Conceptually, can you imagine how badass it would be to summon that Stormtide Leviathan? Just standing there then you make an incantation then all the sudden an earth shaking bellowing noise comes from the ocean, then woosh! A gigantic monster that dwarfs the town you are in with a tidal wave that floods every land for miles and miles. And that's just how he makes an entrence. And then someone uses "Smite the monstrous" or something then the lands all dry up with happy flowers.

He said he was doing it in response. Which means he does it before the spell resolves so if he had that card the -1/-1 would have resolved first before the +1/+1 and hexproof so the rhino would have been a 6/6 hexproof and merely died

Wow that Leviathan card is straight up broken. Does everyone have to run direct removal to counter that stuff?
@Gruncival10 жыл бұрын
Leviathan has been around for several core sets and has never been a star in any of them. At 8 mana to play, with no innate anti-removal ability, it is only really reasonable in a budget Simic deck. Direct removal *is* a staple of most good decks, but the reason Leviathan doesn't shine is because a blue player saving for 8 mana can be easily punished.
@singami46510 жыл бұрын

@Jalathas10 жыл бұрын
Yagi It's crap because it's EXPENSIVE and dies to removal.
@singami46510 жыл бұрын
Jalathas That was kind of a Magic meme. If something dies to removal, it has to do something immediately/have some other form of card evasion (ie. tokens) or just be ridiculously cost effective. Cheap cards that trade equally with removal are also good. The rest is crap, because Wizards can't into removal design.
@Gruncival10 жыл бұрын
Yagi I wouldn't come to the same conclusion. Cheap direct removal is a counterbalance to large-body creatures. Cheap cards that trade well for the cost of removal (and anti-removal abilities) are counterbalances to direct removal. Large-body creatures are a good counterbalance to cheap creatures. Obviously, this isn't the only rock-paper-scissors balance cycle in Magic, and there's nuance around this one I'm sure you could come up with, but in general, the main balance issue that Wizards has is that Blue has slight overrepresentation in both pro deck composition and winning pro deck composition (which really means that reducing the randomness of your own deck is the most powerful mechanic.)

JCarlosFFAF yup its an insane card in that format, Those decks arent reliable on any card because I don't think there is any x4 in there. So the chances of getting a removal to deal with leviathan is almost impossible. So strong.
@IceMaverick1310 жыл бұрын
JCarlosFFAF Even top-decking that Island only brought him to 7, it wasn't legal to play the Leviathan when he did. Only after he top-decked the Swamp the turn after would he have been able to play it. Sean still would've won in the end, because with the cards played Josh could've dealt 6 damage on the turn the Leviathan dropped, bringing Sean down to 3, but then the Leviathan would've legally dropped the next turn and he still would've won barring the fact that the next card in Josh's deck by the end of the game wasn't removal.
@MakooWallinen10 жыл бұрын
IceMaverick As some other guys point out, if you look closely on the editing through out that, he actually had enough mana they just made it look as if he did not have it pretty much. It happens when you try to cut out the boring stuff. But I am not going to say it was like that or not. But there might be something that we just havent see. But still. he would have lost so even if a mistake was made nothing else could have happened anyway :)
@IceMaverick1310 жыл бұрын
Markus Wallin I'll have to see if I can fetch my long analysis, but I broke down that part of the video and looking at how many cards he draws and how many he has in his hand at the start and the end of each turn, I proved that it was physically impossible for him to have played the Leviathan when he did because he would HAVE to have played 2 mana on one turn at some point. Even though the editing jumps around and more mana appears over time, there's one moment where it cuts back and he has an extra land on the board, isn't missing a card from his hand, and he had already played a mana at the start of that turn. I had thought it wouldn't have mattered if Sean had waited an extra turn to play it (since we know he top-decks a swamp on the next turn), because I'm sure he'd still have won, but somebody else brought to my attention recently the equip cards on the field, combined with that extra turn Sean would had to have given to his opponent, would have likely dealt enough damage to kill him. It is possible that this foul-play resulted in Sean winning the match when he shouldn't have.

