At kawaiidemon's request, I researched the print and I can say with confidence that the woman is neither a geisha nor an oiran. My first clue was that she is wearing the Yuiwata coiffure, which is worn mostly by unmarried girls. Her obi is also tied in the back, and her collar is red. Next, the actual print is one of Utamaro's, in his series Contemporary Dancers and it's called Dojoji. It's about the main character in the kabuki play Musume Dojoji, so actually the woman is a man.

That tattoo is beautiful! No wonder the guy can charge through the roof, the detail and intricacy of his work is breathtaking! But is it really possible to get that whole piece done in one sitting?

Origins In the early stages of Japanese history, there were female entertainers: saburuko (serving girls) were mostly wandering girls whose families were displaced from struggles in the late 600s.[6] Some of these saburuko girls sold sexual services, while others with a better education made a living by entertaining at high-class social gatherings. After the imperial court moved the capital to Heian-kyō (Kyoto) in 794 the conditions that would form Japanese Geisha culture began to emerge, as it became the home of a beauty-obsessed elite.[6] Skilled female performers, such as Shirabyōshi dancers, thrived.

Many Westerners confuse geisha with prostitutes. Those who understand the intricacies of Japanese culture explain that a geisha is not a prostitute. A true geisha is successful because she projects a sense of unattainable perfection. When men hire geisha to entertain at a party, sex has nothing to do with it. A geisha entertains with singing, music, dance, story-telling, attentiveness and flirtation. She can speak about politics as easily as she can explain the rules of a drinking game. In a time when Japanese wives were excluded from public life in general, geisha were the women who could play the role of attentive female at business gatherings. people.howstuffworks.com/geisha1.htm

Geisha are educated , intelligent, subtle, refined, classy, strong, tough, elegant, sophisticated, polite, fun, independent women and above all artists, because they are raised in a certain way, they study the arts relentlessly , they show unconditional and irrevocable devotion to the discipline of the profession. Not because they tattoo themselves with an Utamaro Ukiyoe of a 花嫁 suposed to be representing a geisha. This girl is just showing in this video that she is the absolute opposite of a geisha. My mother in law is a geisha , she has an amazing tattoo on her back that took 5 years and was made not using electric machines and medical like needles but the excruciating painful bamboo needle stick. She couldn't sleep properly for the whole 5 years and it took 7 months before the master Tattoo artist and her agreed on the pattern then the master painted several models to present them to her and she chose one. Once the pattern had been reproduced on the skin using a special ink, the Tattoo master burned all the models so the same pattern could never be reproduced again and then tattooed all the outlines that would later on be filled with colours. The tattooing of the outlined must be traditionally done in one session so she had her skin tattooed with bamboo needles for 11 hours . Now you compare that to this girl in the video. Plus this tattoo guys has a very unsteady hand , and the result is really REALLY far from a traditional Japanese tattoo. Especially the eyes the mouth and the colour filling . And as koji San explains it in Japanese bellow the lady on the Utamaro painting is not a geisha , it is what is referred to in Japanese as 美人or beautiful person, and by the hair style and ornaments and the pattern on the fan, she is clearly a bride, which is by definition the opposite of the Geisha since Geisha can't marry unless they stop the profession. So Good job to both the client who got duped and the tattoo guy who just sells his product but has no real knowledge of what he forever tattoos on someone's body

+olafursson kyllian i assume she doesnt have to money to travel and get a traditional tattoo, but she really just tried to represent an educated women and her pride as a women who loves knowledge , but yes she could have been more original or lived in the same culture but i dont think it takes away from her passion...

Wooooow, what a gorgeous tattoo. It's apparent that some people didn't watch "Memoirs of a Geisha." lol. I actually learned a great deal about Geishas through that film. Being a Geisha is an art! I always knew that they were educated entertainers and NOT prostitutes, but the film takes it so much further in depth. :)

This was my first time ever vacationing and visiting Miami Beach . I flew in from Chicago and was excited to stop by and try to get me another Military Tattoo from Miami ink and never thought that I would meet such an arrogant jerk off. I tried to explain what Military tattoo I wanted it was like he didn't even want to hear it. I then asked about wanting to get my best friends Paw print who I adopted from an animal shelter and had for seven years and died of diabetes wanting to get his paw on my arm then tried to show him the pic, he says no need to I did plenty I think I know what a paw looks like that will cost you around $200.00 - $400.00 dollars. Glad to know your a psychic and know exactly what i wanted jerk off. Never again will i ever stop I that place if I ever visit again. The people other than that place are awesome though.

@fuyouhime I noticed a lot of people saying that she's an Oiran or Tayuu as a way of saying she's a courtesan, but the term Oiran and Tayuu don't work that way. Those are very specific terms, in that they are respectively the highest class of courtesan in Edo and Kyoto. They also come with very specific looks and requirements to meet. The general term for a high class courtesan was Yuujo, and the general term for a lower class one was Shougi. Those would be the more appropriate terms to use.
