This arc 👌 is nothing if not a great example of the sheer audacious luck Scanlan can have in making the impossible happen. Turning into a dinosaur, setting a house on fire, likely getting a Goliath noble killed, saving his friend from a shadow demon. All in a relatively short span of time.

I mean it was a core element of Percy, and I suspect removing the curse and what not was a planned arc for Percy that Talisen knew was coming and Matt had spent hours on..... and Sam just used console commands and roleplayed that arc away.

Breaking Matt, or his plans, one of my many favorite things with these guys. Matts breaking himself and everyone by breaking wind however..... having watched C2 first and only stopped once the plauge caused a hiatus, and being more used to the refined and highly profesional nature of the production (Sam being Sam aside), was extra special for me. Matt broke an epic scene by farting, making it all the better, then after a bit he went right back to it.

I'm late but the Pepperbox seemed pretty cursed also. Cursed objects have a habit of affecting their owners in profound ways. His attachment to the gun may have been a result of Orthax's lingering influence, in which case he roleplayed perfectly by being extremely upset over its destruction while still being in denial of the real reason why he doesn't want it torched.

@Ben Edit: comment assumed you were referring to a different roll. I have been corrected. Sorry! Original comment: Not quite. That was a contested roll, not a saving throw with DC - Scanlan's Charisma(Persuasion) roll vs Percy's Wisdom(Insight) roll. According to the PHB, "If the contest results in a tie, the situation remains the same as it was before the contest." (page 174). That said, the situation remaining the same would mean Percy would keep the Pepperbox. However, there's a lot of home rules about how nat 20s work (as well as nat 1s) - Matt may be following one that gives the person who rolled a nat 20 victory in a contest ending in a draw, just by virtue of it being their best possible roll. Some groups take it way too far, making nat 20s cause successes at an absurd level, like say "I want to use my tinker tools to build a cell phone" and the natural 20 means the person in an otherwise medieval world has a cell phone, but the more modest alteration that a nat 20 wins a tie is, in my view, a fair ruling. It's also entirely probable that Matt was trying to orchestrate the destruction of the gun to get rid of Orthax, and bent the rules slightly. DM privilege.

Only TWO barrels. The other barrels weren't enchanted at all. So the enchantments didn't stack. By Pathfinder rules, the cost would probably around 6.3K gp.

Okay, I need to talk about Vax and Keyleth. That moment by the Sun Tree was so lovely, /including/ all the silence and hesitation - because that silence was important. It was indicative of Vax's patience, and his refusal to act selfishly in that moment. Even though he's making himself extremely emotionally vulnerable, he doesn't pressure Keyleth in any way; he just lets her know that he's sincere, and then gives her as much time and space as she needs to process her own feelings - whatever they may be. The kiss in the other episode worked great as a dramatic, heat-of-the-moment confession, but it's this scene here that properly demonstrates how gentle and understanding his affection for her is. And that's really beautiful. (Also, everyone else's reactions are priceless.)

Marisha knows exactly how keyleth would react just like how Liam knows exactly what Vax would say and how we would react to her reasponde. I know it may seem that way and I imagine it is a little of that...I mean come on, we ALL watched the scene, it was a little awkward 😂. But it’s really them both being excellent actors role playing

@@zacharygadzinski3147 As I recall the only requirements are that you are able to cast the appropriate spell for the enchantment and can acquire/pay for the materials needed. I don't remember anything about having to be a full fledged spell caster.......... though most enchantments need higher level spells i think, so you'd be limited in that regard. (can't find my rulebook to check it as well, though I know anyone who can cast a spell is considered a "caster" regardless of the source)

