It was such a joy to find this simple and very clearly explained video. I am a first year Gemmology student studying in Spanish so I often need to look for materials in English to help me fully understand the concepts. THANK YOU this is just what I needed!

A brilliant explanation. Ohhh the lines of truth. One of many tests, I find the refractive index is one of the best guides. Daunting at first, but as you say, it takes practice. Thank you for sharing your knowledge.

It's so fascinating on how this machine works🤔😯🔬💡 and to teach us how gemstones💎 have the shadowing effect. Thanks for sharing.🤗💎

Thank you Claire, so nice to have a teacher/lecture give us the run down on the gem equipment. I love how you can also work the birefringence from the RI readings 😁 and yep I still need more practice before my mid year exams🤣

Fair play to you. I've been a crystal fiend for over 20 years and I'm not bad at guessing....but that's all I can do, guess. I've always been daunted by the thought of a refractometer and thought about maybe getting one of those Presidium gem testers and I wonder what someone like yourself thinks about those machines. Cheers 👍

Good coverage but showing a picture using the polarizing filter would have been useful. Also on a safety note avoid getting the fluid on your hands as it is dangerous. A question- once opened how long is the fluid good for and how do you know when it needs to be replaced. Again thanks.

Do the specimens need to have a flat, polished surface? Could a peice of rough material be effectively sampled or would another type of device be better for facet rough material?

Hello, have a good day, is there a table for reading gemstones? For example, when examining any stone on this device and the number 1.55 or 1.6 came out, for example, is there a table that matches the numbers to know the type of stone. Thank

Yes! It sounds like you are looking for a Refractive Index Chart. Many sites have these online. Here is one we found: www.globalgemology.com/gem-refractive-index-chart.html#/

Say all this is done. How can you tell what stone it is for sure, meaning there are a lot of same color stones but not the same stone. Is there a chart to help ID the stone?
@gems3 жыл бұрын
Yes! There are charts that list the refractive indices of many stones. And remember, the refractometer is measuring how a stone slows down the light, so even if, say a Topaz, has a similar color to a Sapphire, they will have different refractive index readings indicative of their identity.
