Call me biased, because I am, but the politics of the Clone Wars are criminally underappreciated. Both Padmé's speech to the Senate and Palpatine's musings at the end of the episode are absolutely brilliant, some of my favorite parts of the whole show.

More important than the speech itself is the moment Padmé actually turns to Tekla and listens to her, and actually asks her what life is like for her and her family back home. Padmé Amidala, Bail Organa, Mina Bonteri, are all archetypes of an ideal politician; well meaning, perhaps, and well-intentioned, despite their position of wealth and privilege, but no less out of touch than any other senator, the self-interested war mongers of the corporate guilds, or any politician you can find in real life. At that moment, she is in despair as the ideal of democracy crumbles around her. But Teckla speaks up, and Padmé takes the moment to be with her, listen to her, asks her to tell her what the people are feeling. and Teckla reminds her, not of the ideal, but of the people the democracy is supposed to be about.

You didn’t mention the dialogue between Ahsoka and Lux. After Ahsoka took a blow to her perspective and ego by Meena, Lux gets her to see that they’re both good, normal people, regardless of their affiliations. “Well look at me. Am I so bad?” said Lux. That’s what stands out to me the most about that episode.

@Agent_A_Graham

I took it as Ahsoka also learning that she may not actually agree with the Republic, sowing seeds into her distrust of the Republic and subsequently the current state of the Jedi Order. I mean, didn't this show essentially explain that the Separatists were infiltrated by bad faith actors, making us forget the Separatism itself wasn't wrong? The Republic has been corrupt and proto-fascist before the clone war even started. Look at how easy Palpatine managed to usurp total power by the senate simply handing it to him.

When you take such arcs into consideration, you really wish that Clone Wars really lasted longer than 7 seasons. Not for the epic battles, thrilling enqounters and Obi-Wan's mockery (thou these are obviously irreplaceble), but to delve deeper into the era of the war. I want to see just how much did the Galaxy sufered, how much did the people's like Twi'leks, Pantorans, Rhodians etc. had to overcame to have their lives secured. In my opinion, despite showing us great arcs like the ones mentioned here, it wasn't enought. I'm a sucker for more details and stories like it. *The most underrated part of this arc is Teckla.* After Padme gave her speech, we never see Teckla or hear about her ever again. She went back to her crappy life, meanwhile Padme went back to her penthouse suite, with her two droid servants, a security team, and a entourage of handmaidens. She ate the finest foods, drank the best wines from Naboo, and flirted with a Jedi, while watching holos of his victories. All throughout the night Padme was probably getting holocalls from her personal friends and other senators praising her speech. A speech where she used someone else's suffering to her advantage to get more votes and more influence.

@MatthewChenault
@MatthewChenault 2 жыл бұрын
I liked both of these episodes. “Heroes on Both Sides” was a subtle nod to one of the influences of the Clone Wars; The American Civil War. After all, the American Civil War was colloquially known as “the war between brothers” and, in a similar vain, there were heroes on both sides. In the second episode, there’s also the influence of the Roman Civil War(s), starting under Julius Caesar. The Civil War(s) of the late Roman Republic mirror what is seen with the suffering and plight of the common citizens in the Clone Wars, since those conflicts, quite literally, bankrupted the Roman Republic and drove it further towards dictatorship and empire. Palpatine is meant to be analogous to the Caesars, both Julius and Augustus. By contrast, Padmé and Bail Organa are meant to be analogous to Cicero who tried his best to work with both sides and try to seek stability and peace. This is what George Lucas does best when it came to the Clone Wars: drawing further upon the basis of the historical material Star Wars drew upon and fleshing out the setting into something more.

