Rubin isn't a musician, he's just a vibes guy. Think his producing amounts to him listening to the music on a bed, and him just saying things like it, "turn up the bass". To Rubin's credit, he did produce Slayer's unholy trinity of Reign in Blood, South of Heaven and Seasons, and the 4 Danzig albums, which are amongst my favourite albums, period.

@@dlwseattle When Rubin spoke to Anderson Cooper, he claimed that he "barely" knew how to play any instruments and later said, “I have no technical ability, and I know nothing about music.” And of course, also by his own admission, he doesn't know how a mixing desk works. If you're hiring him, it's exclusively for his ability to judge what is "right" and "wrong" with your songs or in-progress recordings. It's not a secret.

Rubin ( along with some sussed engineers ) is a good producer for a band that is new at the time . For older established acts he tries too hard to recreate an earlier era which results in an uninspired pastiche of their former work ... The idea that he made the band listen to their first album and then said "now I want you to follow that" is just complete horse shit . When they originally followed the first album with Paranoid it was an enormous success with War Pigs breaking them in America and almost all of the tracks ( specifically Iron Man and Electric Funeral ) being constant staples in their live set ... Rubin also provided Iommi ( without consulting him ) some vintage Laney amplifiers which were rejected because Tony never used standard models ( his were always modified to his own specifications ) ... I only heard 2 songs from 13 in a record store and to me it sounded like an attempted update of their early 70's Master of Reality era ( except with unmemorable material ) . I totally dig everything from the first note of the first album through to the last note of the Never Say Die album . I saw them on the 1978 tour at Newcastle City Hall ( UK ) along with Van Halen opening the show ( both bands were phenomenal ) . Easily one of the greatest gigs I've ever witnessed .

I REALLY tried to get into 13 when it came out. Had it in the car on repeat. Checked out all the riffs, could do a couple of them on my guitar... really tried getting into it. After a while, I listed to Sabotage again. After so many listens to 13, Sabotage now seemed extremely fresh, dynamic, and well-made. 13 went into the dust bin. It seemed uninspired, and kind of doing Black Sabbath like a color-by-numbers crayon book. I recall that there was a BIG push on the song "God is Dead?" and a COMPLETELY MANUFACTURED SUPPOSED CONTROVERSY over what the song was really saying lyrically. Geezer did all kinds of interviews "defending" the song's message. He even "pointed out" that the title HAD A QUESTION MARK! F*ing laughable. All a load of crap. In reality, NO ONE AT ALL GAVE A CRAP about the song "God Is Dead?" Here, look, I can do it too! Satan is Smiling? .. Jesus Is King? .. Disease Rots Humanity? SUCH PROFOUND THOUGHTS!

Rick Rubin doesn't understand true Black Sabbath. He tried to remake the 70's stuff but he pushed for a lyrically darker album and killed Sabbath's creativity. Black Sabbath is heavy gloomy powerful riff sound but the lyrics are typically optimistic, spiritual, political even... a unique point of view on many things of the world we live in. Rick Rubin clearly doesn't get what Sabbath's sound truly is about. I think not having Bill Ward involved only made things worse. Add Bill Ward and get a different producer and you probably have a masterpiece album