The way he seems to play, he probably had a few possibilities. He obviously kept Orthax's mini and stats around, "just in case" Percy managed to force him out somehow. Matt probably envisioned it happening from the party taking him to a high-level cleric to exorcise him someday, but looks like a nat 20 WIS save was good enough in his book. In my college campaign, I had a major antagonist traveling with the party, masquerading as a druid permanently shapechanged into a sparrow. She was basically the party healer and quest giver, being helpful and adorable and giving them directions around the mysterious island they'd shipwrecked on. In reality she was an ancient copper dragon, using the party to kill off all her enemies in hopes of winning a thousand-year feud with an ancient green dragon who also lived on the island. One of the party members ended up finding out her secret, and I ran a solo session with him where she kidnapped him in the night and they had an epic duel. She ended up killing him, and he was willing to roll a new character because he loved where the story was going (best player ever). From the next group session on to the end of the campaign over a year later, he NEVER revealed the secret, and when the party found the "sparrow druid" near death the next morning, weeping over their dead comrade's acid-burned and destroyed body, claiming the evil green dragon who ruled the island did it, the player never broke pokerface and out-of-character only talked about fighting "the dragon," never about *who* the dragon was. The eventual big reveal was absolutely amazing and reminded me why I love D&D so dang much. All this to say, yes, Matt probably had a multitude of options and conjectures about the fate of Orthax and the Pepperbox, but if he loves D&D as much as I understand it as a DM myself, he never had any "plan" set in stone. I was fully willing to let my own plans go "up in smoke" if that player had killed the dragon himself (even granted him a bunch of BS special abilities in the battle to even the odds, and he just barely lost). That thrill of possibility is one of the most exciting things for a DM.

Yeah, you basically have no choice but to meta-game when you play someone with an intelligence that would prevent you from even having normal speech patterns. I personally feel that meta-gaming when it's just making plans and talking about tactics between players is fine - it's using outside knowledge and the characters "noticing" stuff that they simply shouldn't or "randomly" running in the right direction, even if their character didn't detect anything, when I start having problems.

@@Hall1bd Sometime it can be freeing to have a character that nobody EXPECTS to make decisions, or has an excuse for acting foolish. I have a yaun-ti warlock with a wisdom of 8. We found a snake throne in a dungeon. As yaun-ti are snake people, I sat in the throne. It was a poison trap as I (the player) thought it might be. Luckily for my character, yaun-ti are IMMUNE to poison damage. Now, if my character HADN'T been immune to poison, I may not have had her sit in the throne. But her low wisdom was a good excuse to do what I wanted her to do and have a bit of fun. Her warlock patron is a Great Old One, so I see her impulsive behavior as an initial sign of possible insanity.

The vax/keyleth thing is so underrated. Yeah, it seemed awkward, but it was supposed to be that way. Keyleth had been utterly caught off guard by the entire thing and the low-charisma character she is wouldn’t really know how to deal with it. It was very reminiscent of an awkward high school crush-except for how vax played it. Vax handled it perfectly, with finesse, as a rogue would call it: he just laid out his feelings, confirmed them, and didn’t try to force her to do anything. He walked away when she said she didn’t know and didn’t try convincing her any further. He got it out of system and respected whatever she said. Vax showed his morals and how good of a person he really is while Keyleth showed how she was too. Neither of them tried to shut the other down or nod them on, they both just laid out what they could. It was frankly adorable, well acted, and good for character development. One of the highlights of the series from me (this arc has a lot of highlights)

Oh yeah, it's really lovely in a wholly unpolished way. Liam & Marisha were expanding the territory of viable RP material in ways that would eventually benefit the entire cast. I really think Liam, as the die-hard theater guy, looked around and realized that if they were ever going to have romances in the stories they told, he was going to have to be the one to show everyone it could be a worthwhile part of the experience. They did a great job working through everyone's awkwardness.

Agreed, but from an out of character standpoint, I feel like Liam should have done a *little* more to help guide the conversation. There was a lot of nerves from doing that whole scene in front of the party + live chat, as well as the rest of the party teasing them by all hiding which added to the difficulty of the improv. It was good though, and the party's actions added some nice comic relief in there. I don't know why so many comments are complaining about how cringey it is because honestly I didn't find it that bad? Obviously there's a little cringe but it comes with the love confession, and the awkwardness felt realistic and even a tad charming.

Matt breaking himself with the fart joke is amazing, I'm betting that he was so very much in the scene, really picturing the characters and moment in his head that made it all the more hilarious to him. I bet that at any moment he's deeper into the story than anyone else, seeing how he made the world and all these NPC's.
