One of the major announcements to come out of D23 was Marvel's Thunderbolts! The Thunderbolts are a team of anti-heroes and villains akin to DC's Suicide Squad who are deployed on various missions around the world. In today's video, "MCU Thunderbolts Roster EXPLAINED", I go over the Thunderbolts roster that was announced at D23 which included Bucky, Val, Ghost, U.S. Agent, Red Guardian, Yelena Belova, and Taskmaster. I loved Bucky and Sams relationship in the series! I feel like they could easily pull off the "buddy cop vibe" and still get the anti-hero. They showed how he can flip the switch on a dime in the series. They also showed his ability to flip the switch back off when necessary (control)

So the way I see it the reason the team doesn't have big heavy hitters like a hulk or a thor is because they aren't the "stand on the front lines and fight the enemy head on" type like The Avengers, they're all more covert (with the exception of Red Guardian) "we're going to sneak behind and hit you where you aren't looking" type of team

I'm confident that Marvel is keeping some things secret about Thunderbolts. I have a theory that Abomination was kept from the cast reveal at D23 because they didn't want to spoil what's going on in She-Hulk. I guess we'll have to wait and see though 🤔

My theory is they will be compromised and filled with Skrulls, this sets up a chance for a brand new mystery team of heroes to show up to save the day, later to be found out to be villains. Either way, I agree there's no way this is the actual team, there's too much redundency with 3x super soldier

There are 2 Red Hulks. I can see General Robert Maverick taking over Ross' work in trying to have a government controlled team, leading to the Thunderbolts, named in Ross' honor. While Val deals with the team face to face, Maverick continues trying to perfect the super soldier serum (maybe some cooperation with the Abomination), eventually leading to Red Hulk, perhaps in a post credit scene. The Lack of Zemo and Abomination makes me think that Zemo will be the villian in this with Abomination as his muscle. They didnt bring him back just for a couple moments in the She-Hulk series i would think

In this line up there is 3 people with supersoldier serum or as close to the original as MCU has to offer. Zero hates super soldiers like flag smashers, Hydra soldiers he killed in civil war. Etc I'd imagine he will be involved some how with the thunderbolts. I'm pretty sure task master is enhanced with same thing they gave red guardian but with extra abilities and tech/weapons. Sick to have 4 SS with a widow and ghost I'm hoping 7th member changes tho

Val is clearly the person pulling the strings for the mcu team and it clearly has villains in this team. Maybe bucky will take over by the end of the film but he's not going to start off as the leader.

I'm excited for the Thunderbolts, but do you think it's going to be tough finding things for 3 guys to do who have pretty much the exact same skill set? There's 3 super soldiers there, sure their characters are very different but when it comes time to tackle the bad guy the fight will probably look a little boring unless they find a creative way to split them up.

Wyatt Russell as US Agent is going to be fantastic.. I enjoyed his character development in Falcon and the Winter Soldier, but after recently watching Under the Banner of Heaven (also starring Andrew Garfield!) I absolutely cannot wait to see the unstable mind of US Agent as he continues on his path. His acting is top notch for sure (no surprise, of course) and I hope they give him scenes to really flex his talent. Super excited for the Thunderbolts!!

I'm more confused about the lack of What If season 2 info, but they're already promoting Thunderbolts and Secret Invasion and both projects are over a year away 🤨

They usually talk about the animation stuff separate from all the live action stuff. That said, they have promoted What If Season 2 at Comic Con with a trailer and everything, it was just never released to the public. Based on what people reported to have seen in the trailer we appear to be getting Captain Carter's Winter Soldier storyline with Hydra Stomper in place of Winter Soldier, an episode on Mandarin vs Odin, and an episode based on the Marvel 1602 story, among others. Thunderbolts is closer to two years out, as it's a July 2024 release.

I doubt it’ll be the turn around the MCU needs. With the exception of Bucky, most of these characters weren’t well received or their individual movies flopped. Ultimately it’ll depend on who directs and what they try to do with it.
