just a word of caution about allowing your precious fur baby to drink from brush clean basin. The toxins in the paint pigments can cause serious poisoning. Better to cover that and set a special clean water bowl out for kitty.

Thank you for your concern for Sammy! I didn't understand when he came to me as a feral cat that he would not choose to drink the water that I put out by his food bowl in the kitchen, but preferred to have an alternate water source, aka, the water on the painting table. At that point, I became somewhat neurotic about ensuring that water was always free of any paint or paint residue. I am also an animal lover and always seek to keep my fur babies safe!

When using any stamping tool, consider stamping on gel plate, then stamp off on clean sheet of paper. Then stamp on gel plate again. You’ll get a cleaner stamp image and less color mixing. Also consider stamping off on another gel plate to create another image to pull later. I also keep a folded baby wipe close by to clean my stamping tools. Acrylic will wipe off if cleaned shortly after use, leaving a crisp stamp image for ur next printing session. Great work!

And already looking for more patterns in the paint. I am glad I found your video. I have only a small table to work from and can only do one paper at a time until it dries. I have a tiny desk. ❤. Hi, KZbin just recommended your channel. I love gelli printing. Your prints are beautiful. I'm curious, do you find that the Golden fluid acrylics give you more open time here in Phoenix? I run into issues with my other artist acrylics drying too fast for some things I want to try. I'm hesitant to invest in the Goldens yet tho.
@VikkiReed
@VikkiReed 3 жыл бұрын
Natalie, gelli printing with the air conditioning or fan really limits what you can do. I like the Golden fluid acrylics, but I have not tried Golden "Open Acrylics" which provide more drying time. You could also try adding a bit of GAC 100 to your acrylics to give you more fluidity. Thanks for watching!

Missy, I appreciate your concern for Sammy...the water is not paint water, I assure you. It is clean water and I learned that feral cats (which Sammy is) somehow prefer to drink water away from their food, which is why he doesn't drink the water in the kitchen, preferring to jump up on the painting table and sip from the yogurt container with the water in it. I am fanatical about keeping the water clean and paint free

Great question Ellen! Yes, you do need to be aware of the surface of what you are pressing on your plate and avoid scratching the gelli plate. The lipstick holder is smooth and doesn't leave any lasting marks, but something sharp and pointy would. You will know if you press it on your hand first.

Jacki, the rice paper has a couple of advantages, it has a "smooth" side which really pulls up paint from the plate, AND it is heavenly to use for collage in paintings. For greeting cards, I like to use a heavier stock, 24 or even 32 pound, thanks for your question!

Gail, thanks for your question, the thin white coat, or coat of paint is what is needed to free the paint from the plate. You could try an acrylic medium, I think GAC 100 is probably too thin, maybe matte medium, I should try it and put it into a video!

Love watching your gel plate videos. I notice that there is often beading up of the paint on your plate, especially noticeable with the darker colors or base prints. Do you know what causes that and how to get rid of it? It happens to me from time to time and I really don’t like the way it looks on my prints.
@VikkiReed
@VikkiReed 3 жыл бұрын
Kris, I have learned that some maintenance of the plate is necessary, I tend to not like maintenance, but when there is build up, you can clear it quickly with some gel hand sanitizer, primarily because there is alcohol in it and alcohol dissolves acrylic paint. It's super important, though, to not leave any alcohol on your plate, so follow that up with some baby wipes and then "condition" your plate with some mineral oil or baby oil. I learned most of these amazing tips from a video I watched from Theresa Morgan, the link is here...kzbin.info/www/bejne/paiUdHtspJyYi7M Happy printing!

Since you only give a brief glimpse of the print when you take it off the plate, could you lay them out at the end and give us a better look at each one? Nice work! Really good tutorial on the Gelli plate. I took a live class a couple years ago and the instructor did one segment on Gelli plate. One of the supplies we were supposed to purchase was "transparencies". (Like $30/box). I was doing exactly what the instructor said to do ... and the transparency stuck on the Gelli plate ... when I got it off it pulled off pieces from the plate along with it. Later, I read in a book never to put transparencies on the Gelli plate. Ugh. I don't know why but I still haven't quite gotten the hang of the Gelli plate. This morning, after watching your tutorial, I am going to immortalize my recent Mother's Day bouquet by using my new Gelli plate and the leaves. Wanted to ask two questions: What kinds of paper do you prefer? Why the Dylusions paint? What does it have that Golden does not? Just curious. You do nice work!
@VikkiReed
@VikkiReed 4 ай бұрын
Oh my gosh, I'm so sorry to hear about the unfortunate introduction to gelli plate printing! There is a bit of a learning curve, but the potential for jaw dropping magical results is worth it! Thank you for your questions, I will answer to the best of my ability! The paper I prefer is listed in the supplies, JapanBargain Calligraphy Rice Paper. This is my favorite because is is thin...smooth (especially the shinier side, and it melts beautifully into mixed media collage work. If you use the link I provide in my supply list, I have the potential to earn a small commission from Amazon, while your price is the same, and this helps me! My second choice is HP Premium 32 (32 lb. copy paper) which is MUCH sturdier and works well if the intention is to create greeting cards or a print that you are going to mount directly to birchwood panel. Repurposed book pages are also fun! The Dylusions is NOT my preference, (Golden Fluid Acrylics #1 choice, SOME Liquitex soft body paints #2, Amsterdam for specialty prints like photo transfers #3). Dylusions does have a couple of colors that are harder to create with Golden, and specifically because mixing colors on the gelli plate is not ideal. (Of course, you could mix it with a palette knife on another plate and then transfer to your gelli plate). I always struggle with the viscosity of the Dylusions, so I don't use it very often. Wishing you success with your Mother's Day Bouquet prints!

