GELLI PRINTING: Alternative Laserjet Transfer Method Pt.1

It's annoying, isn't it, when you keep trying to do these laserjet image transfers and they just don't work? Well, I've been having a little bit of an experiment lately and I think I might have found a way that could possibly
help if you're having the same troubles as I am.
In this video, I will show you how I've created a method of applying a laserjet image to a gel plate print via sticker-backing paper. I will show you a simple print that I've created on the gel plate using acrylic paint and paint brushes. After the print is pulled you will see how I transfer this laserjet image on top of my finished gel plate print using gel medium.

Evergreen Goods - 10 sheets A4 Kraft Matte Printable Sticker Paper Labels (Amazon)
Frisk drawing cartridge paper 220gsm (Amazon)
Gel Press Gel Plate
Amsterdam Standard Series Acrylic Paint.
Tracing Paper
Fabre-Castellated Pitt Monochrome Range Artists Medium Pastel Pencil - White
Liquitex Professional Acrylic Medium Matte Gel
Paint brushes

I am about to try this technique. I think it is going to work. I believe I've figured out why the other Laser Prints don't work. It is because newer laser printers use a different method to adhere the toner to the printed paper. Older laser printers use "fuser oil" to adhere the toner, newer laser printers don't use the same process. It is the oil in older laser printers that provide the RESIST so newer laser printer prints won't work with the Gelli laser transfer process.

Working in a printing house, I collected this paper after stickers, hoping that it would be possible to use it somehow so that it would not immediately end up in the trash can. I have a whole roll of it and for some time I've been thinking about doing a transfer test on it by printing with a laser printer. Thank you very much for this video and confirming that it is possible. @@gelwithmark It would appear that you can use the same transfer sheet several times. I used a full a4 sheet for a project and then printed a different image on it again successfully.

There’s another method that we used to use with the matte medium that will make great “painterly” images and can be used with magazines/laser/ inkjet prints. You simply coat the front of the image several times with the matte medium, allowing it to dry between coats and a good dry after the last coat. Then all you need to do is immerse the paper in a bowl of water and gently rub the paper off the back. It takes awhile and you have to be gentle, but the image should stick to the matter medium and become translucent when the paper is gone. Thanks Mark! Love your videos!

I've had really good luck with laser transfers by running the paper through the printer several times to build up the toner. But I've never achieved details like this. Amazing work 💛💛

Yes this technique does allow you to achieve extra fine details, but like I said it can take a few attempts to get a feel for it.

This method works weel with inkhet also...using mod podge inkjet transfer is the same method actually... This is an awesome way to combine it with the gel plate...I have been looking for ways to color my gel plate images..this is awesome...thank you for the inspriation

No problem. With the inkjet method you have mentioned, doesn’t the image bleed when you place it on to the mod podge?? Do you cover your print in the mod podge and then place your inkjet on top face down and then life after it has dried, I’m not sure of your process of this inkjet method. I’ve tried some experiments with inkjet but have never had success.

btw...it only works with black inkjet dye based inks...doesn't work with pigment inkjet inks

laserjet uses toner which provides a resist....so you can actually transfer the black and white using black acylic as your first detail layer...this is the most common way to transfer a laserjet image to a plate.. ink jet however transfers the ink from the paper to the plate....I'm pretty sure it is the dye based that does that....I'm not 100% which one it is (dye or pigment) however inkjet does NOT provide a resist like laserjet does...which is why everyone suggests to use laserjet with the gel plates@@gelwithmark

You want the more shiny side that the sticker pulls off from.

Can't u just use the backing sheet for Avery labels that are for laser printers or have u tried using backing paper on contact paper on rolls which is super cheap

I've tried image transfer from glossy magazines and it's worked 50% of the time. This looks like a improved process, but now I have to acquire a laser printer. Can you explain how to use a lino print to transfer the image?

You can ink up the Lino plate to either put it onto the gel plate and use it like a stamp or you can print a gel plate image onto paper and then ink up your Lino and print that on top of your gel print. I haven’t really experimented much with lino print/ gel print combinations though.

@@Momperliese I think that could be the problem, I had a brother one and found that it would not print on to a shiny surface so I had to sell it and buy an HP printer instead. I think brother must have something different in their toner and that’s why it doesn’t work. I guess you could try a different brand on toner that isn’t by Brother to see if it works that way.

Thanks for another informative video. Regarding your question, yes, you can get the same results with a color print. I have used this method to transfer onto fabric and papers.
