tokens like the WA's Sympathy or the Marquise's Wood do not contribute towards rule.
@TheButtonLoop6 жыл бұрын
When the WA gains cards from getting their Sympathy destroyed or enemy warriors moved into clearings with a Sympathy token, those cards go directly into their supporter stack, not their hand.
@TheButtonLoop6 жыл бұрын
When a faction crafts, it can only use each of it's crafting vehicles once per turn. (the marquise crafts 2 cards requiring 5 total mouse crafting ability, but only has 3 mouse workshops)
@TheButtonLoop6 жыл бұрын
No non-cat pieces may be placed in the clearing with the Keep, however, pieces may be Moved into that clearing. The keep can be attacked and earns the player that destroys it 1 VP like any other destroyed building or token.

Understand your comments here. I'm on the fence on this one, because we know how hard it is to do rules videos, especially something like Roots with thick rule book (comes with the territory of war games). We did rule video for Root, already about one hour long! After carefully checking the rules, still found a couple of mistakes. A lot of detailed rules, asymetric power, video took probably 10 hours to film, plus editing, learning etc. Again, not trying to defend anyone here 😀

@@MeepleUniversity What do you mean by a thick rule book? Without the expansion, it's only 9 pages, which is basically nothing by the standards of the war game. Dave using revolt to attack in fox territories long after the fox base was built. Becca's often cited misuse of the decree actions.. seriously, how do you NOT win when you are cheating with the birds that hard? Gina should not have been able to win that turn due to supply line restrictions. The also ignored the rule that the birds rule on a tie and that the cats can save killed units by playing a card. To all those who say "Who cares? People make mistakes." A lot of people care. It ruins the enjoyment of the game to watch it played so incorrectly. At the very least put annotations in the video explaining the things that were played wrong. Even Achievement Hunter has a rules expert on hand to catch mistakes, and they are video game channel. Becca is the one teaching the game at the beginning, she should know how to play. They play a learning game before they film. They should be catching mistakes before the real game.

@@NeilBlaiberg When the Eyrie play out their decrees, bird cards and other cards are different. Bird cards are a sort of joker cards, as they can work on any and all clearings. Unlike for example a mouse card, that only works with the mice clearings. So building your decree with bird cards makes it a lot more flexible. The two starting viziers count as bird cards. But it also means you fall harder when it all topples, and every bird card in there loses you VP. Or you can build with a lot of fox cards etc. The things you can do is more limited, like recruit in specifically a fox clearing, or move into/out of a fox clearing. I have a few questions that have come up for me while playing. I am a newbie: - Can I revolt anytime and anywhere? In this game, a base has already been established in a fox glade and yet revolt has been made on the field. I thought you can only revolt once per class if there is no base yet. Or can you revolt at any time to eliminate enemies, but you can only build one base per class? In other words, if I already have a fox base, can I only revolt on rabbit and mouse locations? Can I only revolt a total of 3 times if my opponents don't destroy my bases? - The Vagabond player has flipped the teapot and bag a few times for his quests. Wouldn't that have required him to put these items in his pouch until he refreshed them the next turn? Wouldn't that have even caused him problems with his carrying capacity? - A dominance card is visible in the margin for all to see. If I know my opponent wants to use it, couldn't I just take it beforehand and keep it or not play it to block it? The alliance could, for example, put the dominance card with its supporter and block it for the rest of the game? Or are you forced to play a dominance card when you trade it?
@lincolnnorfor30022 жыл бұрын
1. no you can only revolt where you do not have a base yet, yes you can only revolt on rabbit and mouse locations if you already have a fox base. 2. not sure about the question in general, however, when you refresh items, you refresh it according to this sequence: teapot -> satchel -> then everything inside the satchel 3. a dominance card can be spent for its suit (i.e. can be put into the WA supporters) however, after it is used, it does not get discarded but it goes face up near the map to show that it is AVAILABLE to be activated and taken. if the WA decides not to use that dominance card and leaves it in his supporter stack, then he technically can "block" it from being used for the rest of the game.

This is a wargame (despite the cute exterior). "mean" play and table-talk is pretty much par for the course. If it's the optimal play, begrudging the player for taking it is rather absurd. Think about it from a player's perspective. If you have a strong card and no one knows about it (or questions it), you should hide it for maximum impact when you use it. If someone else has a strong card, you should warn the table so that other players attack and hinder that player instead of you.

This looks to be a good game. Much variety and replay value. Not only are there four, plus expansion, sides to play which are all different, but you should want to play some again to see if you can win with that side. Many comments state that a lot of rules were broken during play in this video. They do not state which, or how. My question is, does the actual rules make the game any less or more fun than how they played it in the video?
@zackmyers8056 жыл бұрын
Becca's very first turn broke rules. The decrees are determined by the suite of the card used. Her using a mouse card on the move and then the bunny card on the build meant she could only move from a mouse clearing (although I thought that includes a to but everyone else has been harping it's only from) and build in a ruled bunny clearing. Becca therefore could not have moved from her starting location or built her new roost in the bunny clearing. Therefore, two of her decree on her first turn were undoable and she would have lost her turn. A lot of the rules broken were tied to the balance of the game. It wouldn't make it less fun per se, but it makes it harder for some groups to win fairly.