Zoe, yes! I prefer the Gel Press plate, 8" X 10" or smaller (I struggle with pulling good prints on the larger plates, although you may not), but either brand, (Gel Press or Gelli Arts) will serve you well, I have not tried the Speedball brand plate. I use the 4" brayer most often, (I do use the 6" brayer in this video but you can start with a 4"). I like the Speedball (soft rubber) brayers, but they are more expensive. Enjoy your creative journey!

After watching other gel videos where they wait for things to dry before layering, I'm wondering why you do things right away? Does the rice paper dry quicker, therefore being able to move to the next layer? I have a gel plate, but haven't used it yet as I've been to intimidated. But after watching your video, and having rice paper already, I want to give it ago. I love your style. Thank you so much.

TRoth, excellent question! What I know now, is that because I am in a warm dry climate, I don't have to wait (most of the time) when others might need to...and I will say, please use your gel plate! It is SO much fun! No need to worry, rice paper is inexpensive (although Golden Fluid Acrylics are not!) Just play, experiment and have fun...a fabulous print is a bonus!

@VikkiReed
@VikkiReed Жыл бұрын
Yvonne, thank you for your questions, I use the JapanBargain Calligraphy Rice paper from Amazon in the blue and clear packaging, and yes, for me the Golden have the best consistency/results on the gelli plate, for this style of printing. If you are trying to do an image transfer, though, you will need the heavier body acrylics, Amsterdam is best. I use Liquitex soft body at times, and I've experimented with other brands, but sometimes the pigment to binder ratio in the paints is off in the less expensive brands, (less pigment and more binder) and it makes it very hard to get good results. I hope that helps!

Laurie, you can use the gelli plate right out of the clam shell, you just might might more white skips, on your prints at first, sometimes new plates do that, but I don't mind those at all! Into the future you will want to condition your plate with mineral oil, but no need to start with that. Your work is beautiful. You printed on rice paper. If you want to frame your work, do you mount it to something else for stability or transfer onto a more substantial material?
@VikkiReed
@VikkiReed 8 ай бұрын
Thanks so much for your comment and question! Yes, I mount gelli prints to birchwood panel or canvas board (birchwood panel is preferable). The rice paper can be challenging if you want it as a one piece work, I tend to tear it and apply as collage, in fact I have just filmed a video on that and if all goes well it will be up soon to see. Here are two videos showing the method I describe, one is using the rice paper to create a collage base, "How to Use Gelli Prints for Collage Projects - Creating A Base - Part 1" kzbin.info/www/bejne/mJytp2Bqr9eYrq8 and one is applying a print to birchwood panel, but in this case I am using a print I created on HP Premium 32 paper, Adding Gelli Plate Dragonfly Art to Wood Panel kzbin.info/www/bejne/f4iwkIqKoZupi80si=K4DdiX8ecS54tZIX which I prefer if my plan is to mount it, or I am creating greeting cards!

You are so good with color combinations. Is that something you learn or do you just like mixing colors you like? Should I learn color theory?
@VikkiReed
@VikkiReed 2 жыл бұрын
Dora, great question...I am not following the "rules" here. Color theory is important, but not as important as playing with your plate/creativity. If I had to make a recommendation, I would say, pick a primary group you like, a red, blue and yellow, have black and white handy, and from there you can accomplish an amazing amount! Pro-tip...I avoid the cadmiums, with the exception of cadmium lemon, because whenever I use them I get "mud", they just don't layer well.

As an educator at the elementary level I have recently purchased geli plates for my class. Love the process but our plate don’t come as clean each print I’ve just been using cheap apple acrylic paint. Is this not a good media to us on the geli plates?
@VikkiReed
@VikkiReed 2 жыл бұрын
Heather, there are quite a few factors that can affect the plate not "coming clean". My first thought is not the paint is too cheap, but that there is not enough moisture in the paint to pull the print. You can use packing tape if there is paint left on the plate, but don't leave it on more that a few seconds. Almost all of the acrylics I use are Golden FLUID acrylics, I hope that helps!
