Paul, I have a late 30s vintage Gem Junior. You’re right - the angle is very important. It’s not like shaving with a DE.

Yes sir!!! Awesome display as always!!! My SOTD will be the Gibbs 17 Adjustable with a Gillette Platinum blade, Simpson Chubby 3 Manchurian Badger brush, Saponificio Varesino Desert Vetiver Soap and Aftershave, and L'oreal Men Expert Birch Sap Balm to seal the deal. Meal of the day is just some homemade pizzas with the family, any toppings they want, then I just throw them in the pizza oven outside. Have a wonderful day and stay safe!

Love a close GEM shave! I have a GEM Micromatic and a GEM Junior. Micromatic is open comb while my Junior is a closed comb. Both give a very close shave and you must respect the angle or it will bite. Great shave! Planning Thursday’s SOTD GEM Micromatic and my first time using a Derby stick gifted by a shave brother and my Vie Long horse hair brush. Shave on!

When I watch your vids, I immediately think of my dad. I mean that in the best of ways. I’m probably as old or older than you but something just takes me back to watching him shave when I was very young. Anyway, another great vid and info, have a great rest of your week and look forward to the Sunday shave.

Good afternoon Paul! Beautiful flowers paired with classy music; thank you Mrs. H!! In a box that contains unpopular with me shaving gear/kit there are several styles of GEM razors, including this one you are using. I am thinking SE razors are not my thing. The Colgate soap is my thing...lol. The one you have here is toward the end of its production. I find that it works well enough; the older versions are even better. New stuff: I found my way onto Ebay...so there are some packages to arrive soon. I bought some vintage Williams soaps (one has arrived and used), another bottle of 1960 Williams Ice Blue Aqua Velva, and some vintage made in Poland PolSilver and Wizamet Iridium Super blades. SOTD: 1959 Gillette FatBoy loaded with a PolSilver Super Iridium blade (4th use). 1940's Currier and Ives shaving bowl soap (by Williams) lathered with That Darn Rob 26 mm Tuxedo synthetic brush. The soap easily lathered and had the scent of old wood...from the bowl I suppose. Rich, creamy, and good slickness. Traditional 3 pass (settings 4, 4, 3) plus pick-ups shave. Finished with Thayer's AF SF skin toner and 1960 Williams Ice Blue Aqua Velva aftershave. BBS result. The post-shave face feel was/is very pleasing. This time out with the FatBoy was best shave ever from that particular razor. Was it the blade? The settings? The soap? Who knows, but there is no arguing with the results. Your shave went smoothly and is a fine result. I understand you are using the vintage soap sparingly, but don't worry...I have plenty for both of us! When will you use the 1960 Williams Tonsorial puck again? Please stay healthy and safe, both you and Mrs. H. Take care.

Nice shave, Paul. My SOTN: warm shower, WCS 26mm, Stirling Barbershop soap, ‘59 Gillette Red Tip, Thayers Cranberry Orange, Stirling Barbershop A/S, Nivea Cooling Balm. I’m waiting on a NOS 1960’s vintage bottle of Fabergé Brut with plastic case which should arrive by Friday. Also... For anyone wondering, I found the Thayers Cranberry Orange scent at my local grocery store in Texas. It came in a holiday themed gift pack along with the unscented and rose versions. Around $12 US if I remember correctly.

I am going to use one of my "Fancy Words" but I surmise the reason for the "Little Circle" in the head of the razor is: when the image is pressed on the skin the head is automatically positioned correctly. If the image is not on the skin either by stilting too far back or forward the blade would skip and/or feel harsh..I don't know the precise number of Degrees but it is somewhere in the 40 Degree Range (but not 45 Degrees that would be too acute an angle). I came across several GEM sponsored "How to SE Shave" commercials/tutorials years ago. You, Mr.H ,are late .... :P

I was lucky enough to find a few of those pucks of soap at a discount store a few years back. I keep them as collectibles but used one for shaving. After all these years it’s still a fantastic soap.

That's your most beautiful brush IMO. Besides your own PaulHFilms of course :) I love a vintage shave like that, those for me are the most enjoyable ones. The Colgate worked wonderfully! I've taken on "Williams Wednesday" shaves so that was the soap for the SOTD. Merkur Progress set 6 with a Derby Extra blade, Vie Long horse hair brush and Pinaud Clubman after shave to finish things up. 20:11 Alys was almost late to the party this time :) Have a great rest of the week and congratulations to Mrs H for yet another stunning flower arrangement.

This one brought back memories. When I was a teen and just starting shaving. I used a Trac2 razor. But always used mug shaving soap. The only 2 you could get in my area were Williams, and Colgate. Haven't seen it in years. I can smell it while you shaved. Great vid. Thank you

I grate off the amount of soap I want into my shaving bowl then put the puck back into its container. I then add maybe a teaspoon of warm water to the soap shavings in the bowl and let it sit for 5 minutes. Once it’s “bloomed” in the bowl bowl I hit it with the brush. Makes tons of creamy lather, and my soap puck is put away nice and dry. Since I shave almost every day this technique works for me to keep my soap dry.

Paul💈💈nice shave. Yes, don't forget the "Magic Eye" on the top cap, it's supposed to flat on the skin, at least that's what I was told. I have the exact same razor, box and blade holder with blades, never been used, beautiful. The Colgate soap worked good for being vintage software, I used it back in the day. Stunning display of color from Mrs H today, thanks. Great video and chat, thanks. Enjoy!

Hi Paul , I believe the razor you are using is a “ Flying Wing” I do not think it is a Micromatic. Micromatics are Open Comb. Great shave 🪒 Paul!!! 🙃 (VLS) Have a great Thanksgiving & you & family stay well!
@liamo4 Жыл бұрын
No the Micromatic came in open and closed versions, but I think the Bullit tip was only in closed comb. The earlier round tip was available in open comb. My version is the same as Paul's (closed comb) and in the box is a stand up tag reading "GEM Micromatic." These were introduced in 1947 and I think only continued into 1948. They are actually gold plated and cost $1.95 back then, about $27.00 in todays money in theory. I think not really. The "Flying Wing" nickname comes from the shape of the head in profile I have been told., and the "Bullit Tip" from the obvious shape of the handle tip.

Hey Paul (and anyone else who would like to give me a hand!) my brother is currently on tour with the army in Cyprus and for christmas has hinted for his very first-ish safety razor (he had been using my spare Wilkinson Sword DE on and off before he left). Can anyone make any suggestions for which will suit him best? We tend to both have fairly sensitive skin shaving wise and he'll be shaving almost daily. He likes a long handle although I'm sure he'll put up with anything haha. Also I'd like it to be something he can keep for years and years, because I'm sentimental like that. How long does a chrome plated DE last compared to a stainless steel? The price for a stainless steel seem crazy compared to my beloved DE89, but if it'll last a lifetime then I'd say it's worth it. Cheers for any help guys!