"Learning new tabletop games can be a challenge. On Game the Game, Becca Scott teaches you and plays new board games with fun guests each week." It seems that this show itself is not up to the challenge of learning new games. If you advertise the show as a way to teaching + play through, then for the love of all that is good, don't make so many glaring rules mistakes. At the very least, have an editor go over the game and add a note saying "hey, we messed up this rule, but we were consistent about it so be aware of it". The galling thing is that these failures were not some weird edge cases that happens rarely, but something crucial to the factions (such as how eyrie's decree works, how cat's wood can be connected, and how alliance's supporter decks and sympathy tokens work). You can do much better than this. In fact, channels with far smaller budgets indeed do much better than this.

First all the game-breaking rule mistakes in Betrayal Legacy (which have now likely changed the outcomes of several haunts) and now the many mistakes here, including the big one of playing all Eyrie decree cards as wilds... I love the show, but you guys really do need to have someone checking the rules. At the very least, you should have rule corrections on-screen like in Tabletop.. but it's a lot more helpful if you also have a person watching and interrupting if a mistake is made real-time.

Davis got screwed over with the rules, Becca cheated a ridiculous amount, treating everything like birds, Gina won with cheating during her last turn, and i felt like Poisal was trying his best to keep them all straight with rules but it just wasn't possible. Also, it felt like Gina and Becca just suffocated everyone else on the table because they were constantly meowing at eachother and speaking over Davis.

I banned open drinks from the gaming table as well. Bottles are okay or glasses next to the table. Some of my friends made fun of this but this is less awkward than the question who is going to pay for the 150€ in damage if you spill your coke over the entire table, and most games cost that much with expansions these days...

i mean it gets the idea across, which is what this channel is there for. New players get the gist of the game. experienced players will probably go somewhere else for actual strategy help if needed. i bought it partially because of this video. now it hurts my eyes watching the mistakes yes,but the vid did fulfill its purpose.

I wish this was not one of my first stops for rules on Root. The number of core game mechanic mistakes literally broke the gameplay. I had to unlearn so many bad practices before I taught it to my friends! I honestly think this should be taken down and re-shot. It really is that bad.

All these "cheating" comments. Geez. I do not believe she was being dishonest in her rules goofs. It is for entertainment. Besides that, she didn't even win, albeit, she did come close. I've even seen Tabletop episodes with rules goofs and other instructional videos where they had to add notes about messing up rules.

Well, many pointed out the rule mistakes... It started with the Eyrie's first turn already and their added mouse card to the Move section in the Decree, which would have meant she has to move warriors from a mouse clearing to an adjacent clearing. But since all warriors were in the rabbit clearing, it would have fallen apart already that moment... I didn't watch any further (yet).
@isaacsmith3998 Жыл бұрын
Was really excited to see gameplay but was disappointed to see the very first bird turn be played incorrectly. As others have pointed out, actions must correspond to the suite in their decree, meaning the very first turn would have broken the decree... There are a lot of rules in root, but I do wish the team had reviewed them a bit more before playing. This is a very basic rule that *hugely* impacts the game.

EEK the amount of rules broken in the Alliance’s first turn was hard to watch, please check the verbiage of the board before letting an overconfident player assume a heavy lead early on because they aren’t totally sure what the nomenclature means. They ended the turn with 5 victory points, but only should’ve scored 2. The first sympathy placed gets +0 points, the next two placed get +1 each. All the supporters spent to spread those three sympathy tokens get DISCARDED and the Alliances turn basically ends. At no point do supporters return to your hand, ever. Along with giving him +1 VP without looking at his board for the first sympathy spread, he also wouldn’t have been able to craft in his first round since he starts with all his cards in his supporter stack meaning never would’ve been able to score the +2 for the sword.

I am preparing to play this game at a convention this weekend. In preparation, I read the Learn to Play rule book and wanted to supplement that with a video of the gameplay. After reading the comments about how many rules were missed/wrong, I'm going to stop watching because I don't want to learn the game incorrectly.

Eh, new players play Marquise poorly pretty much always. It's hard to realize how action starved you are when it's your first time. The rules mistakes were a much bigger problem. They would have benefitted from following the Walk Through guide.

Uhhhh, I just got this game and played last night with some friends. It’s complicated, so I’d figure I’d watch a reputable source for a “how to” to confirm some things. So many things were wrong during the first turn… I guess it doesn’t matter, but still… Would have expected more from geek and sundry. Wouldn’t recommend this for learning specifics, but they do a good job of going thru each faction and playing thru.

Hey I know this is an old comment, but you can move if you rule the clearing you are moving from even if you don't rule the place you move to. She still can't do it because it violates her decree though, and she would immediately turmoil.