Damn, I never thought of that. Sure it always annoyed me that nobody including Padme, Bail, Mothma, and Ono never argued the morality of using the clone troopers. Actually, nobody except the clones and Ahsoka ever grappled with that question in the show and in legends only two Jedi and a few Mandalorians addressed it in the Republic Commando series. Shocking to think this speech actually helps out Palpatine. Granted Geetsly makes good points to why people did lose their faith in the Jedi Order, but of course we know all that did in the end was make Palpatine stronger. And of course supporters of Padme and those who are suffering in the war are going to turn against the clone troopers. It’s easier to hate the soldier who is just a common man like you instead of the politician who is at the top. Padme of course is supportive of the clones, but I honestly wonder if she and anybody in the peace faction ever wondered what was going to happen to the clones. At least the Jedi could return to their pre-war state, but the clones were made solely to serve the Republic as a military force. Palpatine would have to be revealed and stopped in the ideal situation, so the position of chancellor will lose power and the senate will fall into pre-war infighting. Nobody except for the few remaining Palpatine supporters will want the GAR and the Navy to exist, heck Kamino may even get kicked out of the Republic. I don’t think that Padme’s supporters would agree with trying to help the clones integrate into civilian life since it was their very creation that made life terrible for them, not to mention nobody likes having foreigners join the nation in a time of recovery since that could mess things up. To be honest, I can imagine the senate, the Jedi, and maybe the Separatists recovering after the war if the latter exists. But the clone troopers and Kamino on the other hand are screwed no matter what. Nobody will want them in our timeline and the alternate one, nobody will like them in our timeline and the alternate one, I say even with Jedi and Senate advocates, the galaxy would never accept the clone troopers, even if the inhibitor chips were removed. They would be the one species along with the Kaminoans who would absolutely never get a happy ending that everybody else gets in the alternate timeline, even if that ending comes years later. They probably would only be able to interact with planets in the Rishi Maze and the Unknown Regions given how unpopular Kamino and its clones will be to both sides.

The Kaminoans would have no issue with working with the Hutt and to be fair the Hutt did have an alliance with the Republic, so some clones may have operated in joint missions with Hutt gangsters. However I doubt the majority of clones are going to like working alongside criminals. Even the Bad Batch, as unorthodox and unique as they are to the rest of the clones, didn't easily slide into their job as being hired guns. Besides, the alliance I mentioned earlier may still stand and if the Republic denounces the clones and Kamino, the Hutts may keep their distance to avoid getting on the bad side of a galactic power.

I really appreciate how much depth these episodes added to Padme's character. We see how much she cares about the people she's representing. It builds well to her line in ROTS, saying to Anakin "Have you ever wondered if we're on the wrong side?" Her death is made all the more tragic when you consider that the peace and democracy she valued so dearly and fought for relentlessly were taken away before her eyes, at the same time as Anakin. Both were taken by one man, Darth Sidious. All this time she strived to end the Clone Wars, Palpatine was pulling the strings and she had no idea. She represents his opposite, morally speaking. Both are Senators, both from Naboo. They have very similar backgrounds, yet one chooses to be one of the most selfless characters in Star Wars, striving for peace and the wellbeing of everyone above all else, and the other chooses to orchestrate a galactic war costing millions of lives so he can rule over a dictatorial new Empire.

Huh, I never considered this an underrated story, I always thought it was a very good pair of episodes and thought it was decently remembered by the fans, same with the Racko Hardem arc from season 4. I always thought this episode shed a light on the truth of The Clone Wars that was often overlooked, of course, in our case we usually follow the really good Jedi and Clones against the really bad Seps, so it's understable how this aspect can be overlooked, which would make it very memorable to many and not underrated. At least that's how I've always viewed these pair of season 3 episodes. Of course, in fairness, both this and the Racko Hardem arc are usually overshadowed by the other more well-remembered and impressive arcs from their seasons such as Ventress stuff, Maul's return, Umbara, Mortis, the Citadel, maybe even the Battle of Mon Cala and Kamino too. So these arcs usually aren't the first talked about, but I'd call that more being overshadowed, then downright forgotten and underrated. Stuff like Ahsoka's lost Lightsaber or Season 1 episode Trespass are more in the category of underrated and forgotten stories than this arc and the Racko Hardem one. Also, I'd argue there were a large number of heroes on the front lines, but given the size and scale of the war with like billions fighting across the galaxy, even if the heroes numbered in the thousands your assessment of most of the heroes not fighting on the frontlines would still be accurate. Also, also, I'm pretty sure it was only a select group of the villains on both sides(mostly the ones in the Republic) that got to win in the end, as many villains for the Separatists and probably even a few for the Republic were killed by the end of the war after they served their purpose like Dooku, Grevious, the Separatist Council and so on. Heck, even though Anakin survived and was technically on the winning side after what happened to him, I'm pretty sure he doesn't count it as a win. So really the only true winners were Palpatine and the select few still integral for his plans with the Empire, so the likes of Mas Amedda, Sly Moore, Sate Prestige, Tarkin, and so on.

