Quick word on dyed GSP, they will gunk and clog your bobbins. Use white, then finish off the head using a colored sharpie on the last 6” of thread to match your fly. I’ve tied dozens of pike and musky flies, got tired of cleaning out the bobbin tube.

Exactly!!!!

I use white gsp with markers already, but these is a useful tip.

Love the stuff, I prefer nano silk. Absolute game changer!!! Once you get used to tying with such a strong thread it will save a lot of frustration as you never break the thread. The thread tension must be monitored so you don't cut through the materials such as deer hair.

Gel spun is killer stuff for making a lot of streamers that are durable as all get out. Kelly Galloup turned me on to that stuff.

I used to hate it but it makes life so much easier working with deer hair. I was so tired of snapping thread. Not anymore! GSP for me.

Flat waxed nylon has some of the same properties - multi strand & can be used flat or corded - correct?
@tightlinevideo3 жыл бұрын
Yes, those properties are the same. Two big differences though. 1.Strength of GSP is far greater than regular nylon. 2. GSP has basically no stretch which to me is not a plus.

Using wax (especially wax for gsp threads from Semperfli) solved the problem with first wraps on the shank.

Yeah I use wax on gsp and it's an absolute game changer

Personally I hate the stuff, much prefer flat waxed nylon. To each his own though…. Great tips though as always.

One thread you forgot to mention is nano silk which is a gsp type thread

I use high-end cuticle scissors for most of my fly tying. When cutting Semperfli Nanosilk I can make a precise cut using only one blade of the scissors. I barely have to touch the cutting edge against the thread, which is under tension. Tim is right, GSP is slippery. As others have already commented, I also use wax ( e.g. Veniards Prepared Fly Tyers Wax ) to prevent slippage. I found a couple of interesting videos on the topic which have been helpful: Thread Wax - by Tim Flagler ( kzbin.info/www/bejne/fneTpYWEf9V2h6s ) How I prepare my Wax for tying flies with Davie McPhail ( kzbin.info/www/bejne/f3-Xf2xofJZnjsk )

If your shears aren't cutting GSP is 2 things, one not sharp at all, 2 tension between blades is wrong.
@handcannon13883 жыл бұрын
It is also much easier to cut if you keep the thread tight while cutting it.
@CECS13 жыл бұрын
@@handcannon1388 absolutely, but there is also issues with how the blades contact each other and the way they're set (bent) which can cause even more issues.
