For those wondering about the Two-Player Clash Pack they're using, it's a new product that came out with Magic 2015 Core Set. I watched the Spellslingers episodes with Josh Barnett & Felicia Day, and actually won a game against my husband later that night. I had a much easier time playing a green/red deck. I wanna thank you for designing this show to be easily understood by new players like me. Your show is more encouraging than intimidating. As a beginner player, what I appreciate most about the show is that it does a generally good job of showing how to use the decks. This episode in particular was excellent. It moved much quicker despite being a longer episode, and it is a great showcase acknowledging that if a player knows the cards and the mechanics, it can be really invigorating to watch. @trysephiroth00710 жыл бұрын
By doing it at the end of the turn, Sean isn't able to just recast it.
@PIZZLEdeTWIZZLE10 жыл бұрын

Since Sean didn't cast anything before attacking he could have re-played the creature in the second main phase and have the mana open on the next turn. By bouncing it in the end phase, he saved one round of damage and made Sean waste mana on the next turn. At least that's what I think.
@trysephiroth00710 жыл бұрын
PIZZLEdeTWIZZLE He also may have some sort of pump effect mid combat. Then LSV would of returned it and made him waste a card.

Day[9] and Geek and Sundry-- I'm a huge fan of yours. I love all your dailies (especially Monday) and all your SC2 wisdom. It was your hilarious humor that got me into Starcraft. However, I have always loved Magic and it was the first true game I played. Spellslingers is by far the favorite thing that you do. I have watched and will continue to watch every episode of Spellslingers. A dream of mine is to play on Spellslingers and it's something I have wanted to for a long time. I'm pretty sure you guys film in California and I live there. I am an expert on magic and I like to think of myself as a pretty funny guy, so I think I could make the show more fun. I'm really glad that they decided to use quality decks instead of the shitty decks they normally use. Really shows you how intense and close most magic games are. However, I think that the decks are not balanced very well - Fury is much more resilient than the Fate deck.
@chronoflect10 жыл бұрын
I agree. Hopefully, they will keep upping the quality and maybe even use some top-tier decks in the future.
@roxannekrogh422810 жыл бұрын
chronoflect I'd doubt they want to do that. It seems they want this series to be more for newer players, so using the shitty cards/Pre-cons gives them more access to the game. Rather than having to buy singles and spend tons of money on a Teir 1 deck, they can just go down to their LGS and buy one of these clash packs with a friend, having just as much fun.
@mycroftism10 жыл бұрын
chronoflect LSV vs Day[9] next season using LSV's decks would be hilarious, but would immediately lose most of the non-magic players.
@TheHomemadeStrength10 жыл бұрын
***** I don't think you'd immediately lose non magic players simply by using competitive decks. The biggest key with this show is the pacing. They go slow and explain everything they are doing. Watching pros happens too fast for normal people and we have no idea what is happening since we don't know what all the cards do. I feel like they could definitely splash in some more top level decks in the coming seasons (since season 2 is already filmed) as long as they keep the same slow pace. Also, games can't be ending in 5 turns so they need decks that will produce a match that they can make last for 20 minutes.
@xxhellspawnedxx10 жыл бұрын
***** I don't think so. With a good-enough production, players using really eldritch cards can still be entertaining to newbies/non-magic players. But I also think that this show is sponsored by Wizards of the Coast, and that they'd want him to promote what they can sell to the larger group of customers. They have no direct gain in the second hand market. Thus they'd want him to promote what they do sell directly, i.e. these pre-constructed decks.

He was waiting to see if Day9 would play anything bigger post combat. Since he didn't, he bounced it at the end step. If he bounced it during combat, Day9 would have just replayed it. Bouncing at the end step is a bigger tempo swing because it stops him from using any of his mana and he still prevents damage because the creature won't be in play to attack the next turn.

Most of the pre-constructed decks are really awful. Watching LSV play something like a Splinter Twin deck in the Modern format is such a different experience than these videos, but it takes a long time to understand the cards and how they interact with each other. Standard is a good format to watch so you can get a good idea of what some of the more powerful and interesting things that can happen, while still being the least complex.

KRivera I reckon it must just be because attacking with eight 8/8 hydras must feel sick. That, and he may not have been aware of the potential for something like Aetherspouts. I don't think either of them knew what was in the decks.

I also think that since this is like a "Tutorial match?" they even tell what they have in their hand to the camera while the other guys is literally near him.

KRivera FYI, as someone who has helped produce interview videos for stuff like this before, all of the to the camera stuff cut in between the gameplay is entirely done after the fact. You have them look slightly off camera and say "Okay, so talk about when Sean did (insert what Sean did here)." Source: I work in PR video production.

+imjustsomeguy72 even not knowing what was in the decks, attacking with all hydras was clearly the wrong move. there is no need to do 64 dmg when 32 will still win the game, you are just unnecessarily risking all the hydras to a possible combat trick (you are playing against blue after all)

+S. Wunderlin you would still have hydra for next turn.

Great game and I am glad to have found this series! Thanks Sean & Luis! One thing I wondered about while watching was: Why did Luis not Block and Tap with one and the same Kiora's Follower instead of the one that wasnt blocking? I think it didnt matter in the end since he didnt need the other one but he could still do it or did they change the MTG rules? I thought it would be more useful to tap a blocking/dying creature and therefore maybe show this to new players? Just asking, I dont want to lecture anyone ;)

Well, that was really an exciting match, but Sean just had the game after that turn. As much as I rooted for fate, he just turned the tide wonderfully. I'm just thinking, if you bounce a creature after the monstrosity cost is paid, wouldn't it be an actual way to counter the ability?
@CalloftheWarrior110 жыл бұрын
Correct, bouncing the creature with monstrosity on the stack will stop the trigger.
@Galtran10 жыл бұрын
depends on the monstruosity, on the Hydra not really, you'd just give him a chance to spawn a whole new bunch of hydras...
@CalloftheWarrior110 жыл бұрын
That goes for any monstrosity, though, bouncing it will stop it for a turn at least. =].

The ability still triggers if it's able to.
@TirelessSlacker10 жыл бұрын
anatole69 The abilities read "When this creature becomes monstrous". So if you respond to the monstrosity activation (i.e. before the creature actually becomes monstrous), then the creature is no longer on the battlefield, does not become monstrous, and the monstrous ability does not trigger.