I always thought that padme assistant tekla was talking about corusant not naboo . She lives in the capital with padme . I believe naboo was an energy provider. Naboo plasma . Maintaining corusant would be more difficult with its population.

Political episodes are the reason why Star wars the clone wars 2008 will always be better than anything Disney ever tries to put out Edit: yes this does include the bad batch it ended up being more of a rebels prequel than a clone wars sequel the only way that it can truly redeem itself is for season 2 to go more in depth on the politics of the empire to show how truly evil fascism really is as apparently the fact that fascism is evil is no longer a prevailing universal idea

@@goodmind4940 sorry I didn't reply to you for over a year but the thing is is that I did a poor job of explaining what I was trying to say the main problem isn't that knowing fascism is evil it's recognizing fascism when it starts to rear its ugly head as what is going on in the United States currently for example scotus recently considered (I don't know if they've approved it yet) the idea that companies can sue striking workers for "lost profits" that is straight up slavery or maybe more accurately indentured servitude. This also means that unions are completely not that they were that useful ever since the 1930s since most unions don't have teeth anymore as in they don't f"blaster shot"ing do anything. And that is the exact reason why I'm more for revolution then unionization however that becomes more and more unrealistic everyday the more than military grows also the moment we become an actual threat they'll just bomb or nuke us.

I know that this isn’t the main point of the arc, but I like how it introduces Lux to Ahsoka. I find it interesting how our main Jedi within the show all have some sort of encounter with attachment. Anakin and Padmé obviously, Obi-Wan and Satine, and Ahsoka and Lux. It’s interesting to see how each Jedi has their own complicated situation with attachment that certainly forces them to reconsider their loyalties. This is without a doubt intentional, as Dave was probably just trying to show that the greatest Jedi have room in their hearts for love. Not just Jedi beliefs and misunderstandings.

1:07: *spit-takes* Aww, how is this the end of this nice series? Please do a second season of this. Must admit, this arc probably ensured Padme's expendability to Palpatine as a whole. Also, anyone catch the subtle "Take That" joke involving Halle Burtoni's (the Kaminoan who helped create the spending bill) name? (Why am I hearing Mission Vao during that speech? My ears are just that good at noticing familiar voices.) 10:06: Did they? Regardless on whether you're continuing with Legends or the Alt-universe, wars never end in the galaxy, and believe me, some of the hardened actions of the warmongers are actually justifiable, especially if we take the Legends universe's Yuuzhan Vong into account... you can acquire peace and stability for some years, but the price would be far worser strife by the time it's all spent.

Very interesting take on that arc and I don't disagree with your explanation of it's underlining message. When I first watched it, my thoughts were why is the government having to supply electricity instead of a private utility company. However, now that doesn't matter the taxes resulting from that spending bill could have caused the same problems.

I think star wars Politics it's potrays so amazing but allso scary. Because if we see in our world ( 1 planet) politics will (usually) always end in empty promises. And many thing become more horrible because people can get 1 voice for something for greater good. Because everyone think they had their own thing to worried about. That just 1 Planet 😂 with same kind (Human). i can't even imagine scale of politics in star wars with that many planet in galaxy 😂 and with different species ( Sorry for my english still learning)
