I always liked the message of CCR's Fortunate Son which highlighted how unfairly The Draft is actually applied in the United States. The rich and connected (i.e. corporate titans and politicians) ensured their children didn't spend time in the service, or if they did volunteer, it was only as officers that didn't see battle.

When I was in Vietnam I managed to get a reel-to-reel recording of this song and never missed an opportunity to blast it out! Surprised I never got in trouble for it! To all my brothers and sisters out there Welcome Home. It was relevant then and even more now and always. I wish I knew who to credit for this quote, "War Isn't About Who's Right It's About Who's Left".

Yes! Enjoying the "Music" ... Bouncing to the beat, laughing, etc. while being TOTALLY oblivious to the words and their meaning. As a former Air Force AeroMed during Vietnam I witnessed first hand "the destruction of innocent life's on a daily basis. I'm 73 and still wake up at times with nightmares.

I was 14 when this song came out and it had such an impact on me. We were all so fed up with the Vietnam war by then and this song just said it all for us. Greatest anti war song ever made. I still scream it out when I sing it today just like I did 53 years ago. The line "War can't give life it can only take it away" says it all as well as "They say we must fight to keep our freedom but Lord no there's got to be better way."

The sickest thing about Vietnam was that it had nothing to do with our freedom. Our freedom was never in jeopardy... not even a little bit. When I was in Army boot camp, WAR was always on the jukebox in the little PX beer garden across from our chow hall. We'd all be mentally boogying to the song when we were in the chow line. You didn't actually boogy or the drill sergeants would be all over you. A few months later I was in Vietnam and the song was still playing all over the place...We all loved it.

And that song kept playing in my head, syncing to the sound of rotors as those sick green birds disgorged us like the Phoenix taking a crap. Being a 60's teen, this song was hard to listen to, but he sang the truth. There was a draft and took all of our boys away and so many never came back, or came back and weren't the same. The ones that came back felt unwelcome. Very hard, sad, time.

To my mind this is as great a piece of music as exists. Edwin was a soul star from the 60s, I watched him live around 1985 in a field in front of about 20,000 other British kids at a scooter rally on the Isle Of Wight. When he did this song the whole place erupted. He seemed genuinely overwhelmed at the noise coming back at him as we all sang along word for word. 25 miles has to be the next track of his that you do...We all sang that one as well.

I was lucky enough to see Edwin Starr as a 14 year old around 1971 on a radio show in London. A teacher took a few of us as he seemed to know people! Olivia Newton-John was also there. David Hamilton was the DJ (He seemed old even then). 😂😂 Edwin had a bright green cape/jacket on. He seemed so exotic. It was a time when guests sang live. He and Olivia were fantastic. War was originally a Temptations track on their Psychedelic shack album . The students & anti Vietnam war movement ,requested it be released as a single . Due to the fact the subject was very controversial at the time ,Motown didn’t want to risk releasing a single version by their top male group the Temptations . It was decided to funk it up & turn it into a powerhouse version by Edwin Starr a singer Motown had acquired on their books when they had took over Ric Tic Golden world records . The rest is history ,it was a big hit & a perfect song for Edwin’s powerful soulful delivery . He had a lot of fans in the U.K. on the Northern soul scene ,& settled here in the U.K. to live & perform the remainder of his life .

From 1955 to 1975 you had the Vietnam War. The U.S. entered it in 1965. This song came out in 1970. So this was the "I'm sick and tired of this hot, meat grinder mess" response in song. It had to be big, bad, bold and brash to get a large enough attention to those with the same idea. It was just a bloody mess and someone had to say enough is enough. Enter Edwin Starr. 🗣️🌟

"Eve of Destruction" is another tough one that we all know. Eve of Destruction has lyrics that are going to make you sit back and think. When we were growing up there was the draft. You didn't have a choice, unless you ran away to Canada or got a medical pass.

A must listen. As a child of the late 60s/70s I find the lyrics still relevant today. To give balance you should listen to Jackie DeShannon’s “What the World Needs Now is Love” and “Put a Little Love in Your Heart”. Both were hits in the late 60s.

I have to correct something Amber said. She mentioned people signing up to go fight. During the Vietnam war our young men were drafted. They went whether they wanted to or not. Which made it so much worse. Unfortunately, things don't change much...on his 1985 live album, Bruce Springsteen made a cover of this with a truly devastating video. I'm not going to tell you why it's devastating but when you see it you'll know

Ask them how they felt about serving in the military in a foreign land for a lost cause. *Edit* Just so you know, I came from a military family. My mother and father were Army. My brother, uncles, cousins and friends served in Vietnam. My oldest son retired from the military. And my daughter also served for 8 years. So I am not against the military but senseless wars.

Edwin Starr was bad ass. He put every bit of energy into his vocals. I still listen to some of my favorite black artists from the 60's & 70's and I'm a rocker. In the day it was called soul music, but no one ever sang a song quite like this one. Edwin put all of his blood and guts into this one.

Edwin Starr lived in the UK for many years and had a manor house called pooley hall near Tamworth,about fifty miles from here.The building was 15th century I think.

I was in fifth grade. It was “record day” in music class. Somebody brought “War” to school and slapped it on the record player. I tell ya… EVERY kid in that room was blown away. This was a little country school in the farmlands of Pennsylvania. Little girls in gingham dresses and saddle shoes. Boys with patches on their jeans. They were all screaming and feelin’ the funk that day! I politely asked the record’s owner if I could borrow it… I can’t remember giving it back. The thought of war STILL blows my mind.