18:05 Sean has 6 mana then next turn he plays the Stormtide Leviathan with only 7 mana? Or did I mis something? xD
@IceMaverick1310 жыл бұрын
You missed a little detail that was probably hard to catch if you weren't looking for it. Since the play is kinda casual he likely just did it lightly out of order (i.e. he forgot to mana THEN play it, but it's still valid because he has the mana in hand and legal to play), but he dropped another black mana already tapped down after the fact. When his next turn starts he has 8 untapped mana on the board illustrated by about 20:15. Edit: That actually only explains how he got from 7 to 8. Idk when he went from 6 to 7. Edit: Yeah upon further review, at most he could only have had 7 mana on the turn he played the Leviathan, he had three cards the turn before, he drew one from the Rogue's Gloves and one from his turn starting. The extra island he gained must have been one of the cards he drew and they just didn't show it on camera because when we next see him, there's an additional island and he still has 4 cards. At that point he has 7 mana and could not simply play the eighth one after because he already played an island that turn. I think for once, a misplay actually slipped by the crew of like 5 people on set watching for errors in gameplay.

@noahmidzinski10856 жыл бұрын
Break Monster Lifelink doesn't target the rhino, it is on Ob Nixilis. And it's a static affect so it works anyway.
@arvorus11106 жыл бұрын
Break Monster did say Ob Nixilis, not the rhino. But yes, they are wrong (It doesn't have anything to do with lifelink being a static effect, though). Ranger's Guile can't target an opponent's creature anyways, but even if it could, it wouldn't prevent the lifelink from happening, because hexproof only cares about the controller of the creature, not the one who gives it. Sean is the controller of Ob Nixilis, so giving it hexproof would only prevent Jovenshire from targeting it.
@fieldy4096 жыл бұрын
Yeah hexproof means enemy spells and abiliities its different to being unable to be targeted by spells and abilities

That's not how lifelink works. Josh should've won after his 4/3 haste creature did 4 damage. Game state is checked before lifelink is triggered, and Sean is already dead. Damage resolves at the same time (unless it's first strike). Am I missing something?

It used to be a triggered ability until Magic 2010, and before then you would be correct. Now it's static, and both damage and healing happen before priority is declared.
@JCarlosFFAF10 жыл бұрын
nope. You're wrong. It's when the damage dealt by the creature with lifelink is done, you assign damage to the creatures and then to the players. So it's correct how they showed in the video. Very good match btw!

You can see when he use Divination that he just says that he pass turn without playing his land that he draws, but then next turn has it in play. They just do it to speed it up, cut some "boring parts" like playing lands. No cheating.
@soulseek210 жыл бұрын
Henrik Tegman how are they "speeding" it up by skipping a landdrop which takes about a second... in my eyes this is sloppy editing if anything and in this case the one mysterious extra mana was either way off to the side (which is kind of hard to believe judging from the otherwise nicely stacked lands) or he was in fact cheating his way to victory. as ***** aldready said the turn prior you can clearly see that he has 6 lands so unless they skipped 2 landdrops this is impossible. and even then he layed down the leviathan before playing the extra land... so .... well mistakes happen.. but i guess it was to make for a more interesting finish with a glorious comeback (for whatever reason)
@reklom233410 жыл бұрын
soulseek2 may I just add. that watchin the beginning again. They skip Sean putting down his lands since turn 2. (obviously you can see it's been put down when he casts something that turn) So, I guess if you add all those cuts then you get a pretty decent amount of cut time.

@simplex127610 жыл бұрын
As M3ment0Mori and IceMaverick pointed out, lifelink is no longer a triggered ability, but a static one, which has its effects applied before State Based Actions are checked (such as checking if a player's life total fell to 0 or less). This means this match was decided by a change in the ruleset, which is pretty cool.

Ok so I saw the thing everyone pointed out with the Stormtide Leviathan but I think Sean should've lost the game earlier anyway. Now I'm not entirely sure but at 16:50 shouldn't the 4 damage from the giant have happened at the same time as the lifelink which would mean he would hit 0 before he gained the 7 life?

As always, a lot of fun. But whenever the guys were talking one on one to the camera, I had the impression the cameraman was also balancing on a unicycle. Damn that camera moved a lot.
